I think making the face wider worked.  I added more dwarfs, too.  It took some googling in order for me to get a sense of what their clothes and tools should look like.  It's been a pretty fruitful exercise, so far.  There are some human figures and a goblin,(drawn at more than triple the resolution of this image) in there for size reference, as well as a head height chart. 

Before I add highlights and shadows, I want to decide on a background.  Even if I don't add it to the picture, it will give me a sense of where the light sources are, and the light color and intensity.  I do sort of wonder what kind of lighting is appropriate for dwarf fortresses, though.  Do they even need light?  If not, I might use "fake" ambient light, but it would likely make everything too blue looking.  Fire, on the other hand, would be too orange.  If they use lamps or lanterns, it creates a good opportunity for some interesting mood lighting.  It might add depth to their technology and culture as well, because they would likely use either stained glass, lamp shades, or special fuels that burn in various colors.

The posture of the one on the left seems a little off to me. When I blocked out the figure, the pose looked fine, but after adding the skirt, she looks kind of off balance, or something.  It could be that I draped the skirt incorrectly.  I might need to look up a pose, for reference.

Good looking dwarves, the males are spot on I think, the females though - maybe a little squareness to the face, a bit more shoulder width, and thicker necks all around where visible?  A female Dwarf in good shape with big bazoombas should have one serious hourglass shape 

Took me a minute to decide what looks wrong about yellow-dress with her posture.  It seems to me to be either the hip swivel and foot position not matching, or the knee bend compared to back straightness.  Maybe some combination of both.  There's nothing really wrong, but it looks like it's a really uncomfortable stance.  The zombie dwarf on the right has the same problem, but it doesn't look wrong because the positioning of the hands and facial expression just scream "living dead" or "vegetable"

i always pictured the dwarves as really fidgety, mysterious creatures with faces shrouded in darkness, and massive, sweeping beards that cover most of their body.

and I like the idea of elves being completely fucking nuts after being alive so long. they just sort of lose it eventually, or never have it to begin with, and consider themselves the self appointed defenders of the earth, and would rather see the earth prosper than be doomed to live to see the less long lived races make it barren.
and then, goblins. i think of goblins as elves that made deals with demons, or became twisted inside by something, and set out to do the opposite of the elves, and that is to destroy all kinds of shit.
also i'm aware that the ears are currently coming out of the backs of their necks, rather than a sensible location. I DONT KNOW, MAYBE THATS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE
