Swarmed by pets

My cats and dogs are breeding too fast and they are now hampering the working efficiency of my dwarves. What would be the best solution? Kill them, leash them, kill half and train rest or train and let roam free? And what about cats?Thanks.

You can cage them, butcher them, or just mark as non-pet passable all the doors in some parts of the main corridor (but keeping another way to reach other zones by them...

It always seems even asking for many of my pets to be butchered doesn't have much effect. I designate maybe 10 of them to be butchered, but  it would take a very long time for all of them to get killed - with 2 butcheries and several dwarves with the job option.
