So there were definitely some mistakes made when writing the research questions and answers. This is my first time writing a survey and it's instilled in me the importance of carefully engineering the questions. There weren't too many answers and no write-ins whatsoever because I wanted to make it easy for me to categorize the survey takers and create an output that was easily digestible. Unfortunately this comes at a cost, i.e. the survey takers can't really get across their complete opinion.

But the cool thing is that this is a discussion board, so you guys can still comment and discuss, it just won't show up on the pie chart. The thread will be cited in my report so I may quote people on a permission basis (I'll ask you before quoting you directly).

Thanks for everyone who participated. You've been a big help.

Oh boy, it's time for the thread to devolve into shouting about THE ABSOLUTELY REAL HUMAN-CAUSED IMMANENT GLOBAL THREAT of climate change!

On second thought, I think I'll lock this topic until my report is over with.

Edit:

The moment things get anywhere near flaming I'm locking this. Please remain civil for my sake.

I'd be silly to bite onto how you asked questions but without context of your subject and purpose, I'll bite onto the rest instead. :P
That said, sure--you can quote me. Just use my real name since you know it instead. :P

Though first question--is the goal regarding the presence and current affects/general influences of GLobal warming, or is it 'what it implies'? Because this does come off as a Natural Sciences subject question for those early in university and given that we aren't fully aware of the context, it's also more my curiosity.

So I have to ask, why Bay12?

It might be a single or double-blind psychological study disguised as a survey.

My goal with the paper is to answer: "What needs to be done to combat climate change?" It's a position paper so my thesis is meant to have a built in statement of my position. The purpose of the survey is to collect primary research on people's opinions in this area. Like I said to Max, this isn't useful evidence to back up a claim, it's just there to show how people feel, and I can use this data to spring off of in the intro into a discussion, or back myself up by showing that x% of people I polled agree/disagree with the issue.

So I have to ask, why Bay12?
It's the place where I'm most established and comfortable on the internet. It's also a lot easier than polling people on the street, and I thought the discussion would be interesting and productive.

I do lack time but this is more to the orange word ._. (which is partly why I asked about question-review); if it's a thesis, did you conduct your questions with feedback from your adviser and the like? It could be useful to see how people do feel about it but there are some ways of reasoning that may escape how the question is phrased. Since this is an international community (and may also cover how language is used).

That said, the question about facing Global warming (#5) generally begins with what we can control--emission reduction over finding new ways, because with the question and choices give, the former may already partly lead onto the latter, and given that the former is happening in the present moreso than (the focus on) the latter, it's something to address firsthand. There's also the note that given this international community, there's a varying perception of the matter, because in areas around the world emissions and the like aren't that pronounced in the locality, hence "B" would be a better alternative. And much much more :3

Wishing you well with that report making though! It's usually the most...!FUN! part of research.

It might be a single or double-blind psychological study disguised as a survey.
Doubtful :P These are things I study and it doesn't appear to be one as such--although it is also possible, there's the impression that the variables needed for this is lacking in the OP presentation.

Thanks for getting permission, Tiruin. Here's some commentary/nitpicking, then:

#3 I actually didn't have any problems with - the word primary works in this case, as there are indeed other factors that change the climate (both in the 'warming' and 'cooling' directions) but over the time period of the phenomenon it's majority - or primarily - anthropogenic.

Same with #2 - the '98% of scientists' figure is actually kind of bogus (that particular study was only a limited cross-section of the profession), but the vast majority of scientists still do agree. There are some scientific fields with higher rates of dissent, but if I recall correctly the majority even in those fields believe the evidence supports the theory of climate change / global warming.

The use of the word 'global warming', while it polls better to the public, is less accurate than 'climate change'. Due to the various ways that climate change affects the existing order, increased GHGs can actually lead to colder, more intense winters for certain parts of the world (in certain periods of time). Other changes, such as more intense rains, aren't really 'warming' or 'cooling' but changes in other variables of the climate as the levels of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases increase. And then there's ocean acidification, which is kind of a parallel event but I'd argue can be considered part of climate change.

For #5, answer B strikes me as at least partially a subset of A. Got a bit to say on this question generally, but I'll say at the outset that I'm assuming "sources of energy" is referring to the power sector. If not, the below still applies but not quite as strongly. I'll spoiler the further discussion to spare folks' eyes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bottom line, from the research and modeling that I've seen there is no single silver bullet for reducing the effects of climate change. Suddenly having cheap fusion power tomorrow morning that could be easily integrated into the existing power grid (and have sufficiently low safety risks to reduce NIMBYism and difficulties in deploying in countries with civil societies able to resist such things whether rightly or wrongly) would be a pretty darn big deal, but not even get rid of the majority of U.S. emissions - in a scenario where, to get at something like 1.5 C, the world needs to have negative emissions in the last few decades of this century.

Edit, in spoiler, in regards/response to Max™'s comments:

During my tenure at a university research institute (doing economic research), we mostly collected data via personal interviews with open questions. Interviewers had restricted word choices and ways to ask the questions or probe for information to avoid influencing the subjects, and the resulting interviews were parsed and coded by specialists into classifications of responses. It worked pretty well, and was used to create a well known index complete with citations for specific cases. P.S. Sorry for being vague about process and stuff, if specifics would help, but I'm still under Non-Disclosure Agreements, etc.

Godsdammit MSH, you've done this before! "Immanent" and "imminent" are two entirely separate words; you are literally worse than Hitler.

I can't help it, autocorrect thirsts for immanent. Be glad you haven't borne witness to some of my meatspace verbal idiosyncrasies. Though I would describe climate change as also being an inherent global threat, so...
