I have noticed in adventure mode that telling stories does not advance my social skills very much -- virtually not at all in fact.  I think they may not be working properly.  IIRC, it seems like you would have to tell hundreds of stories just to go up one level.  Music, on the other hand, seemed to improve at a reasonable pace.  I haven't tried poetry yet.

I was under the impression that story-telling mostly increased wordsmithing , not "social" skills like conversation.

@Libash_Thunderhead: I may have misunderstood you, as I thought you meant a tavern zone rather than a burrow. Anyway, "war" animals have been reported to respond to civilian alerts in the past, so that's likely still the case. Thus, "war" animals aren't terribly useful for war, but have been reported to be useful as body guards for dorfs venturing out into somewhat dangerous places as sacrificial meat shields (as long as the dorf doesn't join the fight).
