"I'll pass on the wine. I gotta look good for the, um, lady, and I can't hold my liquor for crap. No one with me, either, but that's fine."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"Good point. I guess I'll hold on to the rest for now. So anyway, you three been working together long?"

[Blade Master Model 42]

Eric looked at Dale's hand for a moment before reaching out and shaking it. "As a kid, yeah. Haven't really been back since." Eric withdrew a small, hard bread from his satchel, and bit into it. "Honestly I probably shouldn't bother asking considering I'm going through with it, but doesn't ten thousand seem like an awful lot to any of you? Kind of sketchy, to be honest."

[SOLDIER First]

"And yet you conveniently lack a horse with which to prove yourself..."

[Chevaleresse]

"About thirty seconds, here. Dunno if you count that as long."
"It might be bull, but I figure the risk's worth the cost."

[Blade Master Model 42]

"Yeah, that was pretty much my thought process. Ten thousand is nothing to sneeze at." Eric tore another chunk of bread into his mouth.

[SeriousConcentrate]

  "Yeah, it's a lot. Especially since it's just a moving job. But I can't afford for it to not be true, you know what I mean? I could get my family out of Thalis, or at least set them up for years, on just the five grand. I'm not really expecting us to get the full ten thousand but if we did... damn."

He looked to Caius and chuckled.

  "I've never had one of my own. I used to use my dad's, back when I was growing up, but I haven't been able to afford to buy one since I set out on my own."

"Like I said, my mom and sisters are looking to me to provide for 'em. I can't be buying expensive things like a horse, not when I can just take a job guarding a caravan when I need to get someplace... or just buy passage even if that means going hungry a night or two."

[SOLDIER First]

"Funny, I'm looking to do much the same thing. Though I never told my family, exactly."

[Chevaleresse]

"She asked for escorts. 'S gonna be more dangerous than a moving job. As for what I'm doin' with the money... Well, it's not going to my family, that's fir damn sure."

[SeriousConcentrate]

  "Well yeah, but I can't imagine there's going to be too many people after this woman. If they're going to ban magic the council will be glad to see the back of her, and I doubt we're going to run into some army of bandits. Maybe a few guys looking to filch a bit and run off to pawn it, but nothing too difficult. It's a moving job. And if we're lucky, we'll only have to pack it, wait for the council to not ban magic, then unpack it and get an easy five thousand."

Some might say Dale was a little too optimistic with that last part, but a guy could dream.

[Blade Master Model 42]

"...Nobody pays five thousand for easy, much less ten."

[SeriousConcentrate]

  "I live in hope."

Dale hauled himself back to his feet and dusted off the back of his pants.

"We probably shouldn't sit around too long, speaking of. If other people get there and get the job first we're going to be looking at zero thousand rather than five or ten."

  "I'd hate for a partnership to end this early and poorly."

[Blade Master Model 42]

"Alright then." Eric shoved the last of his roll into his mouth, swung his pack back onto his back, and rose, still chewing.

[Chevaleresse]

"Sounds like a plan." She gave herself a brief patdown before turning to move, more out of instinct than anyone else.

With their little rest break done and over, the group resumed their journey, now with one Dale Barton in tow. It was naught but a short walk to the hill, but that was still apparently enough time for something to go wrong. Just before the group crested the hill a high-pitched scream came from the other side, followed by a few more as well as some shouts along the nature of "Let's get the hell out of here!". Hurrying over the crest, the group saw the source of the commotion.

What looked to be humans made of mud were pursuing groups of people as they ran in terror, likely here to sign on as escorts for Sybil Hallewell. If one was even moderately versed in magical knowledge they would recognize these beings were magical constructs, often used by wizards and witches as controllable guards. After the groups fled a significant distance the constructs "melted" into the ground only to pop back up at what must be their posts before turning their attention to the group.

It seems that this is a sort of trial from Hallewell that must be overcome to meet with her!
