Capturing Large Animals
« on: March 26, 2017, 02:12:14 am »

There's a giant hamster that's been wandering about my fortress area that I've been wanting to catch for a time, but I don't know how. How can I catch and train large animals like this? Is it even possible?

Yes it is!
Consider the crosshair trapping design on the wiki: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Trap_design#Crosshair_trapping

Build several barriers like these and you will  capture wild animals eventually. Goblins also. Even dragons. :p

When you have a wild animal in a cage, designate a training zone and assign a trainer via the « z » menu. Check the wiki on that also, it's pretty clear.

Another trick I have found useful if there are any rivers on your map, build a single tile wide ramp across them and then place cage traps on them.  Animals wanting to cross the river will be forced to move over the trap.
