What? Potatoes and mushrooms do not have the same texture. I like them both, but they have different applications.

Also... if people like potatoes on pizza, has anyone had one with mashed potatoes as the sauce? Probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had.

Not the same, but if you're making a fully-veg pizza they both add a bit of chewiness.

Mashed potatoes on pizza sounds amazing and I would love to try it.

Wow, a LOT of crazy pizza styles here, at least compared to what is considered "traditional" here in USA.
In particular I'd never even HEARD of potatoes on a pizza before now. Mashed in particular. Could be good though.

Personally I prefer Hawaiian style pizza, with the ham and pineapple and most importantly, brown sugar! Nums.
BFEL is into the sweetmeats. This is also why I like onion on my pizza. I don't think I've ever had a pizza where the onions didn't carmelize into sweet tasting deliciousness.

After Hawaiian I prefer supremes. With a buttload of onions, olives and peppers, as well as the pepperoni and sausage.

Hmm...would LOVE to try crab on a pizza. Crab is the naturally sweetest meat, therefore it is the best meat.

As for crust style I guess I'm in the weirdo "thinner is better" camp. Not so much because its tastier, but because crust is naturally uninteresting to me so the less of it in relation to the good stuff the better.

I've had sliced potatoes on pizza before. Hashbrowns, too. I've put a pizza in mashed potatoes (and mac & cheese, and rice, and noodles, and a few other types of pasta...), too, but I don't I've done much actual mashed potatoes on a pizza proper. Maybe occasionally layering a bit of some on a slice or two, since I've done that to... basically everything I eat, at least a few times. Pretty alright regardless! Better than pretty alright when it's various sorts of seasoned potatoes.

Also the thin advocation's not really a weirdo camp, though it may be for your particular region. Lot of people are very insistent thin crust is the only proper way. They deny themselves vast reams of doughy goodness, but to each their own, et al. Me, I'll eat both, but I also have an unholy love for bread that's only just shy of carnal so the crust is very interesting to me regardless of the thickness (I've totally just scraped all the toppings and sauce off a pizza and ate the crust by itself before, usually when I wanted to use the rest for cooking something else). Though you can, admittedly, do more with thick crust in regards to filling and whatnot. Make a second pizza and use that as the base. Pizzaception. Still, thin is good, too.

I actually like bread, to the point I'll eat it with nothing on it or done to it and not feel weird about it, but pizza crust just doesn't do it for me.

My mother's home-baked bread (long before "bread-making machines" made it a 'hip' thing to make use of), various batches made of various different flours, were a staple of my growing up.  I still remember that it was at a (9th?) birthday party at another kid's house when I first had white bread (probably shop-bought pre-sliced). Didn't like the taste. Tasted a bit bleachy. Probably for good reason, given that I was used to largely untreated bread-products, pretty much, up until that point.

(Don't hate white bread, these days, but the loaf I bought today is farmhouse grain (wholemeal, with four different grain-types in it, and sprinkled atop) and sliced (because some things save time/awkwardness/mess). Although it's not a patch on me mum's bread.)

I've never actually tried it, but I'm pretty sure that fried chanterelles on a pizza would be absolutely kill.

There's a joint down the way that serves a pizza called the "American"; topped with beef, Bearnaise sauce, onions, jalapeņo slices... And french fries.

It's... Not bad. The fries could do with being a bit crispier, but hey.
