Mussel men
« on: December 30, 2016, 12:18:41 am »

Toady, Buddy. We're missing a pretty important animal man species.

Mussel men.

Man-sized mussel shell containing the body of a... mussel man. With legs sticking out of the bottom of its shell.

When you're drowning in donations from finally implementing this overlooked creature feature, I won't need any recognition. Making the game the best it possibly can be is enough for me.

I hadn't even realized that this was what I'd missing in DF. Thank you.

First off, that's one beautiful mussel man.

Second off, I tried to mod this into the game, but to make this possible you have to redefine the animal man creature template. Which of course is possible, and it would accomodate for even more animal men being created, but it still is a bit more complicated than simply adding most other animal men.

Amazing. I was thinking more that the entirety of the "body" including the arms was in the shell and big muscular legs stuck out of the bottom, but this is a great rendition.

And they could perhaps have beards or hair made out of byssus, which I mentioned in this thread (that as of yet has no replies  :'()

Quote from: Wikipedia
Byssus filaments are created by certain kinds of marine and freshwater bivalve molluscs, which use the byssus to attach themselves to rocks, substrates, or seabeds. In edible mussels, the inedible byssus is commonly known as the "beard", and is removed before cooking.

Oyster men, scallop men, and clam men would be cool as well (although clams and scallops should probably be added as well).
Oyster men could produce pearls.
Scallop men could swim up through the water (I suppose all motile [so as to exclude sponges] aquatic creatures—inaccurately including mussels and oysters in this category—can do this now though. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about the ability of oysters and mussels to swim in-game.)
And clam men could squirt water out through their proboscises.

Dang it, now you have me wanting to mod in Pillar Men... I mean, it should be easy but still!

Also, on topic, I do think mussel men are a much-needed new creature. alongside that, pearls could finally return!

Pearls exist in oysters, mussels are orange and fleshy on the inside only, Oyster-men for consistency would also be nice.
