Water Wheel and Millstone
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:45:16 pm »

I am unable to run water wheel powered millstone and screw press just now in contrary to my some years ago experience.
I tried these desings:

A             B             C            D            E            F

~             ~             ~             ~             ~            ~
~             ~             ~             ~             ~            ~
WM         W           W            W            W          W
WGM      WGM     WG         WAG       WAM    WM
WM         W           WM         W  M       W          W
~              ~            ~             ~              ~           ~
~              ~            ~             ~              ~           ~

Neither one is working. Water wheel writes "Active" and shows powered/needed, gearboxes and millstones are animating, but everytime I get "Jobs removed from unpowered millstone".
Water wheel is "hanging", gearbox and axle "stable".
Water flows one layer below wheel N->S with water depth 5..7, through corridor one tile width.

What I am doing bad?

Make sure the water is running. Sometimes the water will stabilize and cut off power temporarily, which is enough to cancel jobs.

Check on the final piece of gears that it's receiving power. It's possible you've used a vertical instead of a horizontal piece, or something like that.

Also make sure you're using a millstone and not a quern; a quern is the man-powered version.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

It is a millstone: ("Jobs removed from unpowered millstone").
How to check that a gear is receiving power? A gear is simply a grear, not a vertical of a horizontal as a axle is.
Water. This is probably the point.
Water is running, it is a stream of a width one tile from an aquifier. Demands water wheel a water depth gradient?
Wiki says "at least depth 4/7"...
Rivers or brooks have a same depth over map and power wheels.
And the wheel says "Active" - it means it is powered, not?

Problem solved! It was water.
Flowing water makes waves and anytime the depth under the wheel is 555, 666 or 777, the wheel stops.
This makes perpetual work cancellations a announcements "Jobs removed from unpowered millstone".

I tried to change the wheel position over the water, but "wrong waves" occur everywhere.
I had to add a second wheel and join both of them by an axle. Joined wheels "resist" to water waves.  :P
