Do I need to fulfill my needs? (Newbie Question)
« on: August 13, 2017, 09:13:34 am »

Hi, guys!

I've just downloaded Dwarf Fortress yesterday and decided to start with Adventurer Mode, and I gotta admit, I'm really having a lot of fun so far. I love how there's so much to do in the world; my characters a Polar Bear Man who is a total badass so far, and I'm not all that afraid to admit I cheated a little with DFHack to maximize enjoyment (yay for Candy Great Axes!) So yeah, I'm having a blast with the game.

That said, I just noticed my character's "needs". Being a goody two-shoes IRL, I made him have a desire to help people, but even after I helped some quests, it didn't decrease. This made me worry a bit, so I gotta ask: does your needs impact you in Adventure Mode?

I remember reading that low needs in Dorf Mode makes your Dorfs unable to do much, but I'm not so certain if they're there in Adventure Mode to either encourage role-playing by penalizing your combat statistics or just there for no reason. I still want to be a good guy, but I don't want my character be distracted enough that it debilitates their ability to fight.

Any input would help this Fire Emblem fan and Dorf Fortress newbie immensely. Thank you!

If your total needs ratio doesn't dip into Distracted then you aren't taking any penalties. If you're cheating (a little?) straight out the gate, then you don't need a guide, just maximally enjoy yourself.

On the flip side of things, an adventurer will also gain not-insignificant bonuses when they've most or all of their needs fulfilled.

It's like a 50% or higher accuracy bonus in combat and similar boost to skill checks I think?

You can zero out all of the needs if you try, and then you can get a few which can be handled while avoid shit like family/romance/good food/constantly needing to acquire new blingy shit/needing to argue which sucks when your skill is so high you autoconvince everyone/so forth.

I usually go make merry/tradition/artwork/eloquence/strongly religious and then end up acquiring a booze need. Tell a short poem, say hi to your god, chug some rum, bam, Focused! again.

I generally try to not artificially change my character's needs, but usually I avoid things like "Make romance" and "Help somebody" which currently cannot be satisfied in Adventure Mode.

Wiki claims you can "Reunite family members" to satisfy the "helping somebody" need.

Was anyone gotten that to work this version? I've never found prisoners in the locations they're supposed to be, and others have had the same complaint on discord chat. Escorting citizens to safety from an army invasion and clearing raiders should do it.

I have reunited prisoners with family members in this version, but I just stumbled across them in the spire/pit when I was trying to intercept a war party. (And I didn't have the help need.)

I haven't because [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED] is the most annoying shit ever and should be changed to ACCEPTABLE. With it as required it ends up with kids getting shanked, bards turning taverns into murderfests, libraries full of scholars biting each other to death.

Well, yeah, the two I rescued did go hostile to their families, but that is all technically after the reunion. I could still tell the story of how I reunited them.
