So, in terms of advice for a prospective player, I'd just sum it up as don't monopolise the DMs time, and don't think that your character is super extra special or needs to use their particular skills in every situation.

This has always been my problem when I've played in groups of relatively new DnD players (and was certainly me when I started off); they've come from a background of playing PC games where they are the centre of attention, and now they're cast into having to play as part of a team. 

As Mithras has stated, you're responsible for everyone's enjoyment and to keep moving things forward.
