Minor nitpick, but our jet uses two engines placed beneath it's wings.

No. The older Tunderbird jet had 2. The newer Lightning Streak has 1.

Spoiler: Progress #2 (click to show/hide)

Looking better, but still not finished.  Considering how well the haast looks with simple flat cells, I'm kinda regretting not doing the whole poster that way.  Might make another variant with simple flats, depending on how tedious finishing this turns out to be.

I completely forgot that thing existed.

I hope to write the turn or at least a good portion of it today, if I have the time. I'd like everyone to get their last propaganda submissions in soon.

Spoiler: Progress #3 (click to show/hide)

This is pretty much finished.  The Bjorn needs to get cleaned up, and then the Tiger armor needs to get simplified to look like the rest of the image, but other than that it should be presentable for the propaganda contest.

EDIT:
Spoiler: Progress #4 (click to show/hide)

Welp, this is about as much as I'm gonna get done tonight.  I might fiddle with it some more later, but I'm gonna go ahead and submit this for our propaganda contest.  Do I need to do anything special to submit it, or does this count as it is?

Battle Report 19: Winter 1942

lol so the turn's a bit late eh
Imma be honest it's still going to be an irregular schedule from here on

Also no more stalemates
You guys ain't waiting a month just to see stalemates. One side must gain ground, if both are attacking on the same front.

New Equipment:

This turn, the Forenians have designed the UF-MBT-42 'Bjorn', a tank with Heavy armor and a Very Heavy front glacis. The armor is made of an improved Manganese alloy and the tank is designed to include ERA. The tank is very wide and flat, with armor at an extreme angle, making it resilient but difficult for the crew to move about in. It also boasts a powerful 100mm L/55 cannon and other small features such as a smoke grenade launcher shameless copying the Cannalans. For their revision they've built the APS-42 "Reality Check", an 'Active Protective System' which mounts Forenia's existing flares (originally used for infantry visibility) on the outside of aircraft. One module contains 25 flares on 5 separate triggers, so that each time the device is triggered it fires 5 flares in succession. In theory this should distract Cannala's heat-seeking missiles, but it's untested as Forenia doesn't have Cannalan seekers to test it with. It's somewhat bulky and un-aerodynamic, which is a small concern for bombers but a larger one for fighters.

Cannala has spent the season designing and perfecting the M1942 Proximity Fuze, Radio Detection, which can be used in artillery shells 3 inches or larger and, of course, MAGIC Missiles. This allows a munition to detonate upon coming within a certain distance of a solid object which reflects radio waves, so that artillery shells can detonate above the ground or missiles can detonate near aircraft. The distance is configurable from 2-10 yards.

The Forenian Army currently has the following equipment, not including legacy equipment which can be found near the OP:

The War This Turn:
This season, Forenia is attacking on North Cannala and Titan, while Cannala is attempting to push into Tereshkova in the north and regain their ground in the West Forenian jungle.

The Battle at Sea
General Tereshkova leads a wing fighters to the coast of Cannala- behind them, the bombers and transports that make up Forenia's most valuable force. Opposing Cannalan fighters are coming from straight ahead. Tereshkova orders her wingmen to stay back, wait until the Cannalans launch their seeking missiles and says, "watch this." It's a maneuver she's done before: She pushes her plane to full throttle and causes multiple missiles to divert. Then when they get close, she doubles back and the missiles streak off into empty sky. Except this time, two missiles explode in mid-air. The rumors that Cannala had developed proximity fuzes were true, and sooner than anyone had imagined. Tereshkova's wing watches in horror as her plane sputters smoke and spirals down, the controls locked. A parachute emerges, and several planes are detached to make sure the Cannalans don't shoot her on the way down.

Cannala's new Proximity Fuze is first used in combat at sea. Its use in missiles is the most greatly anticipated- pilots record a high number of bomber kills with the Hellfire and MAGIC MK I. While the new Forenian flares often divert missiles away from their targets, the proximity fuze can be configured to detonate the missile a good distance away and still do serious damage to an aircraft with its large warhead. This can reliably kill large craft or damage them enough to prevent them from reaching their destination, except for the notoriously durable Reckless Effect. A few fighter kills are recorded as well, but even with the proximity fuze the missiles lack the maneuverability to reliable chase fighters. Overall while the proximity fuze might have granted Cannala's missiles an extremely high kill rate, the Forenian flares mean that multiple missiles are still typically expended per target.

