Rapid decline in kea numbers 'alarming'
« on: September 17, 2016, 08:39:01 pm »

Kea might be the bane of many a fortress in DF. But in New Zealand, the only place where kea live in the real world, conservationists are worried about a rapid decline in population. There are only about 3000 to 4000 kea in the South Island of NZ.

There are some great photos at linked story of the kea's colourful plumage that shows when they are flying.

But no love for Kakapo?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Much friendlier and more endangered bird from New Zealand. Also found in Dwarf Fortress.

I think this thread title could be adapted into dwarf fortress, for maybe humans to be concerned about when the player hunts keas to extinction again?

The Kakapo, such odd creatures they are, burrowing flightless parrot and the largest one too.
Kind of like avian dwarves when you think about it.

Yes. I've actually been trying to catch and tame some Kakapo in my current fort. So far have been unsuccessful...

These horrible creatures do nothing but steal silver hammers and things like that.  Good riddance!

What's more impressive is seeing them tote an anvil when they are flying :)

Kakapo are easy to find and tame, though it will likely involve the bird trying to rape your dwarfs head
