As for me, i first saw it on the Temple of the Roguelike, i think it was one of the early 3d versions

Heroes of Newerth forum.  SOmeone was complaining about how HoN has a really steep learning curve (lol...) and someone else replied with the image about DF's learning curve and it turned into a discussion about how hard DF is to learn.

Old high school aquaintence started meeting up with my neighbor and I for DnD and mentioned it a few times. I was incredulous. "Wait, a game where you play dwarves, kill elves, flood the world in magma and unleash hideous monsters from the deep? And its free?"

I didn't play it for several months, always figuring it probably sucked or was just a little flash game. Boy, was I wrong.

The Blockland forums. Someone made a topic about it and talked about the steep learning curve, accidently flooding a fortress with magma, etc. The topic was advertizing 40d at the time. I've always wondered, what was it like way back when like when Boatmurdered was recorded and even farther back around 2D?

FIRST I heard of it was on a demo disc for a local gaming mag (think that was somewhere around late 2007, can't remember which version). I immediately lost patience and dropped it, but a couple years later I was looking in the Cortex Command forums and noticed the link to here. Got hooked this time :P

A friend recommended it about the time the 3D version was getting stabilized.
I played it off an on, until I took an interest in modding... then I was hooked.

Somewhere around the time 40d got released, I heard about it on the age of chivalry forums (a forum about the medievil total conversion mod for hl2)

A while ago, on the PC Gaming website Rock, Paper, Shotgun. They really love Dwarf Fortress there.
