Merrick responds, "I've already made quite a name for myself among the criminals...as well as among the paladins and the common folk. As such, I'll avoid making contact with either of the latter two. Whoever DOES deal with the paladins should beware - during my encounter with one of their members, it turned out they could block magic. Quite troublesome. In any case, due to my earlier interactions I would prefer to deal with the criminals. Anything specific you want me to deal with when it comes to them?"

Merrick looks a bit abashed, "Hey, how was I to know they'd make such a fuss over a few dead scumbags? But yeah, wasn't exactly my goal. On the bright side, I might be able to get the reputation to work out in my favor. We'll have to play a bit of damage control with the paladins before I try anything major, so I'll be sure to avoid anything...public."

"Hmm. Perhaps you could find some of the more hated criminals and... arrest them, then turn them over to our agents. Then hold an extremely public trial, so that all may know that we are upholding law and order in the realm.
I shall amend my list to show that Bryn Merrick has volunteered to deal with the criminal element."

"Building strength for the future, either magical or financial," Karl glaces at Jean Merragius "isn't a bad idea, but please speak up so those of us focusing on the current crisis can better plan this out."

"Bah humbug. I will make contacts with the clergy and dig up information on these paladins, and attempt to puzzle out their motivations. Any objections?"

In the midst of the slightly chaotic and seemingly unproductive discussion, a servant escorted a man into your meeting room. The man was of slightly above average height, grey brown short-kept hair and beard, and eyes that could pierce through you at 1000 paces. It was secretary Yuers, once known as Admiral Major Yuers in his golden years. He is a member of the royal cabinet, which was assumed to be destroyed during the smiting.

The nervous servant, who seems to have attempted to stop the elderly man, but failed, introduces him, courtesies, and leaves.

As respectful (or alarmed) members of the group rose, the man raised his hand and waved you off. Let us skip the formalities. I have come here to pledge my support to the most reasonable group vying for control of this country. He shakily gestures to the eight of you. He age is apparent in his body, but his mind is as sharp as a spear. I come with the full support of the army, and the remains of the government. We stand behind you.

Now this may come as a surprise to some of you, but really it should not. Have you noticed the paladins? They have not come here because of the smiting of the king. They have come because of what has been released. An evil has befallen this city, and it can no longer afford to quarrel over the spoils of the king's death. As such, I have come to tip the scales and return order to the bickering of nobles. The army, the city, and the bureaucracy are at your command.

That is, if you can agree to my demands.
The shrewd old man smiles a smile that makes you wish you had known him thirty years ago. We demand but three things. First, a constitution. A written document outlining the powers of the oligarchy. Second, a set of parliamentary procedures that will explain to all how you reach decisions, and all that nonsense. And finally, that you take active steps in removing the evil that has been released.

It seems men are not the only beings with intervening angels. A monstrosity of unknown origin has crept into the sewers of this city. Already half the army has been defeated and we've learned nothing about it. It would seem that we can no longer afford to the aimlessness of these last two weeks. Do you accept my demands, mages of aerowell?

"May we see this constitution, or has it not been created yet?"

OOC: I suggest that we should all attempt to see if Sage and Cedar resonate with our affinities.

It has not been created, it is to be created by you. Or at least an outline of it.

Hera looks annoyed that some old man is capable of just waltzing into her fortified home, though her expression softens into one of glee as Yuers talks.

"The Angel surely acts through you, Admiral. I believe we can all consent to the creation of a constitution, and an official parliament. We should however focus first on the third issue, as it seems the most pressing. The constitution should not be written hastily, after all."

"Perhaps, sir Merrick, there is a task more to your tastes available, in scouting out the nature of whatever beast lurks beneath our fair capital?"

"Sir Cheerheart, given this recent news, perhaps your services would be in higher demand amongst the ranks of the recently devastated army. Healing their injured comrades is sure to cement their loyalty."

"I believe we should also insist that the formerly royal army change their insignia, to reflect their new loyalties. The common folk should not conflate our rule with that of the mad king. Though I suppose that can wait until our next meeting."

"As it stands, given my lack of combat ability, I shall continue to work on the hearts and minds of the common people. There should hopefully be a rainstorm in the next week or two, allowing me to demonstrate my gifts."

Convincing Neutral Nobles: Karl Cheerheart (should maybe change to healing the royal army?)
'Convincing' Antagonistic Nobles: Victoria de Miroir
Converting Royal Army: Victoria de Miroir Admiral Yuer
Dealing with Paladins: Jean Merragius
Dealing with Criminals: Bryn Merrick (should maybe change to finding information about the Beast?)
Convincing the Peasants(?): Hera Harinus
Contact the clergy: Jean Merragius
Discovering more about the Beast:Bryn Merrick?
Aiding the royal Army: Karl Cheerheart?

"Anyone have any objections, or wish to volunteer for any of these tasks?

"It seems to me that if we're to be handed the city on a golden platter, our former plans are largely moot, or at least far less vital than previously thought. We should focus on sealing the current deal before worrying about what comes after.

To that end, I readily agree to all three conditions, Admiral. The third is self explanatory, but could you elaborate on what, if any, demands or expectations you hold for the first and second?"

Of course. Under the rule of the Old King, the country was subject to his whims. Government happened, or didn't, based on his mood. The people would like a contract which would guarantee that the new rulers would rule justly and consistently. In addition some clarity into how decisions are made would go a long way towards helping the country transition at this time.

Karl nods. "It seems there are no objections. Does anyone have a magical way to find more information on this monster? If not, we may need to wander blindly in backing a group of paladins and hope we can simply overpower it."

Anna shrugged. "Probably someone in the underworld has a whiff of it. Smugglers seem to love sewers. I'll see if the kingpin knows anything and if not, I'll have a few words with the rest of the crims."

"Oh and Merrick, please do stop slaughtering the legally impaired citizens of the city. Far more useful alive than dead, you know."
