"SCLA Honor Society"... Is this a scam?
« on: January 02, 2017, 01:22:17 pm »

Hey, guys. I received an E-mail a few days ago to my college E-mail address from something called The Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement (SCLA). The letter read that they had nominated me for membership in their organization, presumably because of outstanding academic achievement or something.

The only problem with that is that my GPA is only 2.5. Over a full point below qualifying for the honor roll at my own college.

Skeptical, I did a little searching on Google. It seems a few other people have gotten this kind of pitch too, and were calling it a scam. SCLA charges a $95 membership fee, for one thing, which was apparently another red flag.

I wasn't entirely sure whether this was a total scam or actually legit, though, so I thought I may as well ask around. Has anyone else gotten these sorts of pitches before? I almost got taken in by this one until I remembered that my GPA was well below average and the only time I got honors was with my GED several years back.

As Ispil said, not a scam. Just scummy and pointless. There are quite a few of these floating around and they do nominally deliver what they promise, it's just that what they promise is worthless and nobody in academia gives two shits about it.

So it's basically to help insecure people feel better about themselves?

And possibly for resume-padding.
