Haeum Sung

NOTE: for times, please fill out the survey!!

Roughly a hundred years ago, a powerful Evil cleric cast a single spell that wiped out a good part of this world's humanoid population. This cataclysmic event, named rather uncreatively the Calamity, ripped the souls from most of the unfortunate victims' bodies, creating the "soul fog" that even now blankets the world and blots out the sun. The bodies left behind were reanimated into undead, and those who were not caught in the initial casting of the spell were now being hunted by the corpses of those who had. Many flocked to the few fortified cities that were left untouched by the Calamity, including Haeum Sung, forming its incredibly racially diverse population of today: perhaps two million individuals, from elves to goblins to humans to kobolds to orcs. Haeum Sung is a mega-city of tens of levels of streets and buildings built on top of each other. It is kept running by the constant efforts of administrators, wizards, alchemists and oracles who toil to make the city self-sufficient. Protected by its immense runestone walls from the undead of the post-Calamity world, it stands as one of the few bastions of civilization that remain. While most citizens are perfectly fine with living inside the safe walls of Haeum Sung, there are many reasons to go on brief trips outside the wall. You are one member of one of the groups of adventurers that brave the outside world, hired by the government of Haeum Sung. The ruler of Haeum Sung, Tian Ranxi, has summoned your group to the Capstone for a non-urgent mission.

Rules and stuff
- The system is Pathfinder
- Starting level is 7
- As you have been working for Haeum Sung for a while now, you are fairly well-off. Starting gold is 50000 gp, but are forbidden from spending more than 20000gp on one item.
- You are not allowed to be a: wizard, cleric, druid witch, shaman, arcanist.
- If you wish to be a martial with no spellcasting, I highly recommend picking a Path of War class such as Stalker, Warder or Warlord. Maneuvers are really fun!
- The entire outside world is undead, so keep that in mind.
- One minor houserule: intelligent undead are not blanket immune to spells such as Charm or illusions.
- Take maximum HP for all levels.
- No alignment restrictions.
- 25 point buy.

- I hope to have four players... I might have to cancel the game if there isn't enough people.

- Here's a survey to determine ideal game time. I am in the Korea/Chinese timezone, so unfortunately it will be quite difficult for, say, East Coast US people to participate at comfortable times. Sorry :( I aim to start each session at a time between 8pm Korea time, and each session should be 3 hours.
- Games will be played at regular times on Roll20.

Haeum Sung, a brief overview
Haeum Sung is an extremely dense city of two main areas, Haeum Sung East and Haeum Sung West. East and West are separated by the same kind of wall that separates the city from the outside.

Though there are many layers of streets and buildings, they can be roughly divided into three vertical districts.
Haeum Sung East
This is the "downtown" of Haeum Sung. Most important guilds are located here.
Sky District: Features of note are some wealthy residences, the mage school (Jadean Academy), the ruler's home/administrative building (the Capstone), and the Water Feed where all new water is introduced into the vast waterworks of Haeum Sung via repeated castings of Create Water.

People District: Homes and the bards' guild and alchemy guild, the Yeongeum Won.

Earth District: The lowest district. It has many stores and workshops, alchemical factories and a few miracle farms.

Haeum Sung West
Haeum Sung West is mostly homes and miracle farms as well as some orchards. There is also the Six Soldiers Military Academy in the People district.

The gates
There are five gates to Haeum Sung. The first "gate" is the teleport pad in the People District in Haeum Sung East. It also has the north, south and east gates. West has the western gate. Each gate is guarded by Gate Guards, who are well-equipped with full plate armor, masterwork halberds, maces and sometimes crossbows. Visitors must walk through an Anti-Magic Field before being inspected for disease contracted from the outside. The AMF is intended to prevent any intelligent undead from casting a disguise spell on them to sneak into Haeum Sung.

Unlike the Gate Guards, the Internal Guards who keep the peace in the street wear chain mail, leather armor and have spears, sometimes bows.

Soul fog: A worldwide mist of amalgamated souls, the soul fog is perhaps one of the more eerie results of the Calamity. Not only does the soul fog darken the sun during the day to "slightly brighter than during a thunderstorm," it seems to somehow weaken the connection the divine gods have on the world. Post-Calamity, there have been no reports of clerics successfully communing with their gods, nor that of new clerics being found. Strangely, other divine servants such as Paladins, as well as channelers of divine energies such as Oracles remain.
Careful experimentation by alchemists from Haeum Sung's Yeungeum Won has determined that departed souls do not go to the afterlife as usual, but instead are captured by the soul fog. As if this was not incentive enough for most citizens to stay inside Haeum Sung's walls, when the fog descends upon the earth at night people report hearing whispers barely audible, which then disappear when one tries to listen to what they say.

I have now and after converting into GMT, I find that I'm more able to play this than I thought.

Do you have details that you can share about the poltical structure and the types of things adventurers are hired to do outside the walls?

So someone cast a Locate City Bomb/World-Covering Breath Weapon/Min-Maxed 3.5 Epic Spell and the world is trying to recover? Seems like a pretty good setting.

Sadly, if I'm playing with people that I only know on the Internet, I only do PbP, and even then only on forums, so I can't play.

Intriguing. Not sure I like the high starting level, but I'll see if I can't figure something out. Filled out the survey already.

By the way, how are we on gun availability?

It's best described as a rule by law, with a benevolent dictator (Tian Ranxi the elf wizard) having a veto. Also a reasonably large bureaucracy. Some tasks adventurers do is escort supply vans to other settlements, such as Haeum Sung's sister city Ara Sung; acquire specimens for research, send messages when there are no wizards available, and occasionally excavating ruins. Alternatively, you can do stuff inside the city...

So someone cast a Locate City Bomb/World-Covering Breath Weapon/Min-Maxed 3.5 Epic Spell and the world is trying to recover? Seems like a pretty good setting.

Pretty much, yes.

As the the second point: it's going to be entirely by chat, no voice. Is that better or worse?

I was actually quite conflicted about the starting level. I'd be entirely fine with lowering it to 7 or 8, not sure i that'd help :P

For guns: Probably Emerging Guns would be the level. There'd probably be like two gunsmiths in the entire city, and not many people use it, but it's definitely a thing that's happening.

Most definitely interested, although I am not sure I could fit in the time zones. I filled the survey anyway, so lets see.

It seems an interestig setting, it would be nice to explore it.

Hm. I'm not sure what this Race Point business in the OGC is all about. Can I pick a race with 9-11 RPs with impunity, or is there some tradeoff akin to a level adjustment?

It seems that any 9 or 10 RP races are "typical PC races." And since racial points are even less accurate than CR, 11 is probalbly fine too. Which race are you looking at?

Dhampir. Specifically, a Dhampir Sorcerer of the Undead Bloodline for maximum theme value.

PTW even if I have no idea what Pathfinder is. :D Excited to see this.

An offshoot of D&D. It's free on the internet! A bit vast, but the systems are all there, I believe.

EDIT: oof, retroninja'd.

This seems really interesting and I'd like to play, but I know absolutely nothing about pathfinder or D&D, so I don't know if I can.

In any case, PTW, this looks really cool.

I've made a character for pathfinder... once? And then the game never started.
I'mk interested, though I would also say I prefer a lower level than ten.

No idea what I'd make. Probably not a build around intimidation :P