However, where the proximity fuze really shines is in AAA use. Cannala employs a large number of cannons and even some dedicated ships to firing at Forenian aircraft, which are responsible for a large number of ship losses. However, even a high volume of fire has always been an unreliable means of stopping enemy aircraft. Now, it's possible for massed fire to effectively screen aircraft out from an area. Forenia's Haast is durable and well suited to the role, but wings of fighters like this can no longer reliably get close enough to ships to destroy them with bombs and cannons if they're protected by craft like the Seaweed AAA Cruiser.

Forenia continues to have some advantages- their fighters are more effective than Cannala's, and they can put out a lot of cannon fire with their Vodka battlecruisers, which are cheaper than Cannala's Victoria. But the leadership of General Cortez and the tactical advantage of sea mines and small torpedo boats means that Cannala is taking back the seas.

Cannala has an advantage at sea.

The Battle for North Cannala

Attacking: Forenia

Forenia's new battle tank, the Bjorn, is first deployed here. The open hilly fields play are an excellent environment for the low-profile tank, which can peek over hilltops while exposing a very small silhouette, and maneuver at full speed. Its full-length 100mm gun is effective against the Bull tank, and its armor can often stop Daybreaker rounds- in particular, the first impacts HEAT rounds are defeated by the ERA and any impacts by APDS are defeated by the extreme slope of the armor. There are some downsides, the cannon takes much longer to load than the Daybreaker thanks to the tank's internal layout and the wide, flat top armor with its exhaust vents is vulnerable to artillery and presents an easy target to aircraft if there are no Forenian fighters close at hand. Overall, the Bjorn is enough to push armored combat in Forenia's favor.

However, the more pressing issue is that Forenia's navy and air transport craft have both had a big bite taken out of them at sea. Forenians landing on Cannala are simply outnumbered.

Forenia fails to take ground on Cannala.

The Battle for the Tereshkova Jungle
Attacking: Cannala
The wet season begins.

With the Forenian attempt at taking North Cannala failed, Cannala gaining land on Tereshkova is all but inevitable. There are other contributing factors as well though: Cannala's naval advantage is back, and their proximity fuzes have weakened Forenia's bomber attacks and air transport (which they rely on very heavily here) as well as improving the effectiveness of their artillery against soft targets in general. The Bjorn tank also struggles to maneuver in the mud of the jungle wet season, and its wide profile adds difficulty with clearing roads and crossing bridges, reducing its effectiveness which had been so remarkable on open ground.

Cannala gains ground! [Cannala 1/4, Forenia 3/4] Forenia will lose access to the ore here!

The Battle for Titan:

Attacking: Forenia

Forenia puts up much more of a fight here. Like in Cannala, the wide-open spaces favor their Bjorn tank. Their infantry armor and better sniper rifles are significant advantages as well, although troops bemoan the fact that even after all these years optical scopes are too expensive to be standard issue. Both sides put up a similar amount of naval bombardment -Forenia's cheap Vodka ship are matched by Victoria ships with proximity fuzes and better crews- and Cannala does have some numbers advantage. Cannalan soldiers make little use of their night vision, the open spaces on Titan give few places to hide and aren't hard to illuminate with ordinary light, and the winter nights on Titan are so cold as to risk casualties in any case. However, as foul weather fills the skies and ice moves in the harbor, Forenia finds an unexpected advantage: Many turbine aircraft are forced to stay grounded, allowing their piston engined Reckless Effect transports to deploy vehicles and soldiers, while both sides struggle with landing ships. Combined with the significant advantage of armor and infantry combat, Forenia makes a foothold on the frozen wastes.

Forenia gains ground! [Cannala 3/4, Forenia 1/4]

The Battle for the Forenian Jungle

Attacking: Cannala

The terrain in West Forenia is similar to that of West Tereshkova, with thick jungles. Cannala's small boats are also useful in the rivers here, and they make good use of their night vision. Forenia's ERA-equipped APCs are still a significant advantage. However, with reduced bombing capability, Forenia can't hold Cannalan forces at bay.

