I just rolled a map with a little flat land on the bottom(hardly 50 tiles wide) and an enourmous mountain covering the rest. I have a magma vent and a humongous supply of magnetite(and if it isn't enough i'll reverse to .32a and melt a few bolts) so i'm going to build a 76 stories high iron spire on the flat area. All i currently have is a little worker camp at the place where the base is supposed to be and a mountaing in the process of being stripmined. at 768x768, this is, ofcourse, going sloooooooooooow.

Well, I definitely can't make the warheads yet, but I should be able to house a nice steel missile.

A retracting bridge will make a good cover too.

Well, I've seen reports that alcohol can be made to explode, so pitchblende + booze = dirty bomb? You could cage a fire-man to act as a detonator.

Will your missile be liquid of solid fueled?(booze vs coal stockpiles in the boosters, maybe?)

Also, if you have enough aluminum, it might be better to build with that instead of steel.

Uh, right now all I'm concerned with is figuring out how to get irrigation to my plump helmet farm plot.

And after that, I'm going to build a midair house with that cyan rock.

No, really, I'm going to put it on as few supports as possible.

Can anyone tell me what the minimum supports required are?

t''s not illegal. The government just doesn''t want you doing it.

Minimum supports for ANYTHING = 1

Cave-in code is sorta temporarily suspended. Kinda like habeas corpus!

To my knowledge (and experience), you only need a single support to keep something up, regardless of how big it is.

You could, for instance, build a 10x10 (or whatever) tower straight up into the sky, and have it all supported by a single, slightly mangy, wooden support in the Northeast corner on the bottom.

Same goes for things on a single Z-level.  Have a massive plain stretching out from a cliffside that's hanging on by a single tile of ground.  A single, lovely, itchingly tempting tile.

Or just edit the init to [CAVEINS = NO]
That's fun too.

I can imagine the dwarf children.

"Look ma! I'm defying gravity!"
"Get away from the floating fortress dear, you could put your eye out."

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Any thoughts on building a device that could raise whales or other fish up so i can build my aquarium in the sky?

We got to float em up somehow.

If you can catch a whale or a fish, I'm sure yo can have dwarves carry it... if the journey doesn't kill them.

I think elevators haven't been fully worked out yet, unfortunately.  :(

My current fortress is stuck between 3 options.
Steel Fortress. I've got limestone, magma, marble and magnetite.
Glass Fortress. I've got sand and magma.
Farming Fortress. I'm using Teldin's mod. Plant extracts are way over priced.

Maybe I should build a combination of all 3.

building a wooden skyscraper, suspended over a man-made lake by support columns which are hooked to a nearby lever

i plan to eventually make my leaders tomb at the top, everything made of gold, and fill the rest with bedrooms and thoroughly  lock every dwarf i have inside except for one mechanic, then pull the lever and watch 100+ dwarves crushed by falling debris and their leaders tomb posthumously caving their skulls in

my 1 mechanic will then attempt to carry on the fort without them!

Sky cells. I have a nice little circular chasm that is covered with a few layers of stone at the top, the plan is to put 1x1, 1x2, etc. cells around the edge with the only way out into the chasm in the middle. Maybe make it ramps in the cells instead, so all teh prisoners have sloped floors.

Also, I had to descend 30 levels from a plateau to reach the treeline, which took all spring, and there is a huge magma pipe right at the valley entrance. If I channel the magma right to the edge of the map, will it just flow off the map and mostly drain my pipe?
