I was gonna suggest looking up Google Fiber but last I recall, their coverage is very small compared to the major ISPs so it's entirely based on where you live.

The fact that the major telecoms abuse exclusivity agreements and grease up politicians to prevent new rivals in the service provider space does not help things.  There are actually quite a few smaller ISPs that would *LOVE* to provide fiber to people's houses, but are legally barred from even so much as digging a hole with a shovel.

(For a candid, inside view of how ISPs in the US operate, just look at the hissy fit they are throwing in California right now, over a proposal to limit their ability to secretly collect and sell use information from their customers.)
