It's a terrible plan but it's better than the alternatives, especially the alternative that has us becoming communists in order to join the Soviets.

Special Fighting Unit: Paper Tigers (Official Designation: SFU-PT-44)

Desperate times call for desperate measures. If we cannot defeat the enemy in a head on battle, our only choice is to weaken it sowing confusion in its midst. Inpired by the planned operation Grief that our German allies have shared with us and aided by Spanish native speakers from South and Central America, we will aim to pass small teams of paratrooped soldiers as Cannalans in order to sow confussion among our enemy´s ranks.

The main bulk of our forces will be comprised of Cannalan looking mercenaries, recruited from South America and given a through understanding of sailing, rum, pirate speak, copyright infringement and other such trivia about Cannalan culture. They will be supervised by officers with a strong Cannalan heritage, good Spanish speaking skills and family at home to be supervised by the secret. They too, will be given an intensive curse into Cannalan culture.

We will paratroop our men behing enemy lines in small teams, where they will use either captured Cannalan equipment or modified Forenian one to look Cannalan, as well as suitable uniforms, vehicles and forged documents. They should capture and destroy objectives to delay the advance of the enemy, taking advantage of surprise to take out Cannalan patrols. Looting of enemy corpses shall be encouraged to capture more accurate equipment and improve mercenary morale. Hopefully, even if the objetives aren´t achieved, the increased paranoia should break down enemy morale and bog down any offensives.

Incentives should be offered to the mercenaries for completing objectives and obeying their oficer, so as they don´t wander off the mission in a looting rage. When the misión is over, the small team can just surrender to the Forenian side to escape enemy territory. Subtle markings and mannerisms should be used to avoid friendly fire.

What if we join the Russians, but make our own brand of Communism? It seems pretty popular.  We could do something like...

"Forenianism"
It's basically a type of communism that relies heavily on capitalistic incentives and personal freedoms, supporting a liberal democracy with well-armed citizens.

You know, basically communism with a few minor details switched around.

I'm sure they'd love to get their first jet engine from us rather than the UK

Battle Report 27: Winter 1944

A side game! I always wanted to do spinoffs focused on smaller events in this setting. Belatedly, the first is the Exodus from Vlanlados. The citizens of Vlanlados have decided they're through with being conquered and they have taken a ship to permanently colonize Antarctica for themselves. Wish them luck.

New Equipment:

The Forenians have decided to make a move on the naval front with the UFN-ASM-44 "Saltseeker". The Saltseeker is an anti-ship missile, with active radar guidance. The guidance system itself is bigger than a Balefire missile, but since the Saltseeker is a huge missile designed to hit huge, slow targets this isn't much of a problem. It has an enormous half-ton shaped charge warhead, and it's propelled to extreme ranges by a jet turbine. Rather than homing in on the vertical axis, it simply controls its altitude based on an altimeter, flying close to sea level when the target is near. For their revision the Forenians have sought to counter to Chupacabra with a dedicated anti-air weapon, the UF-SPAAS-44 "Sewing Machine". Based on an Artemis chassis, the Sewing Machine mounts four 30mm Velociraptor autocannons, like those in the VVF fighter, on a hydraulically-controlled mount. It comes with an expensive and ineffective radar tracking system on a second truck, which is fortunately optional. Manually aimed, the Sewing Machine should be a threat to low-and-slow air targets like helicopters.

Cannala has decided to hit the Forenians where their greatest advantage lies, in the air, with their new M1933 'Javelin' Air Superiority Fighter (A-6F). The Javelin is a missile-oriented fighter, it's very fast (albeit not quite as fast as the insane hydrazine-burning VVF) and large. It carries eight missiles, and it's fast, albeit not quite as fast as the ridiculous VVF. It's not very maneuverable but it's designed to engage at long range using its missiles, and use its speed to control fights. It also has cannons as a backup weapon. On the downside, it's Very Expensive, and in addition to its poor turning and high minimum speed, it suffers catastrophic engine failure if the afterburners are used too long, limiting its actual speed in combat. To better arm the javelin, the MAGIC Mk. 3B Balefire Violet revision upgrades Balefire missiles with a UV sensor. The reasoning is that the sun and possibly decoy flares are large UV emitters, whereas aircraft engines are not, and the aircraft hull itself actually casts a UV "shadow". By rejecting targets with a strong UV signature and looking for a lack of UV, the missile should be less prone to mistakes.

