It's been a while since I played this, so I've forgetten the details, but a)there is more than button, and b)they have different functionality depending on the context: your proximity to enemies, other buttons that you press simultaneously, etc. The skill ceiling on the combat is actually quite high.

Here's hoping they teach that to scrubs like me someday lol

I haven't actually tried the combat in this game (Back when I played it it was still primarily a level editor) but assuming it's like Lugaru then yes, holding no buttons while attacking will attack differently than if you hold forwards while attacking. If you jump at a wall then attack then you'll bound off the wall and perform a kick. If you're right next to an enemy you'll do a very quick but weak punch, and if you're further away you'll do a sort of double punch. Again, assuming it's like Lugaru.

counterfest
When I played Lugaru it did seem a bit like a counterfest though. Sometimes it was more detrimental to have a weapon than it was to go without.

I always thought it was neat that taking a weapon into combat also posed a significant risk to you.

Yup, I played it through back when beta 6 came out and the release version isn't significantly different from that. It's a game alright.

But then what will they do? They've been doing alpha xxx/beta xx videos for years now.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Presumably, bugfixes, more additions, and possibly mod showcases. Wouldn't mind more art videos either.

I just killed a wolf in the most badass manner. Threw a knife at it, which landed point-first in its nose. This didn't kill it of course, and it swung at me. I yanked the knife out mid-dodge, killing the thing. I wish I was recording.

Goodness, I haven't checked on this in so long! I remember reading the dev blog for this back in middle school, hard to believe it's actually released now.
