Three Captains

The report from the Three Captains airspace is not good, but it is a report. Of the four skiffs sent, only the scout survives, which is expected. The Wreth force initially defending the Three Captains is limited to the large vessel that survived the last fight and a pair of skiffs on lookout. Had the other Kasgyrite vessels not been there to engage, and die, the scout would surely have been spotted while getting into position- but the Wrethan lookouts appear to disengage after spotting the enemy in order to join the fray, providing the window of opportunity to get into a watchful position.

After the three combat skiffs are eviscerated by the Wrethan forced, the Scout sits and waits, recording and running silent.

Some time later, the second Wrethan force arrives, six ships strong. Three skiffs, slightly different from their usual model, and (more importantly) three transports. The transports dock and unload marines, remaining outside the spire with their new escorts.

Final count, 1 superskiff, 2 skiffs, 3 new model skiffs, 3 transports.

Inside the Spire
Numbers threaten to suffocate the Kasgyrite marines. Though traps are laid of every sort, every opportunity is taken to snipe from darkness before the enemy can react, and the cavern terrain is exploited and remodeled wherever possible, the only way to survive is to lose ground. It's a terror campaign, to strike the Wreth dogs and make them bleed and whine, to make them fear the tunnels, but there's simply no way that the Kasgyrite officers can see to turn this into a victory.

Counts vary, but there's between six and eight squads of Wrethan infantry, armed with a mix of crossbows and gauntlets. Forward groups appear to be utilizing a different type of crossbow, not automatic, but still lever operated and with slightly better range. Still not a patch on the Witch Hunter, but it's something to not. Worse are the cannons. Much worse. There's four of them now, distributed so that two are always advancing while two keep watch on the flanks.

Making raids on their camps when they stop is as suicidal as making raids on their convoy when their moving, thanks to even more of the portable barricades they used before.

The officer on the ground has high praise for his men, but unless he's reinforced, he sees no path to win this fight. He doesn't have the men or the firepower to do anything but pull back and keep the enemy scared.

Confirmed Kills: At least three quarters of an enemy squad.
Losses: Three Skyskiffs

Kasgyre has lost ground at Three Captains

Blackstone

Spire Blackstone is mercifully quiet, allowing the Mercury to pick up additional soldiers and move on without any issue.

Spire Kasgyre

The Ophidian is repaired at Spire Kasgyre, and refitted to a higher standard than before. Her lower deck forward guns are upgraded and merged to a Vanguard mounting, and the new cannon is installed.

The Anguis is likewise pulled out of the mothballs and refitted for service once more, receiving her upgraded core and partial armaments.

Two additional skiffs are constructed and stand ready for service at Spire Kasgyre.

Event: The Late Savant

During recent renovations to a manor once owned by one of the greatest scientific minds in Kasgyre's history, a secret vault was uncovered by craftsmen. Such a chamber had been rumored to exist, as the scientist was known to be rather... unstable, despite their prodigious intellect and unparalleled ability- but such rumors had never been substantiated before now. Within the chamber were private laboratories, half-finished designs, and stacks upon stacks of notes detailing secret and ambitious designs.

Secret and ambitious military designs.

Careful collations of such notes reveal that, although their paranoia and internal demons likely prevented them realizing their vision, the scientist was on the cusp of several major breakthroughs. Despite the age of the documents, there may be much to gain from a careful analysis of the late savant's notes...

Rules:
For this event you'll be creating up to three (3) designs. Each design is one of the Scientist's unfinished inventions, and thus is made from a pre-war state of mind. This is not to say that such designs cannot intrinsically utilize more advanced technology than existed in his/her day, (think of some of Nikola Tesla's more... theoretical design ideas) but you can make no mention of specific technology invented after the start of the game. The designs you put forward may be highly theoretical in nature, and you should not feel limited by the scope of the start of game technology. This challenge is about imagination, creativity, and fluff. Your three designs will be paired off in order against the three designs from the opposing nation, and in each pairing I will decide which is the 'better' theoretical mad-science design*. For each pairing you 'win' you get an extra die to spend next turn. The team that wins the majority also gets the ability to roll a prototype at advantage.

This is a competition about science, not politics. Phrases such as 'For the glory of [BLANK]' or 'Shall be the bane of the [BLANK] scum' are not allowed. Your designs should be about the science of the design, and mentioning the enemy empire, your own empire, or any combination thereof, is frowned upon heavily.

1. You may create up to 3 designs for this Event.
2. These designs may make no reference to technologies created after the war.
3. These designs should be as divorced from politics as possible- science, not propaganda.
4. Designs will be judged based on a superior 'mad-science' quotient.
5. Each 'win' nets a team an extra die.
6. The team with the majority of 'wins' gains the ability to roll a prototype at advantage.

*The product should be notionally possible and well described, not just insane cool sounding blithering.

