Hello,
I was wondering why when I go to the military menu and I want to create a dagger squad I cant find the required skill point indicator under the uniform type metal,leather,archer and no uniform.
Is it even possible to have a dagger users squad? I never tried it so i dont know and thats why im asking because it is listed under military skills after all but I cant use it in any of the 4 military squad types.
could someone give me an answer since I also searched on the wiki and nothing was mentioned of dagger squads not being a viable option for a military squad.

You have to create a squad using whatever armor then []e quip the individual soldiers with daggers, if you have any.

But wont the be sword dwarfs than?
I mean do I list them as metal, leather, no uniform?

If none of the standard uniforms match your needs, you can create your own uniforms with whatever equipment you want them to use. You can also use a standard uniform and then change the equipment on the militia members manually afterwards, as the uniform is a template specifying what to set up, not a fixed recipe, so any changes you make will remain (on a member per member basis). You can also tweak each member to use different equipment if you want.

well thats not exactly my question, I mean whenever you create a squad and you look if the have the skills they need to be in that category like No-Uniform = Wrestler for example.
I cant see the Knife user skill anywhere in any of those categories, is that a bug or am I missing something, they have the knife user skill and I see that as a military unit skill and the unit labor menu.

That's probably a bug or because knives are foreign weapons.

I had the same when an expert lasher came into my fort, couldn't get him to take the best weapon available so he was punching giant cheetahs to death. Had to manually assign it to him.

A wrestler isn't a dwarf without a uniform, it's an active military dwarf with wrestling skill higher than any other weapon skill.  Dwarves train wrestling when not assigned a weapon, regardless of armor.  And, for example, if you assign an elite wrestler an axe, they will still be listed as wrestlers even though they will now train and wield the axe they're assigned.

I don't know what the title is for knife users, but if you want to find out you'll need to assign them the knife as others have instructed.  Once their "knife user" skill surpasses all their other combat skills then you might find out what the title is.

I think your issue is you aren't manually assigning weapons.

Go to your militia screen, "e" for equipment, "W" for weapon, then the option at the top of the list will be specific weapon.
Select this and you will have a list of every weapon in the fort and you can assign the one you want them to use.

Note that as large daggers are a foreign weapon you won't be able to manufacture any, so you'll need to rely on trading/harvesting enemies for them.
Although I don't know if I've ever seen anyone other than kobolds using them.

I assigned a default Archer uniform to a dwarf and he picked up a knife as a secondary weapon, but there may have been no other melee weapons free in the fort. He even took a few swings with it which is why I noticed he had it.

Soldiers will train the skills of the weapon you assign them between themselves (eventually becoming specialists), a few benefits of knife squads is that they are very proficient at getting critical hits (direct stabs to the skull etc) while the enemy is distracted with the rest of the squad.

Mercenaries could train your soldiers or via stealing (or modding in to craft) some knives from kobolds or visitors just let them individually train (live training on easy targets is effective too)

Dagger dwarves aren't half bad. Against armored foes they generally do better than sword dwarves. The hard part is finding decent iron daggers to use since you can't make them yourself.
