Time to move on to the next step.  See if I can buy a spyglass, and use the View word to enchant it into an item capable of seeing through solid objects, so that I can use it to scout the hidden base.  Take several attempts if necessary.

If I have at least 11 mana left after the attempt, it's probably time for some permanent buffs.  I'm going to have a meeting where I want to convince the burnt-out people of this town into what might well be a doomed attempt to save their kidnapped population.  Before that, I want to be prepared, by casting a strengthen spell on my willpower, that is, the ability to read people's emotions and provide succor, support, reassurance.  Also, try to become cuter as well.  Essentially, the nonmagical offensive portion of a d12 willpower die.

Regardless of the results of the second portion, use my new spyglass to examine portions of the base.  Not enough for details, just enough to get an overall impression of what's going on down there, and taking a good look at at least one person.

Spoiler: Saeko Hirahara (click to show/hide)
I know what you're going for here because we talked about it before, but be careful in wording these things in the future. "See through solid objects" on its own is basically just a spy glass that can't see anything.
[1+1 v 8] -8 mana. Ouch.
[1+1 v 3] -3 mana. Yikes

And at this point I'm gonna stop because you're at 10 mana and I'm not sure you wanna possibly sink everything into this.

spyglass was 3 gold by the way.

"Hmph. You first, 'sir'."

Wave the man forwards, letting my eyes adjust to see what's past the stage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The man shrugs and steps forwards, announcing in a joking fashion that the next performer is a bit shy. You hear a round of gentle laughter after that comment and, try as you might, you still can't see out into the crowd. At best you can make out the shapes of humanoids at tables scattered around the room.

Continue waiting quietly in the well. Try to make out some of what the voices are saying.

Spoiler: Frick Varmer (click to show/hide)
The voices seem to be those of the bandits and they are most definitely discussing where you could be. You hear them mention the well and there is the sound of footsteps moving towards you.

Give the signal for the camp, wake Ecalir and our mercs.

Have melee&ranged merc team wake the rest of the caravan and ensure civvies get secured correctly.

Secure myself to my two melee bodyguards and take a look at the furthest torches through my binocs: can I see anything? Compare what I see with the info we were given earlier and see if I can come up with anything, eg. does the effect seem to be the same but just expressed differently, or does it seem more like something else is going on?

Either way, get into position behind the boxes. Wait with the rope spell till we get confirmation of bogeys, but make sure the actual rope is in place.

If the zone of non-existence comes up to the edges of the camp without us spotting any enemies and without me figuring out what this means, then do a viscera sensing spell to detect if there are nasties somewhere beyond the encroaching zone.

Spoiler: Darwin Zeppeli (click to show/hide)
You send out word to everyone and get ready to defend the camp. As everyone scrambles around behind you, you keep an eye on the torches. You're pretty sure this is the same effect as before, just coming into existence. Likely those torches are beyond the edge of the "Bubble" and are being left behind in the merging.  A few more torches vanish but then they stop vanishing and instead start getting fuzzy; the fog is rolling in. No sign of bogeys yet though.  You keep in cover and wait. Everything is quiet.
[5v6]
You stay still and wait.

Continue scavenging.
Spoiler: Robert Grant (click to show/hide)
(Scavenging goes off senses, by the way.)
[4v2]
You dig up what appears to be a metal skull. There are still a pair of what look like glass eyes in it and the inside of the head is filled with incredibly complex clockwork mechanisms.

Join Darwin behind the boxes, keep my rifle at the ready. If I see any movement that isn't part of our little caravan, shoot it.

Spoiler:  Écalir Speedwagon (click to show/hide)

You get into position.
[1v3]
You wait silently.

Continue my conversation with the golems:

"So, you guys control the floor levels in here, right? like, you decide which floors go where or something like that? Say, could you show me how it works? Does it have somethign to do with the other wall over there?"

Spoiler: Felix Testimony (click to show/hide)
The golems give no indication they understand you or are responding to your questions. However they also make no aggressive motion towards you. It might be possible to go look at what they're doing without getting punched to death. Maybe.

hmmmm.
I start thinking on where I could get the live animal I'm looking for. I suppose there's a chance that they're chickens or fish alive at market, but with everything falling apart I'm not so certain. I don't want to just go searching for someone's pet to condemn if I can help it... um... actually, I'm by the docks anyway... Yeah, lets ask around here, might be simple as buying a live fish off someone and taking it in a bucket with us.

(PW rolled for a third attempt following those two, so I got the magic spyglass in the end.)

Examine my new spyglass, and use it to get a basic overview of the base.  Not many details, just a quick glance.

After that.. try for the previously mentioned cuteness buff.  (The portion of a d12 willpower die that only applies to offensive nonmagical uses.)  I've used up all the bad luck already, right?

Punched to death, you say? Well, climb on down then, and attempt to look at their stuff. if they do start punching,, attempt to acquire the material, [Golem], while also attempting to not quite die, via dodging, not taking the blows in vital spots, aybe climbing back out of reach, should the opportunity avail (unlikely, on account of these guys being much taller than ol' Felix MyMomAlwaysSaidIShouldDoSomethingSafeLikeGolfingorMovieCritiqueOrPornStar Testimony).

Do the rope spell: enchant the rope near the camp entrance so that it'll jump up and ensnare if a bugman comes close to it. The effect only needs to last for about 10 seconds (or whatever time is needed to ensure the target is well disabled), then it becomes regular rope again. Try to make it so that it won't activate when one of us comes near it though, if that's possible.