It is the beginning of the year 366 AR.

Spire Kasgyre's production stands at,
13(+10)/y Crystal, 26/115 Banked
17/y Ore, 36/85 banked
19/y Wood, 93/95 banked
10/y Silk, 24/50 banked

It is now the design and project maintenance phase. You have 5 dice to spend.

I made this table whislt bored at work to compare costs and powers of the various crystals, based off of NAVs numbers.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And that was a surprisingly painless turn. Hats off to the commanding officer at Three Captains for preserving his entire force.

EDIT: Draig, we're still listed as holding 4/4 at TC. Is this correct?

Depending on Draig's answer, we have 2/3 turns to get ourselves ready to break the blockade at TC and unload enough soldiers to at least stall their advance.

My personal vote it's to hold off on all non critical designs and spend all our resources on amassing an invasion force and fleet.

EDIT2: Thaddeus is also still present as a project.

The Anguis should have 4 topaz trim webs, not 2. At least according to your current notation where 1 trim web = 1 trim crystal.

According to your previous notation where 1 trim web = 2 trim crystals it should have 2 trim webs.

We had a trim web in storage and bought another this turn.

Edit: Also the tech/tactics/infrastructure spoilers are at least a turn behind.

Ironwood

This is a wood specially grown with great care to be as strong and resistant to fire as possible. They selected from the hardiest trees we have with the best properties, then they are slowly and carefully grown in pressurized chambers with very high temperatures deep within the spires. The result is a nearly black wood strong enough that hulls made of it count as armour in their own right. Structural damage will be lessened and fires will spread much less aggressively and be easier to control.

(We currently cannot use wood as fast as we make it, so better more expensive wood is a practically zero cost upgrade. It lessens the lethality of their incendiary cannon, and reduces the vulnerability of our ship’s unarmoured backsides. )
(One likely flaw is making trim webs and vanguard mounts cost more wood to refit, which would require a revision to fix. Or we just pay the extra wood)
(Decided to throw in a bit of Lamarkian evolution as fluff. Could switch it to more realistic breeding and careful controlled growing if that's too unrealistic.)

Shroud cart

A stout and sturdy wooden cart designed to hold a core crystal. Either a very small or a small core crystal depending on our needs and budget. The core crystal's one purpose it to produce a shroud large enough to protect a squad and strong enough to deflect a number of cannon shots or a lot of gauntlet fire. This should let our marines charge close enough to throw grenades and disable their cannons.

It has a thick wooden shield with a viewing slit in front to protect a few people pushing or hiding behind the cart from crossbow bolts and shrapnel.

The cart is lined with silk to power the crystal.

The core crystal currently only produces a shroud, but could be used to power a lift crystal or weapon in the future. Due to not having to power any other crystals the shroud might be stronger than a core crystal powering other crystals.

(Would be even better as a topaz shroud cart.)

Turn should be fixed up now. My apologies, it seems I pulled your tech from the last combat, not the last phase.

Edit: Now it's fixed, maybe?

EDIT 2:

...[Nice semi-table of crystal stuff]...

In general, that looks really good. I want to amend one section though.

Trim speed:
Trim pair: 1
Trim web: 1ish
T trim pair: 2
T trim web: 2ish

Trim acceleration:
Trim pair: 1
T trim pair: 2
Trim web: 2.1ish
T trim web: 4.2ish

Webs have no advantage in speed, only acceleration. It's the same crystal weight, just spread out so it doesn't break itself when straining under maneuvers.

Quote from: Late Savant design: Aether Pulse Generator
It is well known even by our own engineers that distortions and corruptions in the matrices of crystals can cause odd and typically disastrous side effects, but no one on our team has as good an understanding as the late professor. In this paper he stipulates that like the shroud generating patterns used in our crystals, a similar pattern emits an aetheric field that causes certain other patterns to vibrate. The exact frequencies and proofs are written in a form of shorthand that we still have no idea how to decipher. The immediate use as a communications device is obvious, but the professor had something better in mind.

By  creating a fractal matrix in this pattern, and then passing a very specific electric current through, this can supposedly create a pulse of aetheric wave energy that will cause violent and self destructing vibrations in all nearby crystals. The effects this could have would be mind-boggling, and would fit his criteria of "ending the waste of life that is 'war with a hostile nation' in the most expedient of ways".

I hope that is suitable mad science.

I'm definitely liking the Ironwood design.

