The Socialist Party of Forenia forms!

In a combined response to the other political parties forming, a number of former members of the Arsotzkan government and Labor Unions of the province of Moskurg have allied together to form the Socialist Party of Forenia.  They are advocating for a large number of national programs to assist with both the lower classes of society, and the expansion of policies to deal with the unsanctioned destruction caused by the old Loyalists, chiefly through the expansion of the Riot Control Force.  Further, they promise to lower the taxation rate thanks to revenue brought in by the nationalization of properties and businesses seized from arrested Loyalists and Loyalist-backing individuals.  The relative new nature and rapid growth of the party has caused few major figures to emerge, but it is notable that the former Arstotzkan elite sniper Petyr Tavish and the former Moskurg spy known still by the codename of Kingsnake have joined the party.

Madman is a mad man because he was never invited to a party.

He has actually directly stated he's more in favor of Forenia splitting into two nations after this war is over, so if a Province Rights or Forenian Conservative party was made, he'd probably line up with it.  It is just that all current parties are leaning more towards keeping the continent together, which is against his ideology for the nation.

heh....
I'm still joking. If you can physically split the subcontinent/large island of Forenia into two similarly-sized and well-defined (Conflicts would happen faster, otherwise) pieces and separate them by, say, 100 miles of sea (Enough that you shouldn't be able to see the other except from mountaintops) then you should develop two separate nations to nullify most future conflict. Since that's not going to happen, combined government will be best until "Forenia" is the identity, not "Moskurgian", etc.

Battle Report 2: Autumn 1938

First there are a few notes to make: On the Forenian side, rocket-assisted artillery shells were not being used. The Ministry of Festive Pyrotechnics was holding on to all of them, but they have been forced to hand them over to the military. These increase the range of Forenian artillery shells but are incompatible with special warheads. Also, the Bumblebee, originally manufactured as a 3.6-inch cannon, has gone back into production as a 90mm gun. Its main purpose is still to deliver fuzed air-burst shells, while the slightly larger B2 Destroyer targets enemies which are not airborne. On the Cannalan side, armor-piercing rounds are already in use, but perhaps bear mentioning for frequently.

This turn, the Forenians started on the slow road (or possibly canal) to having a functional navy, with the UFS-DD-38 'Archer', a ship armed with four Bumblebee guns, a few crude torpedo launchers which is fast but unarmored. Two of the Bumblebees sit in turrets meant for larger guns, and all of them have their anti-air targeting systems but are hand-operated otherwise. Lightly armed and unarmed, its only meaningful advantage is that it is fast and cheap. For their revision, they have made UFS-BL-38-A 'Firecracker', a fairly advanced cluster bomb which can drop incendiaries, or little dual purpose shaped-charge-and-fragment bombs. Rather than scattering directly from the plane, they fall and then scatter at a specific altitude, covering a 50 meter square with 100 2.5kg bomblets.

Cannala has built M3T1A1 Raider, a very advanced armored personnel carrier. It is amphibious, an accomplishment aided by the use of a diesel-electric drive. It holds ten soldiers in its lightly-armored hull, and can fit a medium-armored turret with a Can Shredder, as well as an external RPG and Thumper grenade launchers which mainly serve to deploy smoke cover... and that's just in its base configuration, which is designed to be interchangeable for later weapons. However, naval landings or any rough water passages are best undertaken with the turret removed, as it is prone to capsizing. For their revision they enacted the Drunken Pirate Encryption, a slight variant on a One Time Pad system. It has a couple small steps to confuse decryption, but still ultimately relies on couriers to securely take encryption pad itself to future recipients of encoded messages. There are decoy couriers, and messages are normally sent only after all the real couriers are confirmed to have arrived safely, but this procedure limits the utility of the system to only the most important messages, and only to relatively secure locations that are limited in number as printing hundreds of one-time-pads increases the odds of one falling into enemy hands.

The Forenians begin exploiting the desert oil this turn. This makes their Model 4 Yellowjacket fighter plane cheap, and as such it will now enter service in larger numbers to supplement to better-performing HF-32. Furthermore, the HF-32 is now only Expensive when detachable fuel tanks are used.

