I am also delighted by the tale of doggies.  Tee hee.

And further delighted that stress levels appear to have some resolution for our long-suffering friend.  Frustrating that it lasted so long.

Okay, before I start this report, I would like to submit some documents I have been working on. They are all WIP, some informations may not be accurate or up to date, but they are mostly correct. They will need more work that is for sure.

Geographical map :

Political map :

Cheat sheet on Minbazkar's human kingdoms :

Spring 157

The hunters
It was the morning of the fourth of March. Because a cold shower was dripping from the gray sky, birds were mostly silent. The town was waking up on the eastern side of the bridge. It would be a  slow, uneventful day, spent rather at home or in a heated workshop – it would still take a couple weeks for the spring warmth to settle over Kimaeslo Ori.
Despite the cold and the rain, a brave – if small – hunter was hunting for its prey.  Perhaps it was his ancestral instincts, hunger or boredom driving the little feline to brave the weather – from dawn onward, he looked for wild hamsters, chimpunks and mices. Finding nothing in town, he first scoured the outskirt, where he was equally unlucky.

Hours past and the feline started to grow restless. He crossed the bridge to the western side – perhaps the relative widlerness of the western bank would be more gamey.

Unlike the little cat, there was no reason for Bosa to hunt. As a goblin, he wasn't hungry, and as a retainer of Ngom Snunngoso, he should have been with his comrades preparing for the attacked they planned.

But from the moment he saw the cat, alone and within reach, Bosa decided he wanted to ruin the smal animal. To hell with the preparations : he had the opportunity of ruining the day of something and decided very quickly he would not let it slip.

The hunter, sudently, had turned into a prey.

A note on warlord Ngom Snunngoso

In the year 83, the small central agrariuan kingdom of Egapesor was ruled by King Ases. In western  Tadecen at the time, the political going were mostly influenced by the shifting war and alliances of human and elven kingdoms – goblins of the east had yet to manifest themselves in great numbers, and their crimes this far were not as commonplace.
One day, when an Osmite child snatcher made his way in the city of Cusithamec and abducted his third born, King Ases did not know how to react, and the abductee could not be retrieved.

King Ases of Egapesor had a large legacy, life continued and the incident was soon forgotten – King Ases lived a relatively calm life until 146, where he died peacefully in his bed. The power went to his first son, King Kara, still in power to this day.

For the poor abductee, a four years old boy by the name of Mubo, it was the beggining of a long walk through hell. He was imprisonned in Bosangasma, the capitale city of Osme to be reeducated by his new masters.
He left his irons at 10 years of age to work the earth, and at 12, he married a girl about his age, another abductee from Egapesor, and over the years, the couple had seven children.

Of those seven kids, Ngom was the youngest. She was born in 109, spent her early working life as a bowyer on the village of Slaxuzustun, east of the Thruniino salt lake. She however knew something about her upbringing. Maybe she heard her father mention King Ases, maybe it is the way she was raised – Ngom knew she was to have the destiny of a queen.

And so, as she was producing bows and arrows to keep herself fed, she also worked diligently to create her own warband, recruiting every single goblin and troll she could get an ascendant on.

When, in last year, Histekapap hills totally fell to pearlite control, Ngom knew it was her time. She had a couple hundreds goblins under her thumb, and she saw pearlite army busy in the north – it was now or never. She gathered her horde, and took the southern route to Sposmipo wetlands – the mud, especially in spring, was an ordeal – it took them a week to reach Kimaeslo Ori.

The first among her troops arrived in the night of the 3 march 157. Bosa was a small leader among them, and was tasked, of course, to prepare a temporary siege settlement ; that would hold un til the whole force could be gathered and launched like a projectile against the bridgetown.

Bosa took his task very seriously – until he saw that isolated cat, after which he forgot anything about it. Haven't Bosa seen that fateful feline, maybe he could have prepared the settlement – maybe Ngom main force would have gathered harmoniously, and maybe the events would have unfolded completely differently.

He signed his underlings to carry without him, and with his silver saber in hand, he approached the small fury creature – remaining as undetected as would allow his heavy copper mail. Slowly, very slowly gaining ground.

Nested twists

And so, it is where we left the action. Bosa, the osmite swordsman, under the cold morning shower of spring, saber in hand, ready to pounce on a cat whose martyr he deemed more important than the invasion he was task to prepare.

