Bio: The third son of the respected (though not noble) Jaegerschenck family, Matthias was discovered to be magically gifted from a young age, and when he turned eight he was sent across the border to Ilim to study at one of their magical colleges. He did his best to keep in contact with his family through letters, but hiding his national heritage meant he rarely got to send or receive them, making him an almost total stranger to his siblings as they all grew up apart.

He excelled in his classes for several years, finding a particular kinship with the elemental anima magics, until he reached the age of recruitment. He was itching to return home and join the army, as all good Astrasians did, but he ended up getting held up for several years to finish his courses (one of which was Performance magic. He isn't any good at it but he turned out to be an excellent dancer regardless). He's looking forward to seeing his family again.

Bio:
The Fardoragh family is one of the oldest Astrasian noble families, and they are proud of their long lineage. A part of that pride comes from the fact that in every generation, they have at least one representative in the Astrasian military, and often those representatives rise to high positions of command and honor, showing that truely their family is one of the greatest noble families. Their loyalty to their country is well known, having never had a rebellion on their lands, and often times sending their personal troops to help squash rebellions when they arise in nearby areas.

But tragedy struck this generation of Fardoraghs. The oldest child was born a son, expected to be the next in line of commanders to take over the ruling of the house after a long and prestigeous military career. After John came Espe, Reina, Christine, and finally Alana. The oldest three girls were quickly pledged to various other noble families to strengthen the political ties, while Alana's future was kept uncertain for the time being, as her father, Richard, wished to see how the political climates would change. But a year before he was to enter the military, John was crippled in a hunting accident with his closest friends, including one who was being considered as Alana's future fiance.

With no more sons to carry on their legacy and the older three daughters already pledged to sons that were set to rule their houses, not join the army ranks, there was only one option left, so far as Alana's parents could see. She must marry a man who would enter the military as soon as she reached the eligible age. However, Alana argued that this would not truely uphold their legacy as no man she married would truly become a Fardoragh. Instead, she insisted that she be trained to join the military so that she could uphold the tradition. Her mother and brother objected, claiming that it was not fit for a young lady to do so, but she insisted and her father backed her up. Her mother tried to persuade her to at least join as a healer or something on the back lines, but she refused. If she was to do this, she was going to do it right and fight for her country and her family's pride, until she could join the ranks of generals and commanders that were her family's legacy.

Bio:
Mydis was born to an Astrasian peasant family as the last of four children and second of two daughters. She was not planned or wanted - but she was lucky enough to be adopted (before much else happened) by a blacksmith and his wife, who had no children of their own. She found herself luckier still seven years later, when her birth family was entirely exterminated. By choice or by accident, their village had been on the losing side of a rebellion.

There is little else of note to her. Her adoptive family raised her well, and taught her of combat and of loyalty to emperor and country, encouraging to join the military when the time came. Her biological relatives did tend to be magically gifted, but she has had little training in that vein, so cannot harness any potential she does have in an manner suitable for offensive combat.

As a person, she is often unfortunately a bit odd and a little overfriendly, but a decent sort otherwise.

Bio:
Selkie is a young Astrasian woman who hopes to rise in the ranks and earn her family prestige and funds. Coming from a small village in the countryside of Astrasia, Selkie’s childhood was largely uneventful. Her father was a merchant, and as with many in the class a failed soldier, a fact which he was bitter over - it wasn’t his fault that he had a lame leg. His work as a smith of finer weapons than the standard fair did mean that his family got by, well enough. Her mother just helped in the shop, largely.

Once, in a drunken daze, Selkie’s father sent her and her sister for testing in military matters - they liked to train the Emperor’s best young, after all. Sara, Selkie’s sister, failed as expected, as she had no real training in anything. Selkie on the other hand… she had an unexpected aptitude for light magic - and joined for training immediately.

The aptitude persisted, and after about four years she’s become a regular battle-mage of the army. Most of her pay goes back home if it’s not part of what’s used for requisitions.

Selkie’s never really been a normal girl, anyway, even before the aptitude was discovered. Under a sunny disposition is something of a cold and calculating mind, and beyond that perhaps one a bit too accepting of the orders she’s given by her bosses. But hey - if you find a job you enjoy you’ll never work a day in your life, as the saying goes.

Bio: Leon was born the third son of minor nobility, to a family with ambitions a mile long and the drive to grow. Most of the Hessel household was involved in the military for the purpose of advancing their status, and having a reasonable amount of funds at their disposition also meant that most of them either rode into battle, wore well-crafted armor, or both. And while the family estate's stables did hold good horses, their pride and joy were its wyverns. Breeding huge flying lizards might not seem too impressive at first, but the fact wyverns require more dedication and resources to maintain than more traditional mounts made the family the sole supplier of scaled beasts in their area as well as gave them bragging rights about their financial situation.

Leon grew up in a fairly demanding environment amidst several brothers and sisters who were being primed for military service, much like he was. Unfortunately for him, he was one of the runts of the litter, the other being his older sister Lea, who still beat his height by two thumbs. While his siblings—Lea aside—were tall and well-built, Leon quickly noticed during puberty that no growth spurt would close the gap and he'd have to accept his average height and build. That would've been easier hadn't it been for the fact he was expected to display same level of physical excellence as his stronger brothers and sisters. He got tired of hearing "try harder" and "if you try hard enough you can do it". He had some trouble dealing with wyverns thanks in part to the size of the beasts the family had been breeding over a few generations and the fact all the good riding tack sets were made for people bigger than him.

Lea was the one to find a solution for her and her younger brother's problems. She visited a different region, sent a letter home calling for Leon and after a few months he and Lea arrived home with a pair of pegasus in tow. The winged horses were docile, agile and well-suited to Leon's fighting style, something he hoped would be appreciated by his family. Instead it triggered a fair measure of teasing, harassing and general bothersome behavior on the part of his brothers and sisters. Instead of stopping the vulgar bullying, Leon's father thought it could help correct what he considered errant behavior within his children. While Lea was the second oldest sibling and took the opportunity to leave the estate and join up with the crown's forces, Leon had to stay for longer.

So Leon was bound to his stay in his family's state withstanding constant bullying until he could finish his training... Or at least that'd have been the case hadn't he one day decked one of his younger (and bigger) brothers in the chin when they decided to make fun of the runt of the litter. From that moment on, Leon had finally had enough and his aggressive combat style seemed to jump into his manners towards his siblings, to the point he was shipped off to join the kingdom's forces in short order. His family's displeasure was clear, as the suit of armor that'd traditionally have been commissioned for him was absent and he had to make do with standard-issue army material. Leon has cooled down after spending some time away from the rest of his family, but he can still get snappy and his fighting style speaks volumes of how much frustration he has to unleash.