The Cannalans have lost access to the ore on West Tereshkova again- with the sabotage to their transports last turn, it's almost like they never had it at all. The Bull and Victoria are now Very Expensive. The Santos aircraft carrier becomes Expensive. For legacy equipment, the Kalmar, Seaweed, Armadillo, and Man'O'War bomber become Expensive. The Warhog bomber becomes Very Expensive. Furthermore, the Chupacabra will now be expensive, despite the fortuitous circumstances last turn which allowed it to be cheap.

The Forenian Army currently has the following equipment, not including legacy equipment which can be found near the OP:

The War This Turn:
This season, Forenia is assaulting Vlanlados, while Cannala attacks on Tereshkova, trying to retake their section of jungle. Both sides will be making a push on Forenia itself as well, after the delay to scramble for resources last turn.

The Battle at Sea
"Now you'll see, we have created the superior jet fighter! I stand ready to accept your surrender, Ms. Tereshkova." Cortez watched over the con tower and awaited a response. Two full squads of Javelin jets streaked overhead, and in his thoughts to himself, he lamented that his own ship lacked a weapon which could truly hunt down and destroy aircraft, leaving the job to pilots. After a moment one of his men spoke up. "Sir?" "Yes?" "May I have permission to speak freely?" "I don't see why not. Go ahead." "Have you ever read Moby Dick, sir?" "Yes. Ungodly boring book. Didn't think much of it. What was it you wanted then?" "Never mind, sir." The Javelins engaged the Forenians a considerable distance away from the fleet. Only a couple returned, in defeat. By all reports Tereshkova had dodged every missile sent her way, which was at least twenty missiles.

In practice, this isn't quite as surprising as it sounds. The Javelin is considerably under-performing with the afterburner problems present in the design currently. The afterburners are rarely used even in combat, which limits their ability to out-position the enemy. The ability to fire several missiles at a single target is excellent, but the performance of the missiles isn't quite as good as predicted. The UV-sensitive missiles never lock onto the sun, but they're only a partial improvement against flares. The flares must not emit as much UV as Cannalan engineers had predicted. It could be the case that it only notices the lack of a shadow from the flares, which are physically smaller than an airplane. The flares are still fairly effective if they are deployed while the missile is a good distance off. On the other hand, the sheer number of missiles a Javelin can deploy improves the odds of a Forenian pilot simply failing to notice a missile and not deploying countermeasures. The Javelin has improved Cannala's standing in the air, but because of its expense and bugs, not enough to really change the air situation.

Still having an advantage in the air, the Forenians have turned their eyes to sea surface combat itself with their Saltseeker anti-ship missiles. The Saltseeker has an absolutely enormous warhead: When it hits, it makes its presence felt. Depending on where exactly it hits, one hit might sink a Santos or Seaweed, and has a good chance of crippling a Victoria. The shaped charge can make a hole yards wide and no armor can prevent it from obliterating a magazine or fuel bunker if a ship is unlucky enough to take a hit there. The hit rate is pretty good, around 50%, with the most common cause of failure to hit being inaccuracy of the altimeter- sometimes the missile will fly over its target or dash itself against the waves. With its incredible range, it can hit well before guns ever can. The far extreme of its range isn't used extremely often though, the ships which fire the missiles cannot see that far on radar and airborne radar is uncommon enough for Forenia that it usually isn't available for naval fire support.

The Forenians have found enough deck space for the missiles by shoving aside torpedo launchers and AA guns, but the majority of the missile compliment is kept aboard Vodka battlecruisers. These large ships were deemed the first priority for getting the best weapons, and the missiles are expensive enough that not every Cataphract can be loaded up with missiles.