Suddently, he leaped forward. The poor stray cat was totally taken by surprize – the silver saber hit him in the rear leg. The crude and blunt blade did not cut him very deep, but its weight and force crushed his bones and threw him on the ground.

For a moment, Bosa thought he'd let the cat crawl away. With a leg broken, he'd probably die on his own. Bosa would then go back to his gathering comrades and participate to the preparations. He thought about it – and decided against the idea. He wasn't satisfied. Something, learnt early in his childhood, reclaimed satisfaction in not only death, but the infliction of senseless suffering.
It was not, as one could assume, something like lashing out, seeking revenge on weaker than oneself – it wasn't even boredom.
It was a feeling, common among goblins but unknown in human kingdoms, that consumes itself only in inflicting harm – a nameless feeling then, but which could aptly be named « evil ».

Bosa started to hit the poor cat again, with his blunt sword, with his foot, as the poor creature was hissing helplessly.
With his victim now throughly beaten down, Bosa felt satisfied at last : time to end up that game and go back to work. He lifted his sword – for the last time – and dropped it on the critter.

However, only half his arm came down – the other half, on the contrary, went straight up – with the saber still in hand !

It was Princeling Sothro, son of Prince Ryukan of Thomocemir – and with the pearlite army on his heels.

It was only when the gauntled hand fell on the muddy sylvan soil that Bosa understood that for the second time this morning, the predator had turned into prey.

Crushing engagement

From the top of the bridge, the pearlite army could see the whole scene develop. The hissing of the poor cat alarmed the whole garrison, which armed and deployed immediately. Sothro, who was preparing a sword training for the morning, and who due to his young age was the nimblest of the captains, was the quickest to action.

Bosa was slain immediately – and the Osmite army was still gathering in their camp. They were wholly unprepared.
Having saved the cat from his gruesome fate, Sothro's squad charged the invaders.

We know from the first fall of Kimaeslo Ori that the Osmite army should not be underestimated – but their strenghts comes mostly from their greater numbers and their Beakdog calvalry. Taken flat-footed in a small sized engagement, they could leverage neither.

The Osmite vanguard evaporated on contact and their main force was pushed outside of the borders of the bridgetown. They tried, of course, to reorganize into a force to reach the critical mass necessary to overcome the pearlite defenders, but each time a group formed, it was engaged and destroyed by the armored infantry of the Nation of Pearls.

It was a complete rout – the invading army throughly wiped out.

Ngom Snunngoso, warlord and niece of King Kara of Egapesor, was found among the slain invaders.

Aftermath

The cat survived the ordeal. His hind leg are broken and it is unknown if he'll jump around again, or if hunger, instinct or boredom will drive him to hunt on the western bank again. He his otherwise fed by the town – pearhaps a kind pearlite will adopt him at some point.

Maybe the town could give him a name ? Ideas welcome.

Seeking peace

The sworncaptain Uzu participated into the defensive action. His mood, improving in winter, immediately fell through the floor again. Uzu was looking for a chance to bring glory to his family through martial arts since he was 12, but it is now clear that he is not cut out for the boots he tried to fill.

Being the son of Asin, nobleman of Thomocemir, one of the companions of Islas, and one of the best swordsman of the town, Uzu is a man that is dearly loved and help was provided to try to get him out of his progressing depression.
However, he is also occupying the post of Sworncaptain – one of the most important military office.

The elite swordsmen of his squads are a critical element of both our defense strategy and internal order, and cannot be immobilized indefinitely because Uzu cannot get it together. We also do not want to abuse him into his breaking point either.

It was then decided Uzu would be relieved of his command and assigned into a therapy squad at the end of the season. Should he overcome his hurdle, he would then rejoin civilian life as a craftman – he would, of course, always be welcome in the barracks as a volonteer instructor.

We are still looking for a replacement.

Mistakes were made

It was a few days after the botched invasion attempt that the elves of Iferifiyopi decided to visit the bridgetown. The city was still unnerved, but relieved to see friendly faces at last. And so, as every spring, the craftmen bring their creations to the marketplace to be exchanged against fuel, exotic animals, pelts, or simply donated to the maintaining of good relations.

However this year, it was not to be. Among the goods offered to the Queen of Iferifiyopi, the merchant found an item made out of wood. It was pearhaps just forgotten there, and offered by mistake.

