- What's with the  8-square black space in first screenshot? Missing downstairs?

-Bees?

-No flowing water & temperate climate?

-Large world? Very active.

-Poultsplosion?

-Layout is very horizontal.

-Wall, even 5z tall wall is relatively quick compared to ceiling's time-consumingness.

-Check if your depot is accessible.

-Magma?

-Why not cheer for elves? They're winning anyway.

-Are you playing on 43.05 or what? 40x1 burrow, nicknames and macros to give labor setup help in vanilla.

-Send a child into caverns.

-Tried farming for thread? Aboveground farming is great for it. Though just ask elves for leather or something...oh wait you killed them.

-If moody dwarf is running out forbid 1 thing to reset timer.

-Secure  caverns? Armor your web collectors?

- Elves can bring you animals.

- Your traps don't defend wagon entrace? I haven't seen that design before though.

-Gather anyway.

- three large staircases? Curious.

- Speaking of last stand, are you at war with anyone?

- "Nice bone stockpile" thought necromancers.

- I think the giant bats outnumber dwarves 10 to 1

- memorialize leatherworker to find out why they died if not in combat reports.

NOW its spring 3 sorry last season was winter 2 sorry for the confusion  :-\.

Lets continue on (if your still there im not sure if anyone still reads this i hope so i assume so as well.)

Time to make more bedrooms and wait for the pit to finish (ik a little boring for you so sorry.)

I got a foreign guy and as soon as I get another melee dwarf he will be in the new squad the Foreign Hammers.

while they are hauling, i have caught a helmet snake, a giant olm, and a giant tode (time to tame and put em in the battle cage.)
the merchants had a giant cougar, a giant recluse spider, so i put them in the battle cage.
The spikes are done and I have just built the pit.
Before I could test it, migrants arrived.

Im now at 97 dwarves wow thats alot.
The human bard attacked someone!

but i sent the military.  The regular bartenders just crowded the bard and everyone was punching him.  Head ,chest, arms, legs, everwhere.  Then my speardwarf SHOVED the spear through his brain and his head collapsed.
I am now shoving more random animals into my battle cage.  Pythons, enchidnas, you name it, it goes there.
Time to test my pit tho.  I will use a giant toad.

My transcript of the fight:
Axey did good until he died like achilles, his foot got em.
Then the military commander got there and it was a deadlock both dodged and blocked shots.
that is until the other guys came.
The speardwarf stabs through his spine nervous tissue which instantly causes him to fall over.
The dwarves bend over and prepare to give em hell.
Axes, spears, and hammers rain down on him as they beat the werelizard to death.
Aliens killed: 1
Alien corpses recovered: 1
Alien artefacts discovered : 0
Civilians killed by aliens: 3
civilians saved : 94
XCOM operatives killed : 1
Rating: good!

ok now i was think back to the necromancers so i think ima build atom smasher to dispose of corpses. 

Now im gonna build more bedrooms as well.

man I put hatches over my downstairs they are just very black in my tileset

You LOOVE elves for some reason mate.  I guess they are good trade partners but their ETHICS KILL ME.
Speaking of last stand, are you at war with anyone?
The other dwarf civs i think are but i cant say with certainty.  My civ is not at war (sadly), but i hope to start one.

sadly they dont what im think bout doin is (just an idea idea) building a bridge that covers the depot in event of an attack.
Cuz the depot is seperate from the fort but still in the same walls.

thanks.  My idea was that the other staircases branch off the fort itself and are not their own individual staircases.  The staircases are very limited and only take you to several areas.  For example, a housing complex is on a staircase that brances off the fort.  They have to go thru the main floor (full of traps) to get to housing. So in my mind it was easier to defend that way.

- Yes I do like elves. Awesome, interesting animals, relatively easily to constrain, immortal, no booze dependency, no cave adaption problems, overall better spread of attributes, only ones with legendary scholar skills....Goblins work better in some roles like mining, and they don't have [TRANCES] or [STRANGE_MOODS], but they're quite potent.

- Horizontal is easier to look at(especially without twbt or visualizers, I should do entirely horizontal fortress sometime to better understand dwarves and how they take jobs, how to notice idlers, etc.), but it takes lot more walking time. 10z of stairs/ramps × 10x × 10y piles/workrooms/sleep areas hold more than 1 max size pasture, yet the average travel distance from center is only about ~40% and worst case is only ~39%. Lot of time, dwarves spend walking - especially if moving something heavy like furniture or rocks.

Close to most efficient layout is somewhat complicated thing depending on local advantages, but mathing it out I can't help but conclude that majority of short walking distance layouts have stairs/ramps and raw materials both pressed against the workshops.

- Yeah humans often hate killing people and eating them. They're only good trade partners till you've gotten what animals and instruments want from them though, mostly.

- Maybe give each staircase their own hatches?

Yeah I assumed that.  Some Kisat Dur made me think bout that.

What I heard on the wiki, recluse spiders only live for 1-2 years and they barely make webs so yeah. No webs there.
I could leave a corpse to lure them, yeah guud idea.

Hahah i lost a small fort (15 people) to a weregoat apocalypse.  1 guy got bit, then he spread it to all the people in hospital (many were injured).  All the bedridden patients rose out of their beds to ambush the doctor and he got buttsecksed.

inter species relationships are just like long term ones. You just gotta make the 'pieces' fit. uhauhahahahahahah best joke 2016 that joke was soo good, it should become some1s thing that they leave at the bottom of every post they make.