The Cannalans have attempted to defend against the missiles, with mixed success, by intercepting them with aircraft. The Saltseeker missiles don't show up easily on radar because they fly at a very low altitude compared to most aircraft, but if a Spearhead pilot is lucky enough to be in the air near the missile and spot it it's possible for him to intercept and destroy it using guns or a Balefire. The Balefires in particular are noted to have a good hit rate, since the Saltseeker missiles fly in a straight line and have no countermeasures. Nonetheless, the missiles are a huge problem for Cannala's navy, which has relied heavily on guns as their main source of firepower and lacks long-range missiles are highly effective aircraft-delivered weapons for destroying ships.

Forenia has an advantage at sea

The Battle for Vlanlados
Attacking: Forenia

Compared to the last time there was fighting here, the biggest change is that Cannala's Chupacabra helicopters are more expensive, and Forenia has begun deploying their first dedicated anti-air vehicles, the truck-mounted UF-SPAAS-44's, or "Sewing Machines" as some of the soldiers have already taken to calling them. The Sewing Machine's longshot-derived radar aiming system is almost never used after initial live combat trials. It's largely derided as an ineffective, overpriced piece of trash by those who've used it. Hopes of using the Sewing Machine to accurately target fixed-wing aircraft are pretty much dashed, although it has considerable firepower it's an enormous challenge to aim manually, and rather slow on its mounts at that. Where it does find some practical use is in defending against the Chupacabra helicopters. The slow, heavy AA piece does a decent job of fighting slow, helicopters. The 30mm cannons will tear even the fearsome armored Chupacabra to shreds quickly, and the general clunkiness of the SPAAS-44 is a relatively minor obstacle to lining up hits on the Chupacabras which have difficulty changing direction in a hurry and fly low. The only real downside in this regard to the Sewing Machine is that it's pretty much dedicated to fighting one enemy vehicle, the Chupacabra. The guns can be turned towards ground targets in a pinch, but while their firepower is considerable, Forenians vastly prefer to use armored vehicles. The Sewing Machine is highly vulnerably compared to an APC or the like, with the gunner being exposed in his seat and no armor over the mechanical apparatus.

The Chupacabra is still an excellent weapon, but the twin effects of its higher cost this season and the Forenians having a weapon which can defend against it mean that it doesn't totally tip the scales in Cannala's favor. Forenians are still vulnerable when their Sewing Machines are destroyed or just not present but on top of that they also have superiority in the air situation. With their Bjorn tanks on the ground, and Artemis missiles for support, they manage to successfully invade Vlanlados.

Forenia invades Vlanlados. [Cannala 0/1, Forenia 1/1]

The Battle for the Tereshkova Jungle
Attacking: Cannala

This season is the first time the Chupacabra finds use in the jungle, and it is an ideal weapon. Tree cover has always been a factor which limits air support in the jungle and the ability to stay in an area and shoot makes attacking ground targets much easier than streaking past and firing at a narrow opportunity where a clearing appears. It can even land to resupply at opportune locations without an airstrip, often leading Cannalan infantry to remark that they'd love to have a Chupacabra variant which can carry them around, like the Twinblade but less of a dangerous liability. Cannala's night vision is also still in use here, which is very well suited to the environment as has been discussed previously. The Sewing Machine AA finds plenty of use here, but the jungle still limits mobility even for an amphibious vehicle like the Artemis truck it's based on. The Chupacabras see a lot of losses to ground fire and enemy aircraft, but still make a meaningful contribution.

On the other hand, Forenia has some long-standing advantages too, their air superiority allows them to deploy infantry and Salamander APCs alike by air, in addition to their highly effective Firecracker bombs, and they use their flame weapons to clear enemy infantry out on the ground (notably Cannala does have a flamethrower-armed Raider APC, but it's garbage in comparison). The Javelins, and their many missiles, do cut into Forenia's air transports a little bit despite their so-so hit rate.