The War This Turn:
Realizing that they will need resources, both Forenia and Cannala have begun annexing their less powerful neighbors. This has left less of their army to press the attack between them, and both have decided to push on the northern island.

The Battle at Sea
The Forenians have only just begun to fight back at sea. Their Archer destroyers are deployed en-masse, but, they are also sunk en-masse. Their use of rocket-assisted shells in the Bumblebee cannons actually let them out-range the Kalmar's howitzers, and narrow the gap between them and the Khorne significantly. However, all of that range still doesn't make killing one of these larger ships easy- the many-gunned Cannalan ships can match a small group of Archers for volume of fire, and while a Forenian 90mm Bumblebee shell might disable a turret or damage a section of armor, a Cannalan 150mm Nightstorm Longbow shell can be relied upon to disable an Archer on the first hit, or even cause the hull to spectacularly rupture all at once. Cannala's experienced admirals also have the skills to prevent the more-numberous Forenian ships from encircling them. At least for Forenia, it's actually a fight, and some Cannalan casualties occur.

Where Forenia still makes up for it is in the air- the addition of their Yellowjacket fighters in large numbers has firmly solidified Forenian air superiority. The Yellowjacket is an inferior energy fighter, but it's not incapable of catching up to Warhog bombers and Forenian pilots know techniques to lure any Cannalan pilot who gets overconfident into an outnumbered dogfight. With air superiority established, both DB-HF dive-bombers and HAFB bombers engage Cannalan ships with bombs or torpedoes, while the remaining fighters strafe and cause chaos. The Seaweed Anti-Air cruisers are a pretty good defense against the bombers, but the other aircraft are very numerous. The Dolphin torpedoes are poor against Cannalan torpedo belts, but getting hit with multiple torpedoes, plus conventional and incendiary bombs on deck is enough to disable even Khorne battleships. Overall, the Cannalans are reduced to a Major Naval Advantage as on rare occasions a Walrus is lost and their ability to harass Forenian ships is slightly mitigated.

The Battle for the Jungle:
Attacking: Both
As the northern landmass holds the most valuable resources, the armies of Forenia and Cannala are focusing their efforts here. The fighting has spilled into the western jungle, during the Autumn, which marks the start of the dry season here. Unlike in the desert, the fighting here is at close to medium range, there is ample concealment from vegetation, passage of vehicles is sometimes limited by small rivers and muddy roads (though they're not at their worst during this time of the year), and the value of aircraft and artillery alike is partially mitigated by the jungle canopy which conceals the position of soldiers from above.

Infantry combat at close range is performed with the Cannalan SSRA and Forenian AS-AR34, and the assault rifle format they both follow is very well suited to this purpose. Forenia is still making use of the Tiger armor, but it is not as much of an advantage here- in some circumstances, armored soldiers standing up are not much better off than soldiers in standard uniforms lying down in the bushes, so the Tiger armor usually stays in the back of the truck until it's time to set up camp somewhere. In between pitched battles for valuable encampments, a lot of time is spent patrolling through the jungle, and hoping not to step on a landmine or get ambushed. Encounters between patrols involve a lot of panicked firing into the bushes, a situation for which the Cannalan Quickfire Shotgun is naturally adapted. The Forenians have short-barreled shotguns available, but usually prefer to use their assault rifles in situations which might call for it. In the damp however, QFS's often jam in the helical magazine, which isn't easily cleared and forces soldiers to rely on their Mano Derecha sidearm- but at least that's reliable. The SSRA's belt feed adapter sees a lot of use here, intermediate bullets lighten a machine gunner's load when clambering through the muddle jungle trails so it's a pretty good choice, and not much disadvantage to the Sorraia. Most infantry battles are indecisive, except when the Forenian flamethrowers are brought to bear- a well-defended Cannalan position, or area where there might or might not be a Cannalan ambush for that matter, can suddenly turn into a smoke-filled hazard zone at any time.

