The first national strategy for fighting antisemitism is finally here. What's in it?
https://www.npr.org/2023/05/25/1178188513/biden-antisemitism-strategy

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I haven't read the link in the article to the policy itself yet. What's in the npr article is generally a good thing but what is in the spoiler is concerning to a not easily dismissed degree. This particular definition has been troublesomely crafted in some portions of it, in regards to shielding from criticism of state policies of Israel in particular regarding to right leaning or right wing government policy. It has been pushed heavily for widespread adoption despite these flawed portions.

He can't run for governor next term (has hit the term limit), so it's a forgone conclusion on that front. Part of the reason he's fucking around as hard as he is, is because he's trying to lay some kind of screwed up foundation for whatever he does next. Why he thinks a failed presidential run will do much, I'unno, but deshitis has not exactly shown the greatest amount of foresight in the world so *shrugs*
Do you honestly think that will stop a facist like him?
After all he was supposed to resign after he started running for president but he changed the law literally hours after he started his run for president. AFAIK he could do the exact same thing to the term limit.

Governors don't change laws. The legislature changed the law, which is their prerogative, since they make the laws. If the term limit isn't in the state constitution, then yes, they can change it; the people voted them in to decide what the law is. Democratically elected lawmakers making laws through the Constitutionally established legal process is, of course, widely known to be a pernicious form of fascism.

Wow, what a pile of semantics. How about this; the fascists in the florida legislature, under direction from their glorious leader desantis would extend his term limit.

Dictators don't change the law regarding term limits themselves, they use the people/institutions they put in place to do it for them. See: Erdogan; Putin.
Hell, even Hitler didn't unliterally seize power; he used the parliment to do it for him. I assume that wasn't fascism either?

I mean, that's fine, but doing so doesn't make them fascists. You can consider them fascists for other reasons.

... strictly, no, fascism was what Mussolini was doing around that time. Different Axis country.
Less glibly, changing term limits is not in itself fascist, at least not if the word "fascism" is expected to have any meaning. Although it's not exactly the same thing, was Franklin Roosevelt a fascist for violating the norm of Presidents respecting an implied two-term limit, forcing the law to be changed to enforce it?

Ah yes, if it isn't from the Faces region of Italy it's just sparkling authoritarianism.

As you say, being fascist (or any political ideology) is more complex then a single action.
Which is why I wasn't saying they were fascist soley because of a single anti-democratic action that hadn't even happened yet but rather because of their political actions as a whole.

I did say I was being glib with that first thing.
Anyway, that's fine. I wasn't trying to make a political point; I really just wanted to point out that DeSantis doesn't change laws himself, but the legislature does it in accordance with the accepted democratic protocol. If the constituents want it enough to keep electing those legislators, then that's just democracy working as intended. Nobody said it would always be a good thing.

...I'm reasonably sure Hitler and Mussolini running as Fascist made them Fascist. It was their declared political affiliation.

Hitler didn't run as Fascist, though. That was Mussolini's party. Hitler ran as National Socialist. That was the joke. At the time, the word Fascist wouldn't have meant anything in Germany, except as the name of a foreign political party with no connection to them whatsoever. It hadn't become a political byword yet.

Reports of a Deal In Principle on the debt ceiling, more information will probably crop up around 9:30.

That's where the gerrymandering and voter suppression come in, to keep a stronger red majority. And of course florida, being in charge of their own redistricting laws, isn't going to change it to weaken their party.

Hot off the presses, the first draft of the debt ceiling deal.

The World Wonders how different the final bill will actually look.

Interesting mechanical is that McCarthy can vote against the revised bill that passes the House. If a majority of Democrats AND Republicans vote for the bill in the House, then it passes.

By voting against a revised bill, McCarthy can claim his original bill did everything that MAGA Republicans wanted, and keep his Speakership.it's called lying

Here's text of the deal.

It's... well, I'm not going to go into too much detail aside from saying most of the press coverage is accurate. The permitting language is potentially rather worse in my eyes, and there are a few 'this is probably very stupid and meaningless, but maybe a clever ploy that will pay off in future years' provisions on later-year spending.

Honestly unsure whether this is enough of a win for McCarthy to placate his caucus - I think the bill will pass, but not sure what it'll mean for his speakership.