Cannala takes a foothold once again. [Cannala 1/2, Forenia 1/2]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

German submarine attacks are sinking allied military and merchant ships at an alarming rate. Mahatma Gandhi is arrested by British imperial forces after demanding independence for India. Plutonium is first isolated, in the Metallurgy Lab at the University of Chicago. Luxembourg is formally annexed by Germany. The Jewish Lachwa Ghetto, in occupied Poland, starts an uprising against the German police and soldiers controlling it. Most of the residents are killed, but a few hundred escape. A Japanese floatplane drops incendiary bombs on Mt. Emily, on the coast of Oregon in an attempt to start a forest fire. This is the first attack on the continental United States of the war.

Local Events:
The Secret Police have issued a report: It is believed that Vlanlados still has a secret cell of spies who are stealing resources from Forenia. Vlanlados has aided Arstotzkan rebels in the past. However, their intelligence says that the Arstotzkan rebels are inactive. Be on the lookout, one of your neighbors could still be a spy!

In Cannala, the secret police report that whatever spies were active in Cannala have been stopped or gone into hiding. What resources do go missing are probably just regular corruption clerical oversight.

The UFAF-SHB-42 "Hammer of Forenia" Is designed by Joseph Izz Stalling, an ace Arstotzkan pilot of Forenia and part time designer who is also the same guy who designed the Ice giant, only this time he probably downed 10 vodka's before designing this titan of a bomber. The gargantuan bomber has a grand total of 8 large turbojet engines on its massive wings that are air and water cooled with self sealing tanks with four on each wing, the engines are designed to be able to be used as at high of an altitude as possible along as being made for as long range as they could with a lot of fuel in the self sealing tanks, it has this many engines as well so to have a max payload of around about 20 tonnes. It is armed with 2 turrets, both armed with 4 20mm autocannons with one on the tail and one on the nose. The whole cabin is pressurized and the bombardier is in a compartment just above the bomb bay that is connected with the main cabin and has bombing sights for aiming, naturally, there are oxygen masks in case of a breach by enemy fire. The design is also has its structure armored a bit as to increase survivability, with critical parts of the frame made out of manganese steel. The large retractable landing gear are located in the wings and near the nose and are quite large to support the aircraft. The aircraft also has two loudspeaker systems in addition to the radio in the front, one labeled "For ordering the crew around" that is mostly to tell the bombardier they are near the target. And the other labeled "Taunt" which is just attached to a loudspeaker that is outside the aircraft, mostly for moral reasons. There are also five small compartments near the nose and one near the tail for snacks and maybe a pistol if any of the aircrew wants to take one, just in case the aircraft somehow starts going down, there is an ejection system in place to save the crew. Along with all of this, there is a large integrated flare system in the aircraft that in theory should be easy to retrofit with new flare designs as we make them, just in case the Cann's manage to fly high enough to strike at the bomber. There is also a cargo and civilian version of the design next to the military version, but the civilian version wasn't taken here for discussion and instead was given to GloryStar Airlines.

UF-RJ-42 'Fair Fight Module'
The Fair Fight is a purpose built radio jammer coming in a broad range of sizes. The smallest size is made up of an umbrella shaped antenna, a box about the same size as our tiger's roar radio and, a separate battery pack shamelessly stolen from the said radio. The box has a number of options which include(but not limited too), three tuners to adjust the frequency of the jamming effect, a power modulator to adjust the strength of the signal, a pulse adjuster to change the timing of the pulses and, a 5 setting on/off switch able to set the jammer to one of the three setting or randomly swap between them. The system can be scaled up almost infinitely by increasing the size of the antenna size and power source. The module can be easily mounted just about anywhere on our ships, planes and, vehicles to protect them from proximity fuzes. The main options envisioned are mounting on the tail fin, nose, belly of planes(depending on size, only the tail for fighters all three for the ice giant etc...) and also mounting on the top of vehicles.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that we need to take out their over-laden missile aircraft before they get into range. We need an airborne radar to alert our bombers to incoming threats and to dispatch fighters to intercept.

That would help, but discussion on discord did reveal that we can in fact jam their proximity fuses to render them non-functional. The flares work at preventing direct hits, but don't forget that their AAA is tearing us up our bombers at sea as well. The jammer works against those too; it forces them to score direct hits, and turns near-misses into just that, misses.

Actually, the jammer, if sized up appropriately, we be capable of prematurely detonating these munitions. If it's got enough range, they'll detonate them as soon as the projectiles arm (i.e., right after being fired). Using proximity detonation will be a hazard, not a benefit for them.