Of course horizontil is better, but i got best of both cuz of my stairs.

and hewmans are good traders.

I was thinking of using the corpse to make spider spray webs.

Don't think different giant spiders sling different amount of webs.

Old age is chance by spring, so you should be able to get perhaps thousands of webs when it sprays them every step (just make sure to fall-stack the webs or you'll just get like 15).

With raising bridges, yeah.

Below ground can also build walls right up to map edge, so it's easier in the caverns.

I'm not sure why anyone would be ashamed of that, but that's not possible. Dwarf Fortress is massively more stricter about marriage than even the pope.

As i started I got this message:

Im gonna close the bridge and not engage.

I couldnt dispose of my corpses and stuff so i guess i got extra enemies.  This is goin to hell...

ok a warror and a lady consort came. Time to see them fight one of my killed giant cave toads.
it died.  So they have to fight this.

They are starting to lose against a zombie cavy boar.
Now im gettin some archer towers up and Sodel, a hunter, is gonna be the leader of the archers.
I will make the archers target the necromancers first.
I am making silver bolts (i dont have any other metals).\

Im surrounded.  Im tryin to get everyone equipment right now for the inevitable battle.

they climbed! a few guys died, and only soldiers are now on the surface.

The necromancers are dead. thats good.
My regular infantry is doin good, but my foreign guys are takin some blows.
Only my foreign commanders still goin and i lost some civilians.

My militia commander is taking damage to the arm.  A zombie crossbowman is just sniping guys in my main fort.  This is not going too well.  I made the mistake of not goin with lazy newb pack, and i am ok if this fort dies.  It wont tho.

Necros sure can come early. They look weird with that tileset. So large skulls!

Nice hell you have there.

Cage traps should capture them, and bridges can  crush them, but...do you have enough cages, overseer of dikepast?

I wonder if your archers will jump down the toward and hit the necros with their crossbows?

Warned you about the roof bro.

Battle cage will be hilarious, but unarmed civs can also add to their numers.

Ok the deed has been done.  Women, children, the Rebel Yells are lcoked on the surface, going to die on the surface.

I am sorry.  He was the kid that made the ring.
Only one soldier is left, the leader of the Foreign hammers.  he is in the hospital with grave wounds on his arms and legs.
I am sending sending some helldivers to go to the surface, get the child, and get some undeadite weapons.

Some guys are trapped on the outside , running until their very deaths.

My new fort. 28 guys. What Fun!!!
Gwolfski is now my lone soldier, known as a Last Stander.
I am equipping him now.
Hes a skilled Axedwarf.
I am going to make a stone statue to commemerate what happened.
Gwolfski died.
He was beat by a Yak skeleton, he jumped the wall.

This is how Dikepast dies.

I want to see what is on the statue though.
Fikod, the mechanic etches a very quick memorial out of stone.
It is a picture of two dwarves.

If anyone wants to try and save it, give it a go.

Im tryin to link to lever but it wont work (beefore battle i destroyed pressure plate).
Fleeting Frames hears the crys of pain and takes up armor.
With everyone else in the hospital, Fleeting frames, with his Silver hammer and  Hazel shield, is ready to make THE LAST STAND.
A goblin axe corpse ambushes fleeting frames from behind.  He swings his shield, deflecting the axe and bashing the corpse in the corpse's armored head.
Frames swiftly dodges each shot with ease.
Several more corpses join the battle.
Fleeting Frames enters a martial trance!
He pushes the other two into a wall and decides to attack a marksdwarf.
Fleeting Frames Grabs the marksdwarf's arm and starts bashing his upper body in.
Swing after Swing after swing,.
A lasher comes up around him and whips him in his left lower arm.
Frames screams in pain and agony.
A pikeman bites the wound and shakes it around.  Fleeting frames is brought to his knees, his helmet gets removed, and the trio of zombies start start punching, kciking , and stabbing him in a big circle.
Even the bravest of warriors get knocked down.
Even the strongest of people die.
Even the hardiest get weathered.
Even the most determined fail.





That is the story of dikepast.


A pikeman and a marksdwarf are on top stabbing the last child into submission.
With a roar, fleeting frames charges into battle, hammer in hand ready to bash some skulls.

i plan to do another fort.  This was a great first fort.  I love this game. I want to show you pictures of what has become.


Ground level.



Farming and defense.


housing and bolts.


Main fort.


Storage.
Thats most of it, the rest are rooms for the mayor and unimportant stuff.

I have had a great time on this adventure with a wonderful community, im glad someone noticed and im glad someone cared.

I have had one of the best times of my life.
Thank you.

Shame about sacrifices. You will get migrants, but...Will the undead stick around and kill those too?

*chuckle* @ the wall jump into undead beast ten times gwolfski's size.

A third...Fourth last stand? This will go terribly! :P

Martial trances are the main reason I consider dwarves best fighting race, provided one avoids cave adaption penalty.

...Huh. Toady did say that only intelligent beings should remove helmets, but that non-intelligents beings are doing things they shouldn't.

You know, I'd probably have camped it out and built a trap to catch the undead with puppy bait :v Less glorious, but ahtacched to life.
