Melting snow for water?

Is this possible?  I use the same interface as melting ice in a waterskin but don't get a "melt" option for the snow.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

Fill your waterskin with snow first.

There's never a "melt" option. There's just a heat option. It works pretty much the same as melting ice in a waterskin, but first you use I to fill a waterskin with snow.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

1) Stand on snowy terrain...

2) Press (I), scroll through until you find a vacant waterskin, and then fill that waterskin with snow...

3) Press (g), make campfire...

4) Press (I), scroll to snow-filled waterskin, heat waterskin using campfire...

...

Your waterskin should now be filled with succulent, flavorful water...

And just in case it's not obvious, you may have to scoll down the options for your waterskin to find 'heat' if you're still standing on snowy terrain as the first several choices may be 'fill with snow in x direction'.

Interesting. I've never had to fill a waterskin with snow, I just pick up snow and heat it into water using a campfire.

You can do it that way...

However using waterskins cuts out a lot of mindless click-y work...

...

For instance, let's assume you wanted three units(?) of water...

Picking up pieces of snow and putting them in your backpack, making a campfire, and then heating the snow requires you to navigate the [ g ] menu three times for picking up the snow, once more to set up the campfire, and then navigate the [ I ] menu three times to melt each individual unit(?) of snow...

That pans out to 7 actions you need to execute in order to get your water, whereas using a waterskin demands only 3 actions for the same result...

Where do you get a water skin from? Can you heat with a bowl or barrel?

You can find waterskins in mead halls and bandit camps.
Note that a flask and vial are the same as a waterskin, but a flask is metal and a vial is glass. (I've yet to see a vial in adventure mode, but i see plenty of flasks).

I have never tried heating a bowl or barrel but I think it should work.

Will try that next time I play an elephant man. I always have them wander around with one or two coffers of water rather puny waterskins.
Unlike waterskins though, chests, backpacks and coffers don't seem to magically eliminate mud from muddy water when you pour it out.
