I don't recommend manually installing graphics. It's kind of a pain, and if you install a graphics pack that's made for an older or newer version of Dwarf Fortress than you are using, you could end up with a corrupt game and corrupt save files. With Lazy Newb Packs you are getting a bunch of graphics packs that should be compatible with the included version of Dwarf Fortress. And it makes the installation and switching of graphics packs super easy.

If you need Dwarf Therapist and DFHack, you will want a pack for v0.43.03. If you don't need those utilities and want the latest version of Dwarf Fortress, then you want a pack for v0.43.05.

|Linux|Enay's Linux Lazy Newb Pack|

|Mac|DFHack Lazy Mac Pack|Bare Bones Lazy Mac Pack|
|----------|---------------------------------|---------------------------------|

If you really want to install your own graphics, you basically just copy the files from the graphics pack into the corresponding locations of the Dwarf Fortress folder.
  • Delete your /Dwarf Fortress/raw/graphics folder
  • Drag the /raw/graphics/ folder from the graphics pack into your /Dwarf Fortress/raw/ folder
  • Drag the files from the graphics pack's /raw/objects/ folder into your /Dwarf Fortress/raw/ folder
  • Drag the files from your graphics pack's /data/art/ folder into your /Dwarf Fortress/data/art/ folder
  • Drag the files from your graphics pack's /data/init/ folder into your /Dwarf Fortress/data/init/ folder

That should be everything you need to install. There may be some other files, but they are optional. Most notably, there may be some kind of dfhack.init or onload.init type of file in the /raw/ folder of your graphics pack. This probably contains some custom config settings for Text Will Be Text. If you want this copy it into your /Dwarf Fortress/raw/ folder.

Make sure the graphics pack you are installing is compatible with the specific version of Dwarf Fortress that you are using. A graphics pack that says it's for DF v0.43.05 should not be used with DF v0.43.03 unless the graphics pack author says it's safe to do so. If you really want to install a graphics pack that is not compatible, then copy over everything except for the /raw/objects/ files. The /raw/objects/ files are the ones that cause problems if they are not for the same version of Dwarf Fortress that you are using.

What about mods?

Mods are more tricky. You will probably want to install your graphics pack first before installing any mods.

Installing a mod consist mostly of dragging the text files from the mod into your /Dwarf Fortress/raw/objects/ folder. But there may be some other files that need to be moved around. Sometimes you may have to drag some text files out of one of the mods sub folders, but sometimes the text files need to stay in those folders. It varies from mod to mod.

If you are planning on using a Lazy Newb Pack. You might try out this mod pack designed for use with Lazy Newb Packs. Mod Pack for Lazy Newb Packs

Also, have you heard of Masterwork? If you are using Microsoft Windows, there's a mod pack that should work for you that includes graphics packs that is probably pretty easy to use. Masterwork Mod Pack

Use masterwork dwarf fortress.

I think it is the only serious alternative to vanilla since legendary 0.34 version.

You can turn off absolutely everything you don't like from Masterwork Launcher, I usually turn off most invaders(don't want to clean up the mess of beak wolves corpses), extra critters, vermin etc.

Masterwork by default has graphics enabled, you can switch between available tilesets with phoebius and ironhand possibly the most complete.

MDF also has build-in DFHack, multiple other mods are a part of it (elder gods cults for example) and it has build in interface hacks to make navigating DF easier.
For example stockpile setting - select a stockpile, select goods, export setting, use it in every consecutive game/fort you play.
There is Manipulator available from 'U'nit list, which shows you current skills of your dwarfs and lets you enable/disable jobs from a single nice screen instead of having to navigate between each and every citizen.

The list goes on and on, but IMO Masterwork Dwarf Fortress is the best way to play DF (better than vanilla by far).
Worlds created are full of things going on, extra civs like succubi and pandashi are really well defined and make a difference.

It is available for Windows only. Every option is clickable from interface and requires absolutely no knowledge of scripting. Version 1.13 is most stable but 1.14 has some improvements (like changes to meadow grass to let it grow in all biomes) and the 1.15 has signs.
This friday we should get new version, hopefully Meph will not introduce major bugs like with sand or broken tilesets.
If you wish, I can show you how to fix meadow grass in 1.13 before you generate your first world.

It looks something like this:

what tileset are you using in this picture? for some reason, the spacefox included in masterwork looks really really different from the spacefox in LNP(that i am used to)

Default MDF phoebius.
Although I think about switching to ironhand or mixing both myself.

Actually I messed with them some time ago, so what I see now might be a bit different?

Wow, what a necro. :D

You can't. But the mod includes it's own, larger LNP. No need to have both.

There is also this for vanilla DF: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=161047.0 if you don't want the big mod, but still like 32x32 sprites.
