Trump is now weighing imposing a quarantine on New York. This New Yorker says that quarantining New Rochelle with the National Guard didn't help us much now did it! Already entirely too damn late. But why stop being dumb now, when we're already on such a roll?

It's hard to know who we should trust when the president gives out messages that end up conflicting with another trusted official like the president. These classic he-said-he-also-said situations always end up ugly for both, when it's just his word against his. Ultimately, I'm not sure which to believe.

Well, with this particular president it's quite easy. He can't open his mouth without lies pouring out. I just assume everything he says is wrong.

POSITIVE CORONAVIRUS NEWS

A couple people who have before utterly refused to so much as talk about our healthcare system because we don't want it to change ever because that Obama guy forced change and it was awful (etc, etc) had positive conversations about healthcare reform with me today.

Coronavirus has shown that our system is laughably unprepared for events such as this. They even referred to it as "single-payer healthcare" instead of "socialism" during the conversation. It's forcing people to confront realities they didn't need to before.

Most people can accept that sick people getting you sick is a bad thing, and maybe allowing them to stay home sick instead of making your food or whatever job they have is better. Or that people who are unable to work because of untreated injuries might not contribute to the economy in any positive way. I think you can even get most people to agree that if the government can force you to have health insurance because it's a benefit for the economy, that the government should also provide it, especially when even the most negative studies show that it would save taxpayers and the government money.

But if you suggest that the government provide healthcare through an insurance program, people start going crazy.

I’m still trying to come to terms with the fact governments are seriously considering lock-downs and 25% of the economy has simply ceased to exist. Astounding. Truly astounding. They didn’t close the pubs during the blitz, but I guess the blitz wasn’t contagious.

Post COVID-19 will be a very different world. It’s encouraging to see some people are questioning the government Intervention = socialism/evil mantra.

Trump just announced that his administration is going to be investigating why the hospitals are using a suspiciously high number of masks, because he just doesn't understand how it's possible to use so many masks.

It's nice to know that Trump can stay focused on nonsensical conspiracy theories even in the most trying of times. This is exactly what we elected him for.

I believe the implication is that hospitals are asking the government for more masks than they need, so that they can turn around and sell the extra masks to other hospitals for a profit.

It's like something out of a movie. The one asshole character who in the midst of a crisis does nothing to help and actively tries to make undercut everyone around them.

Coronavirus might only be 2-3 times a deadly as the flu, but it's significantly more contagious because nobody has been previously exposed and gained an immunity. So you need to multiply that 2-3 by a several times as many people getting it. "Millions dead" doesn't exactly make the economy better, either. The blitz isn't a good comparison, because the blitz killed fewer people, and staying home didn't prevent deaths in the blitz.

Edit: For an on-topic conversation, did anyone else see Biden's Coronavirus ad talking about what a good job Ronald Goddamn Reagan did with the AIDs crisis (ie used it to kill off as many citizens as possible, and take their rights away)?