It's a narrow thing, but a key Cannalan night raid determines the end of the fighting here. Salsi "Matafores" Emils ordered his gunner to wear night vision goggles, which was extremely clunky but allowed him to destroy key Forenian defensive positions from the air which were illuminated by men below, while the Sewing Machines in the area struggled to target his 'ptero in the dark.

Cannala advances. [Cannala 4/4, Forenia 0/4] Cannala will gain access to the ore here if they hold it for another turn.

The Battle for the Forenian Mountains
Attacking: Both

"Don't shoot just yet." An experienced Arstotzkan sniper placed his hand on the back of his Moskurg apprentice, continued, "you need to wait until he gets closer. There's too much wind in that valley to guarantee a hit from here." The pair sat on a high ridge, overlooking the mountains and valleys for miles and miles around. The apprentice was lying flat on the ground, with his enormous Horsekiller Mk II gripped tight in hand. "Watch and wait. We've hiked for three days to get here, you need the best possible shot." Through the scope, he watched a Chupacabra fly a couple hundred feet below him. The apprentice spoke now. "He's going to get around the ridge!" As the 'ptero drew nearer, it also was closer to being obscured from sight. "Calm down! Breath. One more moment..." At the last possible opportunity, the Moskurg fired at the pilot's canopy. Then, the helicopter went around the ridge. After a few moments, and with great satisfaction, he heard a distant crash, and smoke rose from behind the ridge.

In practice, Cannala's Chupacabras are still a really big deal here. They're expensive, yes, but the extreme terrain limits access for Forenia's Sewing Machine AA guns, and killing them with Horsekillers is still a challenge. Additionally, while they're not very maneuverable as helicopters go, the degree to which the helicopter format is suited to mountain terrain cannot be overstated. In short order the 'pteros begin wreaking havoc on Forenia's more remove encampments which have only infantry-carried weapons for defense, and sometimes their artillery positions as well, although any place which is accessible to an Artemis launcher is equally accessible to a Sewing Machine so these are often reasonably well-defended. Chupacabras see losses to Haasts as well, like in other theaters, though the terrain favors them enough to make up for the difference in numbers. Nevertheless, the value provided by Cannala's 'pteros is so great as to cause Cannala's air support to have a greater effect on the ground fighting than that of Forenia, despite Forenia's general air advantage and superior pilots.

Other than the introduction of Cannala's Chupacabra, and Forenia's Sewing Machine to counter it, nothing has changed since the last battle here which resulted in a Forenian victory. Forenia still has the considerable advantage of better rifle scopes, and the most mobile artillery for small mountain roads, the small Sarukh rocket launcher. Cannala's infantry rocket launchers are still good performers as well.

Once again, it's very close, but Forenia manages to win, however barely, by the good graces of their advantage in long-range infantry combat. At the same time, it's clear that had the Chupacabras been any more prominent than they were, what with being Expensive and suffering losses from Forenia's new AA guns, the Cannalans would have overrun them.

Forenia advances into the jungle. [Cannala 1/2, Forenia 1/2]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

In Japan, Hideki Tojo resigns as Prime Minister, after numerous setbacks in the war effort. In Germany, Adolf Hitler survives an assassination attempt, in which a number of high-ranking Weremacht officers conspired to kill him with a bomb in his conference room so that they might surrender and make peace with the Allies as early as possible. The bombing caused minor injuries to Hitler himself and killed several people in the room, and thousands were arrested and executed in the wake of the failed assassination. With the direct sponsorship of the Soviets, the Polish Committee of National Liberation is formed in the areas of Poland which the Soviets had retaken from Nazi Germany, in direct opposition to the native Polish government-in-exile, with the goal of bringing communism to Poland. There is an uprising in Warsaw, which results in the massacre of many thousands of Polish civilians, and the Soviets are accused of strategically neglecting to aid the Polish militants so as to allow them to be defeated by the Germans, leaving Poland open to Soviet occupation: . IBM creates the first program-controlled calculator, the Harvard Mark 1, which is the size of several refrigerators and included electromechanical computing components with punch card readers and automatic typewriters. Operation Pluto, an undersea oil pipeline from England to France, is completed. After an uprising in Paris, allied forces arrive to liberate the city. The German general in charge, Dietrich von Choltitz, surrenders Paris to the Allies against Hitler's orders to destroy as much of the city as possible. The Allies recognize Charles de Gaulle and his cabinet as the provisional government of France. Continuing the Allies' momentum in Western Europe, British forces liberate Antwerp. Finland breaks off relations with Germany, and a correspondent urges Forenia to follow their example and end the 'alliance of convenience'. The Finns proceed to sign an armistice with Soviet Russia, ending the Continuation War.

