Would you say MWDF is suitable for new DF players?

Would you say that Masterworks (Fortress Mode) is suitable for players who are new to Dwarf Fortress or would you suggest a certain degree of experience with the regular game (say LNP) is advisable first?

It really depends. There is a lot less documentation for MW, so players might encounter stuff that they can't just look up on the wiki, but the launcher GUI is fairly intuitive, and it's possible to set MW up to be the base game with just a few tweaks to make it more interesting. Encountering a much more diverse array of creatures and so on isn't going to fundamentally change how you play the game, and you can just ignore the MW workshops unless you feel like playing around with them as well.

I started out with MWDF and the LNP. They both made it easier to get into DF with the graphical options and U.I.

Some parts may be a bit more complex than the base game with MWDF but you also get a lot of cool features.
