Any mods that come with graphics other than ASCII?
« on: September 19, 2016, 03:20:43 pm »

I like mods but I can't play DF with ASCII, or else I'll get cancer(specifically eye cancer).

Is there a way to change it on your own, or is it just stuck like this?

These mods both included their own graphics:

Also, Rise of the Mushroom has a graphics pack made just for it.

Masterwork DF has a selection of graphics.

The major reason that I am not playing vanilla is that I grow too tired of ASCII - now it is only Masterwork DF for me.

In addition to the above, mods that only add files to the raws folder instead of replacing files can partially work with existing graphics set.
Everything that was in vanilla will show graphics.
New terrain and building will be build using those graphics, which usually works fine, but once in a blue moon will turn out ugly.
New creatures will use ASCII letters instead of having their own graphics.  This will still be from the font designed for the graphics you chose, so it won't look completely terrible.

Also, some graphics sets don't use modified raws.  Those can be used with any mod, even ones that edit existing raw files, and get the results listed above.

Once you have the graphics set up the way you want them, be sure to keep a copy of that raw folder someplace safe.  Doing it once is an interesting learning opportunity.  Re-doing it after an errant Starter Pack click gets old fast.

And I apologize for any retina damage you may suffer due to looking at The Earth Strikes Back!'s graphics :) Coders shouldn't be allowed to download GIMP...

Also, default ASCII is rough to look at, but a tileset can make things a lot better while being *considerably* easier to configure for a newbie than a graphics set.

Personally I'm fond of both Wanderlust and FnordSet for basic ASCII tilesets.
