This would be a great resource for writing stories set in the DF universe. I'm glad you made it!

I am also surprised that no one else has gotten around to it before you, I could have sworn there was a thread a few years ago . . .

In any case, thanks.

The original post has been updated.
Sorry for the necro, but this thread is the second result on Google when searching "Dwarf Fortress Translator"...

I don't suppose you could make this a downloadable program?  Especially if it runs dynamically loaded languages, so it could work with modded language files, (including player-created languages from mods), this would be something I'd really like to see.

It might also be worth getting worked into DF Hack, now that I think about it...

There's not a single result of "mád" on the wiki's language page.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

I'm very curious about what mádkik kębkir kar means.

Mádkik is one of the translator's words made to fill in spots for words that aren't in game. Mádkik, ergo, means many things.

Also, you can't translate Dwarven/Elven/Human/Goblin to English. You can only translate English words into any of the four languages I mentioned.

How does it go about making plausible translated words, as it did with 'mádkik?'

Edit: small suggestion - when displaying that ambigous-term-selector, also display the english form of the word, not only adjective/verb(form)/noun/ect.
I for example am not that familiar with abstract english grammar (like many not-native-english-speakers, i guess), but i can take educated guesses based on words...
basically i should know what i am looking for (given that i know the term to be translated) but i do believe DF-Lingos swallow up some of the finer points of speech (such as the walk/walking/walked thing - do different verb forms even make sense in this?)
The problem is they look the same. For instance, "boring":
atęk (verb present participle, drill) = The dwarf is boring a tunnel.
edod (adjective) = The boring elf.
edod (verb present participle, boredom) = The elf is boring me.

Thankfully, it doesn't really make a difference for most translations. "Jumps" always translates into "mâtzang", regardless of form. You just need to know which words mean something completely different.

That was the problem when I was working on the real-world language pack for DF. Things that are homonyms in English usually share the same token in DF languages even if they're semantically unrelated, and there are no translation hints, which made it difficult to come up with sensible 1:1 translations for most other languages while also conserving meaning.

I actually want to play around with this a bit, but I seem to remember that Toady mentioned that the next release may have some more language changes, so I'm waiting to see if that's the case.

Maybe I'll start updating the real world languages for the next version. I need some modding outlet that's not too involved.

This is - or rather was - really cool. Although it seems to have vanished. Any plans to re-host it?