Extremely upset by their unfortunate discovery, the elves made a big scandal out of the situation and left immediately. The spring festival was cancelled. We have to make sure to be more prudent next year, as our relations with Iferifiyopi are very important for our diplomatic stability.

Urban development

A last note on this seasonal report is to be made on our urban development. Currently, we have three projects udnerways worthy of note :

• The Queen's grave has been completed to the north of the town. It will be part of a larger burial complex built around it. That mausoleum will be strictly reserved to the Kings and Queens and the most important of the heroes of the country. The genral population will still have stones carved with their names in the underground and bodies pulverized.
• The palace's architecture is almost complete and a wee bit of work on the roof needs to be executed. Aside that, we need a lot of windows to complete some of the stories and, of course, furnitures a bit later. Because large parts of the palace are still without function, we might need to decide how to organize them later.
• Work is being done to reinforce the western bank – to make it both more defensible against invaders and more accessible to merchants. Roads have been paved, buildings expended. In the long term,a set of walls similar to those on the eastern banks will allow people to live there permanently.

I like ironic names so maybe Mila for the cat?
Romanian for mercy which is something the goblin surely lacked and was doomed for.

Yes, I say let him be an instructor if he so desires, but drops the post. It could endanger others and even if he enjoys the job the burden of such leadership is surely heavy!

I'm suspecting he had some kind of negative personality change, either from combat events or something else, assuming his personality wasn't already terrible for fighting.

Still though to everything else, diplomatic faux pas aside, y'love to see it! Town's looking mighty fine.

Nicely done with the cat and the goblin. Made a good scene, despite the poor kitty getting crippled, but glad to know the cat survived.

+1

Maybe also commemorate the event with a statue related to the scene?

Mila the cat it is ! Unfortunately, I can't specify image for statues, and since Mila is not a historical figure, I can't ask the craftmen to make a decoration with him. That's okay though, he can be our unofficial mascot and our unsung hero.

As for Uzu... I believe it's genetic. His siblinghood have a history of snapping under pressure...and sometimes without pressure at all. If anything I believe constant training made him a bit more resiliant than his family, but now he's at the end of his rope. It pains me a great deal but I had to take more drastic measures than I was expecting - tragedy inbound next update.

Summer 157
Seeking compromize

For a long time now, sworncaptain Uzu gave us cause to worry with his reccurent nightmares, his occasional burst of anger, and his harassment of Lady Desli with his unterminable list of grievances he needs to air.
Kimaeslo Ori’s population, like most pearlites, are a patient bunch. At first, he was given some time off – that he would use monopolizing the Lady’s time. Then, a forced vacation to the temple seemed to improve his mood a little...

Then, last spring, the attack from Osme resumed his nightmares. Not only that, but his sister, Are, also started to show signs of instability. The two of them were members of the guard, which could not operate in any capacity as long as they were about to snap.

It was a difficult choice, but the town decided to remove them from their position and reasigned to a less stressful, non-fighting reserve squad – so they could recover while not preventing the guard squad from operating. They would keep all their earn benefits – such as Uzu’s housing in the old administration manor – and their standing would not degrade.
It was a demotion – sure – but the guard squad had a mission too important to be left inactive… To the townsmen, it felt like the compromize favored the siblings.

As they would soon find out, the feeling was not reciprocal.

The pig, the goat and the stonemason

Very soon after her demotion, Are started to act erratically – in a foul mood, she would cross the bridge east to west and back, visibly looking for conflict.

Fuming and needing to lash out, she decided to lash out against the cattle grazing in front of the bridge – the 14th of June.Despite her young age, Are was a master at arms and her temper tantrums were deadly. The girl severely wounded a sow and crippled a goat.

Now had she decided to stop here, her family would have paid for the crippled cattleheads, she would have been sent to the temple for a couple months to cool down, and things would have settled without animosity – but of course, that is not what happened.

Witnessing the scene, Arko, a master stonemason, tried to intervene. That was a bad idea – as he soon became the target of her ire. The two quickly come to fists, and during the exchange, Arko was killed.

Now a pearlite had lost his life, the situation could no longer be ignored. Arko’s widow was part of the military command squad and was crying out for blood, and as the situation happened in a crowded area in the middle of the day, there was no doubt about her culpability.

Are was quickly detained by her former colleagues.

From bad to worse

Lady Desli was devastated by the situation. In this case, there was simply no sweeping under the rug – everything happened in public, and both Arko and his widow were important citizens. Besides, the gravity of the crime was compounded by the fact Are has been a member of the swornmen – who took a formal oath to protect the people of the town.