If Darwin's rope trick catches a bugman, shoot at it. If I see any kind of movement in the fog/invis-o-whatever, shoot at it. If neither of these things happen, just use my gut feeling to loose a shot in the direction where I think the bugmen will most likely be creeping from.

If possible, try to shoot at least one enemy non-lethally, so we can interrogate them later.

A good fishmonger proves extremely difficult to find at this hour, among the rioting and all. You dash about, trying to get anyone to give or sell you a farm animal but either the people you talk do don't have an animal or aren't willing to sell them.

(PW rolled for a third attempt following those two, so I got the magic spyglass in the end.)

A quick look through the spyglass, with some focusing to penetrate through the stone, shows that there is indeed a rather massive cavern under the lake, though  the way into it isn't actually through the bottom of the lake; its through a tunnel in the mountains on the other side of the lake. Maybe that mine the other guy told you about? The cavern itself seems quite large, mostly a large room of sorts with lots of small caverns branching off or tunnels cut out into the stone. From what you can see, there's a large structure built in the center of the cavern as well, Its pretty far off so you can't make out fine details but it looks like the cavern is filled with lights of some kind?
[2v3]
Your attempt to increase your cuteness quite literally blows up in your face with a spray of magical backlash. Your hair ends up standing on end, smoldering, and you're pretty sure you have no eyebrows.

Spoiler: Felix Testimony (click to show/hide)
You walk over to one of the little panels the golems are looking at and sort of crane your neck to look at them.  The panel you're looking at has tiny moving cubes that seem to mirror those on the wall...though it only seems to mirror a section of the wall, not the entire thing?

"What a crowd of degenerates."

Step up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You step out from the side and onto the stage to what you can only describe as extremely ironic or sarcastic applause. The man next to you smiles and says "This young lady has some questions to ask, I believe". Scattered giggles and titters are the response but you feel as though there is a lot of attention being focused on you right now.

Gather a few scavengers and go deeper, try to find another robot.
Spoiler: Robert Grant (click to show/hide)
[5v1]
You convince several other scavengers to follow you and lead them through the scrapyard plains until you find an area that looks promising. Its the wreckage of some kind of large skyship, and though the ship itself has been picked down to its metallic bones, you get the feeling that the soft and sulfurous mud around it might hide treasures.
[1]
Despite this, you spend an hour or two digging about to no avail. Your fellow scavengers find a few small things but no great prize.

Do the rope spell: enchant the rope near the camp entrance so that it'll jump up and ensnare if a bugman comes close to it. The effect only needs to last for about 10 seconds (or whatever time is needed to ensure the target is well disabled), then it becomes regular rope again. The ropes twitch and throw blue sparks but then go limp again.  You hiss in annoyance as the spell fails to take hold.

And then, as suddenly as it began, the fog starts recoiling away from the camp.

[10v4]
Suddenly Darwin thinks of something. If these attacks are really the coordinated actions of an intelligent master, then chances are he's only going to direct attacks towards opponents he's fairly certain he can overcome. If he were watching this, with the torches and the rope and everything, he might have guessed this was an ambush. And if he guessed that, there's no way he would go through with the attack.

eh, was a bad idea anyway, nearly forgot the animal has to be able to cry out for aid and that isn't a fish thing to do.
keep my eyes open for stray animals amidst the rioting, even a rodent will probably do, rabbits and rats and such are perfectly capable of squealing after all. chaos like this is bound to displace all kinds of animals, some abandoned pets, others wild or stray animals whose homes have become untenable.

Tap a panel cube. If that does nothing, go climb the opposite wall to get to the exit. Attempt to acquire the material "puzzle" or "bigass stone blocks" or whatever, should the climb prove suitably risky.

Time for the meeting.  Gather some people who have lost loved ones and are interested in ending this curse.  Also gather other important people from this community, who may have good ideas to contribute towards the plan, as well as one of the constables managing the bounty.  Try to include the familiar breeder, if possible, and at least one soldier/mercenary, if possible.

Pay a couple gold if necessary to rent the public room of the inn for this meeting.  Bring the spyglass.  If I feel it would make for a better impression, cast a Grow spell to regrow my missing fingernails and eyebrows, although only if I feel it would be better than appearing haggard from my spell efforts.

Anyway, when the people arrive, mention that I've now got a way to view the location where the kidnapped people are from, and a likely route for how to get to them.  Try to use a View spell to temporary link what the spyglass sees to be projected onto the inn window, trying again once if it fails.  If it fails, just pass the spyglass around to the other people so they can see for themselves.

Conduct the meeting as written above.  If it would help things, use a Grow spell to fix eyebrows/fingernails.  Use up to two View spell attempts to link a large window to the spyglass, so all can see.  Show them the cavern and the base, and, if possible, what's going on in the interior.  Get input from the various people, and try to get permission to use some of the bounty money on supplies for the rescue attempt.  Ask about other resources, such as the availability of the following:  weapons, armour, robots/automata, combat capable creatures, (if buffed), like a snake, availability of mercenaries or volunteers, presence of an apothecary, presence of a chemist, and miners/ mining equipment in case we need to repair or improve the path down.  Lastly, ask if there are any other mages in the area, or if anyone has any jade pieces for words like the ones I bought, as some of them might be useful.

In the end, try to rally the people to be in favor of a rescue attempt, and try to get permission for at least one hug.  Don't hug too many people, I want them to spread this inspiration to the rest of the town.

Well, if the bugs won't come to us, we'll just have to come to the bugs.

Start sprinting into the mist, try to pass over into the other side. Make sure to stick together with Ecalir though, I'd rather not go through than either of us endign up in there alone. Our mercs are coming with us as well of course (or at least those that can keep up).
