Best case scenario, we give them shiny things with lots of tits and explosions
That is always a best case scenario.

Man, I honestly feel like our culture is reverting to an earlier, more racist period of history, with how commonplace and shameless it is. I just don't understand it.

At least, I hope we don't come to the point where open, albeit coded, racism and white nationalism is accepted by over half a general population, or ignored over party loyalty.
Hello, I see you've just arrived from 2015. I have some unfortunate news...

In terms of political division, we're in a rough place. I think it does compare with the civil rights era and the Jefferson-Addams era. Not quite pre-civil-war, but there are dangerous similarities. For instance, a strongly polarized supreme court at odds with the public. I could easily see this court handing down a latter-days Dred Scott.

I do wonder, though, how much of the apparent increase in racist extremism is just because, now that the racists have more of a platform, their particular flavors of racism are all competing with each other for bandwidth on a national level rather than locally. You usually see more extreme memes evolve out of that, because they elicit more of an emotional response and get repeated; that'd certainly check with their obsession with "beta libcuck snowflake tears" and so forth.

I think that is true, but I have seen friends who were on the fence drift one way or another into extremism as a result of the current political divides.

This, the effect of combating racism isn't that racism ceases to exist, it's that the more or less harmless background racism gets driven into corners and concentrated to the point where it becomes dangerous.

This is true of many things, see also: The War on Drugs. The War on Terrorism.

Same. Although in my friend's case, it coincided with getting divorced and a deep disillusionment with left tent-pole beliefs like equality and tolerance. What makes it so hard to tease apart though are the memes. When your typically left-leaning friends start posting right-leaning memes and having way too good of a chuckle about them, it's hard to know what their politics actually are anymore. Which I guess was the point.

I kinda hate meme culture right now. It's become a way for average people to put forward ideas and beliefs then take no responsibility for it. "What, it's just a meme." "If it's just a meme, why are you rubbing your hands together like a fucking supervillain while you cackle at them?" "Uuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh *disappears*"