Her hands were tied – she could not help the girl.

The new sworncaptain, a woman by the name of Godan Gililan, large, muscular woman, distant relative of the siblinghood, conducted Are’s interrogation.
The girl would not admit to anything, even under threat.

That would however not save her. Fifteen citizen formally identified her. She was judged guilty – not of murder mind you, but of beating multiple cattleheads, and sentenced to a season in jail and a severe beating.

Severe beating, of course, was an euphemism for « execution », as she was not expected to survive the punishment.

The town loses three masters

The public flogging was conducted on the very place Arko was murdered by a sworman by the name of Mapo, less than 48 hours after the murder. It was so severe that Are died long before it was finished. It was expected ; the town had no intention of letting her live.

Murderer and murdered were given stoneslab with their names to be placed in the underground memorial hall, and their bodies were destroyed soon after.

The situation could not have a happy ending – this one left nobody satisfied – but it was better than its alternatives. Letting a former sworman getting away with the murder of a civilian master would have been so brazen in its unfairness that order could no longer be maintained, and the town could no longer even pretend to uphold justice.

An exemple needed to be done, and exemple was made of Are. That turn of events, of course, cancelled her bethrowal to Princeling Sothro – and left Uzu in a state bordering open rebellion. We really do not want a blood vandetta to take place in the bridgetown.

Before the situation could degenerate even further, it was decided he would be sent to reinforce the village of Ngomzogast., which was lacking manpower. His wife left first with their two dogs to prepare their new home in that goblin trench.

Uzu, before its deployment which was a barely-desguised further demotion, spent some time in the outskirts of the town, laying motionless on the grass.

It took him a couple days to get back his wits together and to finally leave the capitale city. He would soon after arrive in Ngomzogast.

And that’s how the town managed to lose three masters in short order, without contact with the enemy.

Not gonna lie, I’m going to miss Uzu the most.

The battle for Sposmipo wetlands starts

Last year, the conquest of Histekapap hills has been completed by the army of the Kingdom. Victory on this battle was the first major blow dealt to Osmestobûb since the beggining of the war – it was the first time they suffered important defeats in defensive battles. Sure, their armies have been repelled here and there earlier, but it was the first time they would lose a whole region to a human advance.

At this time, we made no secret that our west target would be Sposmipo wetland, whose capture would allow us to occupy three sides of Thrunino salt lake. As we recevied reinforcements from the kingdom – the migration wave of the 18th of July included Ases and her husband Pabat, both veterans of Thomocemir – we decided to advance our agenda by moving troops south of Sposmipo.

Now south Sposmipo is defined by three Osmite positions : the villages of Astrogstram, Amxuespo and Ngebzoreko.

The village of Ngebzoreko is a very small hamlet which cannot provide troops to the Empire and is therefore not a priority target – the two other are more serious, with populations of 30 and 90 respectively.

The 8th of August, an assault was conducted on the village of Azstrogstram – it was conducted by the tactic squad and the heavy assault sword squad, led respectively by Histamine and Islas « Wild Sword-Saint » Candoalu. That attack, as expected, shattered the village defense forces. There’s no need to stress it, as it as been clearly established that village militias cannot even slow down a compact assault made out of swordmasters in heavy armor supported by competent tacticians.

A second army was then launched a couple days later, led by Zar Ethlaida and comprized of mostly medium infantry supported by a canine squad. They arrived in the outskirts of Astrogstram at the end of summer and asked for the surrender of the village. They entered Astrogstram the 4th of September without a clash.

Azstrogstam falls
Tho don’t let that map fool you, we’re still outnumbered 2 to 1 by Osme despite our territorial gains

Now south Sposmipo should not be a problem for a long time. We have doctrines, gear and manpower to take control of the remaining villages pretty much as soon as we want. The hard parts will be the fortress of Stustonako, where most of Osmite forces are concentrated (5000 fighters!).

The battle for Stustonako, when it happen, will likely decide the issue of the war. We might have to delay this final confrontation until we have a significant army. Light and medium infantry is fine to capture small villages, but for professionally held, hevily militarized fortresses, we’ll need a large number of elite troops.

A quick tour of the new palace

On the topic of urban development, the architecture of the water palace is done ! Still the building needs to be filled with furnitures, and some windows are still missing.

