Yeah, if everyone at the festival had a roman-style kevlar shield strapped to their back they could have gone into tortoise formation. There's no need to take the guns away when there are sensible precautions that citizens could take.

apparently after Disney added metal detectors they saw a uptick in people coming because of increased safety. from a Vegas casino security head interview this morning.

... I didn't notice, is any one in here actually advocating for extreme security checks? Or much of anything, for that matter.

News flash Ipsil-- this is not the 80s, and population density is much higher.  As such, the potential consequences for incidence of mass violence has increased, and this has necessiated an increased need for civic security.

You have two choices:  Stop cramming more and more people into dense environments, OR

Keep increasing security to match the increased need for it.

Or the third option, which is the one that this country will (and always) takes, which is to do absolutely nothing whatsoever and forget that this ever happened by next week.

After which, the death toll will rise from 50 people, to 500 people.

Looks like we're gonna need a bigger box of thoughts and prayers.

Why do we have so many mass shootings outside of terrorism these days, anyway? Definitely a problem of today.

Well, this forum will have forgotten in a week too, so.
I won't have forgotten. I may have shut up about it, if only because it's wasted electrons, and because I'm liable to piss a lot of people off. But I won't have forgotten.

Yeah. It fades into the background, so to speak, 'cause you got other shit to do, but you live through this cycle of shit even from a distance enough times and you don't really "forget" about it. Much as some would like to.
It's been this way for a while. Honestly, it's probably an American cultural thing more than anything. Just as it is a cultural thing to not think in the long term whatsoever and just try to put easy bandages over the obvious solutions.
More or less. Mass shootings have been the closest they get to common in the US for... a while. Kinda' have to remember even with all the shit like this the nation's been trending its way towards less violence, not more.
Yay for being a nation of lazy fatasses.
Hell, if we can crack the disenfranchisement bullshit, you might just see some change on that front. Amount of folks effected are enough to swing elections and from demographics that trend sympathetic to gun control measures. Pretty sure there's a handful of other things that could do it, too.

Unfortunately, if it were just a matter of being lazy fatasses no one would give enough of a shit about it to stop regulatory efforts.

I don't have much hope of anything getting done even if gerrymandering is knocked down. They'll just find another way to fuck the system.
And the last election showed me that a whole metric gigafuckton of people in this country are incapable of critical thought. The NRA will just start buying fake news ad buys to sway popular opinion or some shit.

I'm already encouraging my kids to go abroad for college, and then hopefully they'll stay there and have a better life.

Well, one way to think about it is that generations of "TV culture" have replaced community, while extended family is less of a thing as well. Another important fact is that people talk much less to friends of any type, than they did 50 years ago, and it's not just the internet that did that, it started declining in the early TV era. All types of community connections between individuals are much weaker than ever, and it's been replaced by the mass-media TV "glue" to hold everyone together instead. The internet isn't a panacea for that problem, either.

You are dissociated, disillusioned and nobody hears you in such a culture? You have to do something fucked up enough that the media is going to sit up and listen. You're not nobody now, you're somebody, even if that somebody is hated. You're talked about.

Also of note is whether there were random mass-shootings before you'd be immortalized on TV for doing so. While there an army veteran who did a mass shooting in 1949, they really didn't start happening among young people until ~1966, which is well into the TV mass-media era.

I feel like metal detectors and security guards would shift the burden of cost onto private industries that are unrelated to the core problems to mass shootings.  The average hotel is a useless place to carry out a mass shooting IMO.  My apartment is four stories high, I believe with roof access, and its trivial to gain access to the stairwell by hitting every buzzer at the same time.  Should we have a metal detector and a security guard for our building that <20 people live in?

And TBH, I like being able to go into malls/hotels/schools without feeling like I'm walking into a prison.  If we're going to take preventative measures, it seems more direct to target gun sales and trafficking then to start securing every building in the country.
