Linked dwarves?

I'm trying to make a bedroom for my militia commander, but every time I do, it assigns the bed to a farmer, as well as the commander. I've tried it with a table, and it also assigns it to the same farmer. Is this a bug, or is there a reason for this and can I turn it off?

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