The ground floor is used to house the new sworncaptain in its eastern aisle. The central room is used as a public office for the Lady, so she can hear the complaints of the population. It is also a passageway for higher nobles into the palace proper.
The western aisle is still unoccupied. Maybe we’ll house the bookkeeper there.

The first floor is still mostly empty, but will be a leisure room for the high nobility. The two rooms are Lady Desli’s quarters and dining room, respectively.

I’ll be honest I don’t know what to do with the second floor.

The third floor is the Queen’s floor. Everything there is hers. It still needs more luxury and furnitures.

Later on, we’ll install a coffer room within the roof. Alternatively, we can use the roof as a food storage so the nobility can survive a siege on their own for a bit longer.
We’re still debating on how to improve the building, nothing is final yet.

A song for Fair Tabas

"Kafek Bilthakom, in his cynic way
Sees the tragedy in this foul fray
And pens this song with a heavy sway

The Okuvuthe, vile beast of night
With claws like knives and eyes alight
Came to Paksamspi with great might

Shebath, Obu, Bollu, and the rest
Fought bravely but were no match, confessed
Their defeat and the horror's conquest !

Fair Tabas, captured by the beast
Taken away to an unknown feast
Leaves the village in unrest

Severely wounded, Themsol lay
Left to suffer and decay
As the monster escapes with its prey"

I will keep using  ChatGPT to generate written content

An Okuvuthe, or « Moon Horror » is a large, bloated humanoid with two stubby short tails and wide, round, shining white eyes, that does indeed attack villages to capture women.

Old picture, will redesign

Such was the song that could be heard, some evening in August, when Adil and Gisep met each other to drink and sing. It was authored by a Dencothi poet, witness of the scene in a style typical of Pilalene elven music and poetry. It is said that he wrote this song, music and lyrics, about a year after the events, as a dream reminded him what the town went through.

Now the song is not particularly good, the lyrics not especially inspired, but the scene of two pearlite women singing a Dencothi song, written in a Pilalene style about an Okuvuthe’s destruction is a windows into the world of Minbazkar.

There is, indeed, deep cultural interpenetration between the people in western Tadecen – despite the wars, despite the animosity and cultural misunderstandings.

In the end, the gains far outstrip the losses, however deeply they sting the city.

Really unfortunate what happened with Arko being beaten to death thanks to intervening in a fight though, but sadly I've seen situations like that unfold before. Granted, my own incidents involved passing soldiers intervening in cases of rioting citizens mid-assault on those trying to mind their own business. Led to a lot of dead rioters. Thankfully such situations are rare.

On the positive end, good to see the campaign going favorably. Doubt the Osmites will give up the ghost even in the face of what look like crippling territorial losses, but that's a "them" problem. The manlings of Mong Kima have certainly more than proven themselves a match for the green tide, when they set their minds to it.

On the art end, I dunno why but I've been liking the pearlite weapons of late. Not so chunky and simple as to be seen as just slabs of metal, but not so big and overly detailed as to feel like a touch too much "high fantasy" for how DF generally feels. A nice "refined simplicity" kind of look going to'em, if that makes sense that just looks right.

Have you thought about a bath floor for nobility? Fountains for the waterfall pleasure and if it is shallow enough(its either 3 or 4 deep) they can actually learn to swim rather than just drown

Thankfully such situations are rare.
Yeah, morale is surprizingly good. We had problems with Iwo earlier, he was given an exile as a punishment. But now the whole clan Asin is giving us cause, and this is very unfortunate as I really like them

On the positive end, good to see the campaign going favorably.
The loss of their villages is setting them back a couple decades in their invasion project, and will severely impede their ability to replenish their forces. The conquest will take time, but until we reach fort Stustonako, we'll only meet soft targets, so expect easy victories soon !
Are is very pretty! It's a shame what happened with her... Also, the palace is looking great!
Thank you !

Alas...But you're right. And Uzu is not dead after all. We might meet him again in the future.

Yes, to my despair, we did try to make a traditional public bath in the past, but multiple blunders had us consider a safer design with just publiw ells and soap bars (just next to the palace). Working with water is extremely dangerous, and since we're above ground in a temperate region, it will freeze in winter, killing the swimmers. After losing a couple workers we just gave up the idea. It's alright though, the noblemen can still wash themselves in the public - well - showers.
Substantial efforts to improve hygiene across the board have been taken, a bit more on that next update
