You'd get the described behavior if you use the DFHack "getplants" command multiple times with unpausing in between targeting the same plants. In that case, DF changed after getplants was written, so repeated designation resulted in repeated production of wood cutting jobs targeting the same tree, resulting in a single wood cutter felling a tree, walk away, return to the spot displaying the wood cutting job, walk away,... until all the wood cutting jobs for that tree had been processed, go to the next tree and repeat the dance there.

Thanks Loci, that explains a lot!
I have the LNP with the latest version, and yes, I use DFHack.
To designate those trees I used the "autochop" command in the designation menu. I'll try to cancel and do them individually.

I undesigned all trees in the map and selected some and worked!!

Site reclaims are buggy. I don't recommend playing them. My two cents.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.
