Short answer: Not very dangerous, and you shouldn't need any escorts unless you've already managed to piss off another player.

You can see every fight that's ever occurred anywhere in the galaxy in the past ~2000 turns through the Corporate -> Battles menu. Pretty much everywhere is safe. Fights between players almost never happen (aside from the ongoing grudge between Protodrone and BlackStar), and hostile NPCs are usually quickly put down by players. However, you shouldn't assume that this will always be the case. The dev will put in larger NPC entities in the near future, and the relative lack of PvP probably has something to do with many players being crammed together in the Sol system and no one wanting to risk sparking a larger war. Guilds are trying to claim frontier systems for themselves, so that's probably where the PvP will become heated.

Having said all that, intercepting a moving target is difficult. Movement occurs before combat, so if someone were trying to attack your freighter, they'd have to know which tile your ship will be at, move their forces there and issue orders before hand. If their forces aren't faster than your freighter, that would be their only chance to attack until your freighter arrives at its destination. Considering how expensive ships are to maintain, you're probably better off leaving your freighters unescorted, and defending just the endpoints of its route and other important facilities. Unless you think another player is trying to wipe you out, in which case defend everything and make strong friends.

Edit: Related to my previous post and probably not worth double posting: Someone actually is selling a few level 1 freighters via public contract, although he's asking for $2 mil each (they cost $1 mil to build).

I've built a freighter and am working on a second. Because of the absurd population of Earth's cities, selling raw resources mined on Mercury is proving pretty profitable.

There are a few very powerful players in the Sol system who are keeping it safe.  Due to the geoboosters, Sol is also the most profitable system right now.  I suspect there will either be a crash, or other systems will start getting built up.  Due to the logistics slot max, it's pretty hard for one corp to keep a city going by themselves.  The problem is there aren't even enough players to keep the cities in Sol going at the size they are at without artificial boosters.  If there are more players that join things may start getting more interesting.

I have to ask: are there two Bay12 corps? If so, why? If not, which one is real?

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

the fact that Sol has turned into basically coruscant and could implode at any moment if not maintained is pretty awesome.

Pretty sure there is only one B12 guild.  If you haven't been sent an invite to Underhome Extraction just let me know.

I have not. Aywanez Incorporated (naturally.)

I was going to ask about Honorary Dwarves, but it turned out that "digging deep and greedily" is not a DF thing, it's a LotR thing. I guess it's just a (pretty minor) coincidence.
Also, "strike the Eath!" would have been a cool slogan for the 12 seconds it would take ARK to attack us.

It'll probably be fine, Ark only really fucks with people if the people in question start shit on Earth first.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

That was the joke- they take their Earth very seriously.

Invites have been sent.  To even know you got them you need to go to guilds under corporate.

Hm, so I've just got done with the tutorial. Any advice and where I should be investing in next? I've got some basic minerals quarries and one exotic chemical quarry and one exotic minerals quarry.

If you get some precious minerals, you can make exotic ceramics by combining precious minerals, exotic chemicals, and exotic minerals. The demand for exotic ceramics is pretty high in Beijing and probably other cities too, at least for now. You could probably make a killer profit if you get in on the market before it crashes.

Here is a reference spreadsheet that indicates the amount of raw materials needed to make one unit of anything else.
