It does make some difference. It's a strong signal for the midterms, as this election had midterm-average turnout and still resulted in a Democratic advantage like that seen elsewhere. Lamb himself recommitted to the cause of unionism and won with it under harsh circumstances, so that's back from the dead if the DNC aren't morons.

It's back from the dead in regions with a strong union presence provided the advantage in votes is offset by the decrease in support from the donor class, bearing in mind that donors have a longer memory than voters. Lamb's victory suggests that calculus is more favorable than it used to be, but there are reasons other than the DNC being morons to be cautious about embracing it.

(Note that we can't assume that Lamb only managed 20pts of shift by appealing the way that he did. It's possible that a different and less 'off-Democrat' approach could have given 21+pts.  And that's without taking into account his opponents'  relative success (Libertarian) and failure (Republican) in order to actively contribute to that shift from the original Trumpish datum.  -   Someone with a time-machine and/or access to various near-identical parallel dimensions could perhaps quantify and qualify it all, but I'm not sure their earlier experiment in how best to prove their ability to do so worked well enough to convince them to tell our time-line/universe, so maybe they'd have to just set themselves up as an analyst of some kind, maybe of poll figures...)

Honestly, fuck the doners. I mean that on a pragmatic level. You can have all the money in the world but lose if you're a cardboard cutout. If there's anything to be learned from Trump's dumb, dumb political strategies it's not to be skittish.

People can tell when you're being avoidant or pandering and they don't like it. There will always be more rich people with weird politics for you to draw from. There's not always fire. And without fire, you will fail.

Yet without a bucket of wet sand, you will burn... unless the fire was started by one of those flourine compounds which oxidize better than oxygen... as they'll happily ignite stuff like rubber gloves, sand, chemists, and of course the ashes of stuff you thought was already burned completely!

Engraved here is a rendition of an image of the Dwarf Fortress learning curve. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It depicts an obsidian overhang which menaces with spikes of obsidian and tears. Carved on the overhang is an image of Toady One and the players. The players are curled up in a fetal position. Toady One is laughing. The players are burning.
The VectorCurses+1 tileset strikes the square set and the severed part sails off in an arc!

So you spilled some chlorine trifluoride on the floor... big deal. It will burn out.   .... .... Eventually.

It's always fun to re-visit Sand Won't Save You This Time as well as other articles in the categories Things I Won't Work With, etc. Nothing (particularly) political/US-related, but worth sharing anyway.

People can tell when you're being avoidant or pandering and they don't like it.

They apparently like it well enough; they elected Trump. All other mitigating factors aside, that a con man with zero political experience or expertise got close enough to winning for Russian meddling and Clinton's unpopularity to push him over the finish line would indicate that perhaps the electorate doesn't value authenticity as much as their clamoring might indicate.

Trump is authentic. Authentically terrible, but authentic. His positions are for the most part things he's seemed to believe in for decades, and despite wolololoing all over the place on social issues his isolationist nationalism and bullheaded economic beliefs can be observed all the way back in the 90s and previous. Further, his personal style is consistent and interesting.

I'm going to stop sounding like I'm praising Trump now and say that politicians have to be interesting and not doner sockpuppets. If your best personal conviction is "I deserve to win, pls win" like the avatars of Bland Neoliberal Corporate Stasis have you're begging to lose. The only thing worse than that is making like Theresa May or that one guy in Virginia with a 25 year incumbency advantage and just not campaign.

I suppose it depends in part on which version of Trump you mean; to some degree his mask has been fragmenting, but when he has his whole branding apparatus in place and functioning, he's the "blue-collar billionaire." The whole "he tells it like it is" schtick is just part of that attempt to seem earnest by saying things that people with his wealth generally avoid saying in public, but that they are shocking does not make them any less calculated.
In a way, Trump is like a glitzier version of Dubya: he plays the idiot knowing that people will either believe the act or believe that, by seeing through it, they're seeing through to the "real him." Conveniently, the "real him" is as canny as they believe themselves to be, instead of merely a different, sadder, more mundane kind of idiot.
Trump is neither the buffoon he pretends to be at his rallies nor the tycoon he wants you to think is putting on the act. His team allows certain of his vices to show through to lend an air of authenticity to both, but beyond the hamburgers and the affairs is just a deeply unhappy old man who was never quite as smart as his dad wanted him to be.

... if you're ignoring or massively romanticizing how piss poor his reaction to that over the years has been, I guess. That "just" is caveated by lashing out at all sorts of different people, indulging in a host of unethical behavior, and generally being about the worst sort of unhappy old person an unhappy old person can be. Or person regardless of age that hasn't started outright murdering people, anyway.

Assuming that's actually what's happening and he's not just, say, a malignant narcissist of the clinical sort acting like one. I'd bet more money on the latter, personally. I've known sad old people with daddy issues and they didn't end up that sort of jackass.

That "just" was meant to indicate the relative mundanity of who Trump actually is relative to who he claims to be, not any sort of moral judgment. Yes, he's awful -- I wouldn't say he's significantly more awful than many people who have spent their lives surrounded by yes-men, but that's a very low bar to clear. He's certainly more volubly so than most, partly by design.

My point is simply that he's not as special as either his cheerleaders or his detractors make him out to be, once you account for the effect of his enablers. He's a very unfortunately common sort of terrible, and it's not like we don't all know people as racist or as sexist or as generally spiteful.
