what about artemis fowl dwarves?

sure, they dig.. but they do it by unhinging their jaws and chewing through the soil. Which they then eject from their rears as compressed stone. also, they have prehensile beards and glowing saliva.
Yeah, we'll just leave that in the dark where it should stay.
And they never have any female dwarves, so no real way to compare.
And these are alright dwarves. Then again, there is only one example as far as I remember.

I'd say they're really only named dwarves- but they're closer to an existing cliche of mole people. Illusion of creativity. Not that they weren't creative, but they're also not as far from established concepts as the 'misnomer' would lead you to think.

If by 'established concepts' you mean 'Tolkien' then yes.

Does Tolkien ever mention female dwarves?

Apparently they're naturally outnumbered by like 20 to 1, so dwarven females are prized possesions of warlords and nobility.
And they don't have beards.

I got the books minus the SIlmarillion, although I've read half of it.
Now you mention it, it doesn't state in the books that dwarf females don't have beards, and Return of the Kings appendixes got al kinds of crazy stuff like the family tree of Gimli and the different calendars, but nothing on the races themselves...

I read about the rarity of dwarf females in the Silmarillion, but I don't know about the beards...
I'll check around the webs :p

EDIT:
According to http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Dwarves females aren't mentioned much, but I really do remember reading about the rarity of females in the Silmarillion... Might've been my imagination...

Females of any species are barely mentioned in Tolkien's books.  I do recall it being stated that it is difficult for non-dwarves to tell male and female dwarves apart, which would imply that they have beards, but I don't know where if anywhere in the books that is.

Well, I remember reading a fantasty book which did have some female dwarves, and even a female warrior dwarf. I don't remember what book it was, Eragon maybe?

Anyways, yea, female dwarves are barely represented in fantasty. How about the movie Willow? Although they may have been closer to Hobbits than Dwarves (same stature, but they live in a forest (Not ewoks, believe me, lol), not all of them had beards and I have no idea about liquor).

They could pass for Dwarrow or something though.

EDIT: Just wikied it and it was made by George Lucas himself. No wonder they seem alot like Ewoks.

Edit: At first it says that they were a half-ling like race while later in the credits it says that the main character was a dwarf (likely a young one whose beard hadn't started to really grow yet). So.....

Edit: Looking further at wiki, it looks like they would be pretty dwarven, even if they are a rural (dwarrow) community and the fact that they use magic.

Anyways, yea, female dwarves are barely represented in fantasty.

As mentioned already, female dwarfs are definitely represented in the Discworld novels. One of the books makes the politics of Dwarfish gender identity a major issue.

I was referring to fantasty as a whole.

If you refer to fantasy as a whole, then dwarves are barely represented at all, as the amount of 'science fantasy' far outweighs the amount of 'medieval fantasy'. If you include old ledgends and myths as well as current media then dwarves are represented even less.
