In that context, it is the Divine Example which shone. Shone is used in this case because the verb needs no object and divine example is the subject. Charlie shined his apple - in this case, an object (apple) is required.

There. EXAMPLES GALORE!

Is your bread god gluten-free tolerant?

I shall lay me down overnight, and cover myself with a loose cloth to prove my faith in bread, thenceforth to rise.

To join thy cult, thou shalt eat one loaf of bread with no topping. Then thou shalt recite the following:

Bread god lead me from darkness,
Towards the light,
Water in the chalice,
Fire in the oven,
Bread of the bread god.

One day before the beaten path I walked
A field I saw all wreathed in gold;
Here grew the barley and the maize
In patches glory-filled and old.

Then of a sudden quick beheld
A sight I never thought to see;
Three youths walked in that field
To trample all within that sea.

Oh loathsome youth today!
They worship not the olden way.
The bread will rise, the crop rejoice;
All earth will strive to strike those boys.

But I, of age and wisdom great,
Restrained myself and walked my way;
I know the bread god all will sate
Yet they who trespass, will betray.

Thank you so, so much. This is amazing poetry. Thank you.

Is there salvation for those who trusted evidence over faith?

Those of us who failed to find the truth, despite trying?

Because, personally...  I have FAR more personal evidence for will'o'wisps and other "backward" ideas of *other*.

Do you have anything whatsoever to support Jehova?  From my perspective?

And if you're right - why do I deserve punishment?

IF Satan has mislead me... why is that my fault, and why would the master of all things make me suffer for it?

If you suggest a purgatory, don't even bother.  That is completely logical.
An eternal hell demands an answer.  A justification.

From my purely atheistic interpretation, and as such not a direct answer to your question: An eternal punishment is a good incentive for blind faith, encouraging the Christian meme to remain where it has spread, rather than being given up. "Huh... those Pagans over there have some interesting theories..... but if this Christian stuff is right, then I will be punished for entertaining the notion."

So that trailed off into skepticism pretty quick, but the context was that I was scared and hoping that, you know, I *won't* be damned if I'm wrong.  I've spent more time trying to learn about religion than most people, and I try to keep an open mind about it.  If I'm wrong, am I going to burn despite all that effort?

Everyone will be wrong, I'm sure. Wrong about what is the bit I wouldn't commit myself to.
