On the Amazon HQ issue, you also have to contend with the costs incurred locally by a spike in work and stress-related health problems and responding to an increase in mentally ill behaviors that follow from a prominent local employer having extremely toxic workplace policies and culture.

What you're saying there sounds like an assessment of working in an Amazon warehouse or something. I kinda doubt that conditions in an Amazon HQ campus would be identical to that. It'd be like saying that working at the Apple HQ is just the same as assembling iPhones all day.

So, yeah, i get that big employers like Amazon and Apple should be accountable for working conditions in all their workplaces. However, to say that there would be a spike in local costs (completely voiding $24 billion in tax revenues) because the people who work at Amazon HQ will have mental illnesses seems ... a bit of a stretch. It's far more likely that working at a HQ campus for a big tech company is one of the most cushy jobs on the planet.

I think it's more just that the extra workers that'd be attracted by the job openings to relocate would end up moving into the New York Mental Illness Zone and start developing the crazies by proximity.

Opposing amazon on just about any grounds is worthwhile, in my opinion. Trying to act like a company the size getting massive tax breaks being a good thing, even with some hypothetical fantasy land economic benefit on the horizon to pay it back it still should be opposed simply on principle.

The credit for refurbishing an expensive plastics factory into office space makes sense, sure.

But the idea of incentivizing businesses to build here-rather-than-there through tax credits alone is pretty dumb and, I think, a sign that we really are moving into a corporatocracy.

They work precisely as intended. Amazon will pay their bribe make a totally unrelated political donation to the party responsible, and the well oiled wheels of US industry keep turning.

What kind of jobs are they creating with an Amazon HQ? Isn't it just like.... an office building?

The HQ would have been a massive office building, requiring thousands of clerks and other white-collar workers - plus a fair number of blue-collar maintenance and janitorial positions.

And? We talked about this the last time this was "uncovered."

Finally got around to watching the full interview.  This is supposed to be dirt on him?  Seriously?

I mean... I understand that it could be put out there and would effectively reinforce a lot of people's negative opinions of him.  But on an ideological basis.  This isn't exactly scandal.  Nothing is lost here.  The people who are turned off by this interview are people who are astronomically unlikely to have given him a chance in the first place.  It's just a reflection of the States' political insanity regarding anything to do with communism/socialism.  For anybody not hung up on that shit in a reactionary fashion, this is a fantastic interview, and a kind of thing that others of my political leaning desperately look for to energize and rally around.

There should be a minimum penis size to be a world leader so we can put an end to pointless measuring contests like this nonsense in Kasmir.

Links on that PTTG? I know India and Pakistan have been at each other’s throats over Kashmir for decades but nothing about it flaring up to defcon 5 levels recently. It’d be more relevant to the East Asian thread, though it’s not exactly EAST Asia.

Found a bbc link. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47383634 Sounds like they’ve had worse situations than this and neither side wants to escalate, that’s a far cry from saying a nuclear war is brewing.
