Replace "non hippy" with "edgy" and you've got it mostly right, yeah.

Aren't elves already pretty edgy?  They do make war on almost everyone and eat the flesh of their enemies, you know.

I'm working on something a step further.  Perhaps the ultimate in edgy elves.  But first, I have to learn how to use DF Hack.

Here's a hint

When I think of dark elves, the ones from Amulet spring to mind. Googling hasn't given me a good picture but basically:

They are very pale and grey.
Their eyes are slit like that of a snake
The eyes also emit a blue glow in the dark
Their mouths are lined with numerous sharp pointy teeth
They tend to eat things "raw"
Their hair ranges from white to blond
They are tall, pointy eared, and skinny like more traditional elves
They are decked out in heavy armour and have cool magitech

These are my favorite incarnation of elves period. There probably wasn't much of a point to mentioning this but since this is an article about elves I thought they might be relevant.

You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

Surely Masterwork has them?  or some equivalent.

If you want non-hippy elves in your game, that can be simple.  As easy as copying one of the other civs and replacing their creature type with elves.  Or you could go apeshit and give them all kinds of custom equipment and industries and a reaction that turns them into half-spiders.

I always liked the idea of hippy elves and hipster elves.  The hippy elves are the green haired dark skinned rangers and druids that live in tree houses in harmony with nature, hipster elves are the blue-eyed blond sorcerers and spell-blades that live in high towers or floating cities and study the arcane arts with fervor.  Then you can add to that some kind of dark elf or alien elf that lives underground or in an alternate dimension, twisted by a sunless world and hungry for power.

But making civilizations based on animals was more fun.

I had one on my old computer, they even had reactions to turn wood into metals with their version of the elven tree growth magic. They were very war loving, had their own steel equivalent made from wood, bones, and iron, and even the goblins would usually go to war with them. Problem was, with the: Dwarves, goblins, regular elves, draconians, highmen, and ascended going to war with them, they'd usually die off in world gen, or dominate the entire world.

^Yeah, that's the problem with war-like races in general.  If you want to make a race that you actually interact with, snatchers and thieves work better.

Below is the description for Ferric Elves from the Fortress Defense Mod.

Quote
Ferric Elves are the remnants of elven communities who survived the fiery destruction of their forests. Left with no other choice, they learned to smelt iron and silver with the leftover charcoal and forged themselves into a formidable fighting force. Each member of their desperate race is trained to use a ranged weapon from birth, resulting in innate archery skill. Swift and agile, they are too graceful to be caught by traps. Cut off from their connection to nature they no longer wish to live, and experience no fear charging into battle, hoping only to end their internal pain. Please be so good as to oblige them!

Rhenaya was the first to do so, I think. I don't know if the current Drow in MW are related to hers. A lot of other mods have them, too. My dusk elves have tentacles.