Quote from: mad science (ship power systems design)
A treatise on aetheric interactions with Iron and oxygen atoms.
The speed and nature of rusting that occurs when iron is exposed to aether is beyond any kind of rusting caused by any other source. My examinations and understanding of the rusting process in low aetheric environments tells me there is an upper limit to the speed at which the process can occur. Iron atoms need to be exposed to oxygen atoms in order to chemically bond with them and form iron oxide and as they do the iron atoms are pulled out of the material exposing more iron atoms beneath. However aetheric rusting happens at far faster speeds and gives no time for iron to be exposed to oxygen atoms. Since the oxygen atoms of rust can’t come from nowhere this suggests that aetheric energy causes oxygen atoms to permeate iron objects. There are several factors to consider here first is that iron and other metals possess a crystalline structure much in the same way as everything else that interacts with aetheric energy. The second is that oxygen and air may have more role in aetheric energy dynamics than people believe. In the open sky aetheric energy and oxygen are abundant with a few curious exceptions. The red skies of the calm between us and the belt spires is a prominent example. Yet the higher the altitude the greater the quantity of aetheric energy and the lower the concentration of oxygen.

My hypothesis is thus; Oxygen can carry aether and aether heavy oxygen can be moved by forces that would move aether. The source of aether is high and it seeps down carried through the atmosphere. Iron and ferrous metals are capable of acting as aether crystals but aether bearing oxygen molecules are pulled into the structure of the metal whenever they encounter aetheric energy causing rapid rusting and a destabilizing of its internal structure. However my calculations state that that would cause the iron to rust far faster than even what we see this suggests that aetheric energy transfers may be inhibited in some small way by the presence of a large amount iron oxide. This would help also explain the Calm and it's red snow. I have several experiments intended to test these hypotheses;

First is to take a carefully forged piece of iron with the same shape and structure as a core crystal and place it inside a pressure vessel with the iron core connected to strands of aether silk. All air is pumped out of the pressure vessel and aetheric energy is sent to the iron core via the aethersilk as it’s held in a vacuum. If I am correct it will not rust and should be able to act as an aether crystal.

The second experiment involves oxygen and involves setting up two pressure vessels one pressure vessel has a crystal that emits aetheric energy into the environment around it and the other pressure vessel is lined with aether collecting aethersilk. Oxygen is pumped into the first tank and compressed, it is then left to sit for several days before being pumped into the collector tank. The amount of energy gathered is measured. Once that’s done the experiment is repeated except this time aetheric energy is released into the first tank. At the end of the experiment I should have some solid numbers on how much energy oxygen can hold if any.

For the third experiment I intend to set up an aetherslik collector and a core crystal and then apply large quantities of iron oxide to different components of the setup and measure the changes this causes before cleaning the rust off and applying it elsewhere. I should be able to detect and changes or dips in output.

(Note: need new rust experiment, it’s possible that due to being made out oxygen and an iron both of which I suspect conduct aether very well rust might be conducting aetheric energy through itself at higher than normal speeds but because the iron oxide is almost never a continuous object rust causes a scattering effect on aetheric energy passed through it. This may be the reason the calm is the way it is as aetheric energy is moved through it much faster than the surrounding skies where there is less rust but aetheric energy hangs around long enough to be gathered) Final experiment I will alter the setup of the earlier rust experiment by replacing the aethersilk with tubes packed with iron oxide dust. I will attempt to pass aetheric energy through to see the results.

If all of these experiments turn out how I imagine they will then I will have revolutionised aetheric energy for all time! Iron cores would be used when crystal is expensive, energy would be stored in gas tanks mimicking the ones I plan to experiment with and rust tubes could replace all aethersilk connections possibly even at a higher transport rate. But I have to be careful. I don’t want people to steal my work again. I think I’m being followed whenever I leave my house. They’re careful but I still notice them. They know full well that I’m one of the best minds around and want to be able to get a peek at what I’m working on so they can take credit. I need to be careful.

Quote from: Dedicated Core Crystals
A core crystal has three main responsibilities: power conversion, shroud generation and energy storage. Three very different tasks that need very specific crystal formations. Every time an enterprising designer tries to enhance one of these abilities, the other two suffer commensurately. Developing a crystal that is simply better in all three aspects will be expensive and time-consuming. This project instead focuses on creating dedicated power crystals, shroud crystals and storage crystals by enhancing different core crystals each in a different area, trusting that the shortfall will be covered by another dedicated crystal of a different type. This project should synergise well with our medium core crystal, which is simply three synchronised small core crystals. Instead of each of the three adequately managing at all three tasks, we can have one that excels at each.

Quote from: Naval Boot Camp
As larger and more numerous ships clash, it has become evident that our standard doctrine of ships loosely working together as a collective is not enough. No longer will we our ships act like a herd of cats, vaguely adhering to a collective cause. Instead, every member of our fleet, from the Grand Admiral to the lowest deckhand, will be put through a boot camp ensuring a degree of basic competency, an understanding of all tasks required of them, and a loyal adherence to the Chain of Command. Competence awards recognition and promotion. Negligence attracts the heavy hand of military law.

I am voting for shroud cart because we need something to counter their field cannons. We also desperately need something to counter their flaming spitball cannon but the ground war is a higher priority right now.
