Wondering what you guys thought of this idea, im going to try and do it myself which means 3 years in ill get bored and move onto another fort.

Basically you embark in an area with an underground river running through it clear the river of critters and dig out around its banks, this includes channeling a couple of z levels higher too. once thats done you build your dwarves their own houses around the river ensuring that all buildings you build only make use of constructed walls and ceilings. you famr by using channeling and pumps to recrate the seasanol floods of old.