Armored combat in the Desert favored the Forenians, and where heavy tanks are involved it still does. Most combat occurs at close to medium range, so equipped with armor piercing or HEAT ammo, both sides' cannons are very effective, but the AS-T33 still has a chance of deflecting shots when it brings its front armor to bear. Infantry can get very close to tanks, so land mines and RPGs are a considerable threat here- infantry squads sometimes even fire RPGs in pairs to defeat spaced or slat armor, or they simply target weak points since they're already close enough to have the opportunity. The real game changer here is Cannala's amphibious APC, the Raider, which is sometimes present in battles where T2 Breaker or AS-T33 tanks can't reach. It can ford river crossings and bring its autocannon and other support weapons to bear on Forenian soldiers, while protecting its passengers from Sorraia emplacements to unload them where they can outflank the enemy. With the turret removed, it can also travel by river instead of just crossing rivers, which is sometimes faster than taking the winding muddy roads. The choice of medium armor for the turret also provides a good defense against the Forenians' infantry-portable mortars. While they're not invulnerable to grenades, mines or RPGs, Raiders are cheap and plentiful enough to represent a significant advantage for Cannala.

The Forenians' new cluster incendiary bombs aren't a revolutionary idea, and in fact they're terribly similar to Cannalan Rum Barrel bombs developed earlier, but the RUm Barrels have one significant problem: They're inside bombers which keep getting shot down. The Forenians burn away large sections of jungle, causing untold environmental damage to the jungle's delicate ecosystem, and exposing Cannalan positions to more targeted anti-air fire or the shaped-charged warheads which are extremely effective against Raider convoys. The jungle makes engaging ground targets from the air difficult, but Forenia still manages many decisive attacks which help overcome the Cannalans' significant advantage in troop movement. The Forenians continue to gain ground as they watch the jungle burn. [Cannala 2/4, Forenia 2/4]

The Western Mountain Island:
Attacking: Cannala
El Presidente has invoked the Pirate Code to challenge Captain Redbeard for the right to "exploit, extort, and rob" the people of Redbeard's Isle- the fact that Captain Redbeard has openly declared this to be an exclusive right of himself and his subordinates is about the extent of the government there. By mid-may a group of special marines appointed by El Presidente himself has successfully raided Redbeard's rather antiquated ship for his capture and imprisonment. Cannalan forces are now engaged in the rather difficult task of kicking out all the rabble before establishing any real industrial operations. [Cannala 1/2]

The Eastern Tundra Island:
Forenia has decided to annex the Tundra island, which is a remote and small English colony. After getting approval in parliament, the issue was passed to the Ministry of Ethics, which decided that, yes, it is ethical to annex smaller countries if you really need their resources. The small hunter population there made a surprisingly good defense, attacking Forenians where they came ashore to build a new harbor, and protecting the existing harbor with some old cannons and shore-launched torpedoes. After a couple months, though, Forenian blockades have prevented them from being resupplied and shelled the harbor town into submission, and Forenia has made a foothold there. [Forenia 1/2]

The Outside World:

The European policy of appeasement continues, as the German annexation of Austria is legitimized and the Italian control of Ethiopia is officially recognized. France appoints a strongly pro-appeasement foreign minister. The Spanish Civil War rages on. Outside of the the growing European tensions, the first President of Ireland is elected, and in America, Action Comics #1 is released, the first appearance of Superman.

Research Assistance:
An American university has expressed interest in a foreign exchange program, as some very forward-thinking technological ideas have emerged from Cannala and Forenia. However, they refuse to work with an illegitimate, belligerent government- and both countries have some concerns in this area. Cannala aggressively conquered the Juraki Shogunate, and United Forenia resulted from a violent rebellion forcing two nations into one, which some citizens clearly dispute. Write the best explanation as to why your government has a legitimate right to rule, and your rival does not, and you will receive one Research Credit. Post it in your Embassy Thread.

As seen in the report, the DD is not valuable without other ships, which is why I'm going to push again for the CV.

The Archer does what it's supposed to; it challenges the Cannalan navy and floats.  We couldn't possibly ask for more.  It can be retrofitted with better torps and cannons later.  For now, we need a foothold in the thing that will render their fleet obsolete; CV's.
