Did we not get enough assent for switching to Natalie's then?

We have never gotten a royal topaz vanguard cannon.
The topaz kettlegun revision said "The kettlegun and the Vanguard can now be fitted as topaz variants."
The vanguard cannon description does not have "--->  Lucky improvements allow higher energy projectiles from topaz weapons crystals to be channeled without loss of operation efficacy."
Have we just gotten unlucky or is vanguard missing from the topaz role table?

Unlucky, it's on there and reachable.

Alright. What about the Natalie skiffs? we did vote to produce Natalie skiffs this turn, so there shouldn't be nearly that much topaz stuff available.

Right. Hum.

That was my mistake. I was completely aware of the change and did that anyway. One moment...

Quote from: Plan: One last damn turn of biding our time before unleashing an unstoppable wave of fury upon Three Captains
The marines at Three Captains continue to fall back and continue to make Wreth's marine's lives hell with prepared bait and strike. We promise that reinforcements are coming soon.

The skiff at Three Captains tries its best to sneak away and return to Kasgyre.

Mercury and 4 skiffs escorting it return to Kasgyre.

Buy 1 royal topaz trim web pair (1c 1o 3w)

Train 3 comm officers (1 squad 1c 1o)

Finish Anguis:
-7 kettleguns (7c 7o)
-1 topaz trim web pair
-1 normal trim web pair (1c 1o 3w)
-1 comm officer

Finish Ophidian:
-2 kettleguns (2c 2o)

Christen the transport hull as Artemis and equip it:
-Small core (6c)
-VS topaz lift
-Trim crystal pair (1c)
-1 ream of webbing
The Artemis will climb a bit slowly because of her discount lift crystal, but she's cheap.

Give our brand new Natalie skiff a comm officer.
Give one regular skiff a comm officer. (Give it to the survivor from Three Captains if possible)

Mercury squads 1 and 2:
Give everyone who doesn't already have a vest an aethersilk vest (-24 vests)
Give everyone in squad 1 a prototype grenade (I don't think we've used our prototype grenades yet)
Give everyone in squad 2 a grenade (1c 1o)

Create 2 new squads.
Sniper squad:
16 witch hunters (8o 8w)
4 aethersilk vests

Royal heavy squad:
16 bronze armours (10o)
16 aethersilk vests (16s)
4 topaz gauntlets
4 crossbows (2o 2c)
12 aether gauntlets (3c 3o)
2 topaz grenades per person

We still have 4 aethersilk vests in storage.

Costs:
23/26 crystal
36/36 ore
8/93 wood
16/24 silk

It's time to vote up some mad science, remember Draig says he'll match the top voted project versus the top voted enemy project in the event.

Quote from: Thoughts on the future of warfare and the rise of the flintlock
The difficulty with aether cannons is that they can be counteracted by the use of shrouds. All things being equal, an aether cannon of improved strength that can more quickly defeat the shrouds of today, shall be met with shrouds of improved strength that can absorb aether shot with the same efficiency as the aether cannon of the present. As both rely on crystal to empower them, it is likely that any improvement in the crystals of one, will transfer over to help improve the crystals of the other. It may still be possible to win a war on the back of such improvements, but it will never represent a lasting solution to the base problem.
By comparison, we have the flintlock. The flintlock design still has room for improvement, but the key advantage lies in allowing the shroud and shroud based defenses to be bypassed entirely. A cannon variant of the flintlock shall break our enemies airships to flinders. Even what crude armour they deploy, shall no doubt serve to slow their craft and interfere with its ability to maneuver. A slow heavily protected craft can be worn down from long range without ever allowing it to close.

Truly the future of offensive warfare will be the flintlock and greater weapons based upon the same principles. With aether cannons obsoleted due to their need to breach the shroud, we shall have a surplus of them in need of another purpose. At the same time these flintlock cannons shall need higher quality metals to improve their reliability in withstanding the forces unleashed.

The Aether Forge
Encasing the ore in a metal vat shall allow it to be heated by striking the walls with aether weapons. Care might need to be taken that the vat walls are sturdy enough to contain the force of the blow as well as resist the high temperatures needed to melt the chosen ores. No doubt some metal can be identified with an unusually high melting point. The valuable metal may thus be separated from the impurities of the ore.
Furthermore, the similarities with this process and crystal production will allow for many experiments with the creation of aether metals that interact with aether much as aethersilk and crystals do.