Local Events:
In Forenia, a large public funeral has been held for Artyom Onegin- known to many as "Fuck Cannala Guy", he could often be seen on the front line in his customized Tiger Armor fighting with a pair of MC16A's. Despite some experts claiming his combat style was "unfeasible", "careless", or even "insane" he claimed over 20 confirmed kills in numerous battles in the Tereshkova jungle, starting from the initial conquest of the island. His funeral was delayed because of the difficulty in enacting his last wishes "to be blown up in a huge rocket, killing some Cannalan bastards if possible." After PAROI fought for funding for the project, a Saltseeker anti-ship missile with extra space for his body was constructed and fired at the Cannalan Santos-class carrier, CNS Planes in a Bottle, which was successfully hit and sunk. The event was recorded on film and played at the funeral, and a statue of Artyom in his armor was unveiled in Asyem-Two, his home. In political news, the Forenian Parliament has come to a landmark arrangement after months of debate, several minister deaths, and unsanctioned riots. With support from nearly everyone outside the still-sizeable NFPP, the Forenian Parliament has agreed to denounce the Nazi regime based on news of the holocaust and concentration camps. This decision was reached after Germany refused visits from Forenian investigators to confirm or deny the outrageous claims which have been made by Allied nations. Between photographs sent by allied diplomats, and the Germans' refusal to accept an investigation, Parliament has been forced to conclude that the allegations are true. This means that newspapers may soon be free to choose their own typeface. In the stead of the Axis alliance, Forenia has dire need of a new ally to support the war effort. A controversial Arstotzkan-led initiative has passed to form an alliance with Soviet Russia. Stalin has said that he welcomes the friendship of Forenia, and demands no immediate changes to the Forenian government, but expects that when the war is finished they will "show their support for global communism." Despite the great concern expressed over this by many citizens, Arstotzkan party support has surged, allowing a bill to pass in parliament which grants clemency to accused Arstotzkan rebels.

In Cannala, a sizeable cottage industry of "imported" Forenian goods has grown. Though generally considered inferior, a variety of Forenian-made liquor, tools, vehicles, weapons and more can be purchased in specialty shops. It's quite a profitable business despite the import taxes, thanks to the extremely low cost of acquiring the items. In the House of Brothers, three prominent members of the Morality Party have been murdered, all found in their rooms having been beheaded. Each one has had a calling-card left in Japanese, a note on old parchment which reads "this is the work of the red mask". All of these people were vocally pushing anti-Juraki laws, so the motivation seems obvious, and the newspapers are having a field day. The remaining members of the Morality Party have been less than subtle in implying that the pro-Juraki Brothers are responsible in some way, having either enabled or directly supported the murders. New Brother TheFantasticMrFox, after his meteoric rise as head of the new TORCH party, has been one of the main targets of these allegations. "The old president was murdered by Juraki," says MP Brother Valente Cruz, "and the new supports Juraki, and endorses this new Brother who supports Juraki. Coincidence?" Nonetheless TORCH has gone ahead and forwarded a bill guaranteeing equal civic services to Juraki population areas, which failed to pass in the wake of the high-profile murders. On the other hand, the party successfully passes a bill increasing the punishment for any government inspectors, customs officers, or police officers found to break the law or neglect their duty in exchange for bribes, and promising to form an organization for investigating corruption within six months.
