Ah, I see (derp). That theory seems sensible(can just think of two dwarves encountering each other in a corridor with one side being set to high traffic), much like the one where setting normal pathfinding value to 1 causes it to work faster.

Are you sure that was actually a river and not a brook?  Brooks can be walked upon.

Yes, definitely a river. There was no walkable surface above the water. However, the water wasn't always full, allowing dwarves and visitors to path through it.