To begin, I must recap my previously made observations on the nature of force inversion as a phenomenon of Charged crystalline structure as traditionally created in Vats, colloquially referred to as “Lift, or Trim Crystals” The latter, while in functionality very distinctly defined, containing rather little mechanical difference to its counterpart. The nature of this “Lifting” phenomenon is quite obviously not an intrinsic properties of the crystal (as when uncharged it is inert) but rather caused by an interaction of the atheric energy within, facilitated by the unique structure of the crystal. The lifting effect therefore, is not bound by the constraints of the crystal, but rather the interaction is limited by the end of a structure suitable to facilitate it. This simple principle will be the basis of the different theoretical designs described hereafter in this documentation.

Hyper static alignment in Crystalline Gel for artificial structural expansion of seeded crystal:

A viscous substance such with an extremely high density of crystal, likely ground from waste crystal or “Crystal slag” produced during the incubation period of crystal growth is would exhibit extremely interesting properties. Each crystalline particulate should be capable of channeling aetheric energy in minute amounts. A charged particle will create an attraction with a nearby uncharged particle, forming chains along which aetheric energy can travel. The malleable nature of the gel allows for the particulates to arrange themselves freely in a conformation conducive to aetheric current over time. In an uncovered vat of C-gel, applying a charge will result in the formation of aetheric pathways over the course of several minutes. A curious side effect of this is gel expansion. With the substrate that composes the majority of the mass in the gel taking on a more structured nature, they become less densely packed. The gel can be seen to rise under a charge in a visually stunning display. Performing the same experiment under pressure finds that the particulate chains are forced to find more efficient pathways, but tend to take longer to do so as they cycle from expansion to collapse multiple times as they try to organize and are overwhelmed by external pressure.
The next step in the experiment is applying the charge indirectly. Instead of applying the charge to the bottom of the gel, a small core crystal is placed (or seeded) at the bottom of the tank, and the charge is applied to the crystal. The result is phenomenal. With the energy already acting in established patterns, it will attempt to maintain these patterns as the central core crystal cannot be restructured. The result is the artificial expansion of the core crystal by the alignment of the particulate in the surrounding gel. To preserve pre-seeded structure, the gel must be kept under pressure. Failure to do so will result in ambiguity in structure as any ambient energy in the air can be used as an exit point for the atheric charge.
The ultimate design of such would be a pressurized metal tank filled with this gel and seeded with a crystal.  Theoretically, this would allow for artificial expansion of crystals to orders of magnitude beyond our current capabilities when under charge.

I think one of our mad science designs should be the attempted taming and weaponizing of surface monsters. Difficult to get more mad science than that.
Helmacon - 10/20/2017
hrmm... Aether madness is a thing at altitude that makes people go unconscious, right? We could compose a sort of "crown" of interacting aether crystals that subdues the beast to make it manageable. Basically, induced aether madness. Playing with fire, sure, but it might actually work.

Aetherproof Iron:

We've been quite good at avoiding that problem actually, as most people are willing to abandon their own idea or accept critique on it, in exchange for having the best turn possible.

Also, as I understand it, we are presenting three mad science designs, so I think we can vote for multiple mad science designs each.

Quote from: Mad Science
Aetherproof Iron
It is a universally recognised truth that Iron does not survive in the presence of Aether. Something of the internal structure of iron reacts with aetheric energy, much in the same way potassium reacts violently when placed in water. Iron can be protected from aether with a sheath of copper, much in the same way potassium is protected by a coating of wax, but why does iron react this way and copper does not? Why does iron react this way and tin does not? What makes iron different?

It is my belief that there is some property unique to iron that causes this affect. Our forefathers have already created a solution to our dilemma however. Whilst Copper and Tin are both weak for military and industrial purposes, Bronze, an alloy of the two, is stronger than the sum of it's parts. Other alloys also produce properties that are improved based on their ingredients. With the appropriate ratio of iron to other materials it should be possible to produce a superior quality metal than is resistant to the effects of aether and other corrosive agents.
