This is indeed a thing, and is currently $6.79 until the twentieth.  I don't blame you for being skeptical as hell of what this might be given how prior games with similar concepts flood early access on Steam that promise bloody everything, but here's an interesting thing to note about this particular one.  This isn't an Early Access game.  It is a full release of the game, so all the stuff it promises is actually in there.

Here's a gameplay vid someone did, if you prefer that form of getting the information.

And here's a rip of the steam page description, for those who want to glance over it without diving into Steam, because I can't think of anything else to put here:

Quote
Voxel Turf is a block based city builder/action adventure game. Build cities or destroy them. Start businesses or rob them. Nurture your citizens or subjugate them. Build a real estate empire, or perhaps just drive around and blow stuff up. Its your choice! Voxel Turf allows you to be the force of benevolence or the agent of chaos in a city of your creation.

- Have you ever played an open world game and thought "if only I could build something here?"
- Or a city builder and wanted to drive around and interact with your creation?
- Or even a building game and thought "if only these buildings would come to life?"
If so then Voxel Turf is the game for you!

Live in a City of Your Own Creation
- Build sprawling cities with either the over 50 prebuilt buildings, or build your own in-game!
- Make amazing structures with over 15,000 types of blocks in over 100 categories.
- Or live in and modify a procedurally generated city

Get Rich or Die Trying
- Earn cash from either completing missions, crime, or managing a real estate empire.
- Establish protection rackets to make money
Some of the missions revolve around:
- Being a hired revolutionary who fights the local authorities for cash
- Participating in street races for money
- Making a career though stealing vehicles for profit
- Eliminating bandits and protecting civilians from bandit attacks
- Be a specialist architect who draws an income from making custom buildings

Unleash Chaos
- Destroy and vandalise areas with explosives, weapons and tanks.
- Ride a wide range of vehicles including cars, a tank, helicopters and even a rideable shopping trolley!

Enjoy Multiplayer
- Multiplayer over LAN or Internet
- Most missions can be done in Co-Op
- Cooperate with friends to build a city, or compete and undercut each other

Fight For Territory
- Explore and raid bandit bases for loot
- Fight Turf Wars against other factions and players to gain control over parts of the city
- Build bases and defend your territory from attack
- Engage in diplomacy with other factions in order to gain power or undermine others

Unleash Creativity
- The entire world is block based, so you can create and destroy everything.
- Decorate blocks with paint and decals
- Various non-cube construction blocks, including ramps, stairs, steps, allowing you to build things like pitched roofs and ultimately more realistic looking buildings.
- Build intricate contraptions using switches, mechanisms and circuits
- Custom player-built buildings can be saved as templates, and be placed like normal buildings
- Templates can be synced across a network

Character Customisation
- Over 50 player skins
- Support for custom player skins
- 10 hats for your character to wear, also wearable body armour.
- Weapons are customisable too! Attach weapon mods to weapons to change their appearance and behaviour. Make shotguns explosive, make your pistol armour piercing or your SMG scoped!

Modding Support
- Steam Workshop integration
- Lua Scripting for easy moddability with a C++ scratch-coded base game engine for performance
Game Modes

Turf: Start in a procedurally generated city, and do what you want. Build, do missions, do crime, do whatever!
Build: Start on a blank map and build whatever you want with unlimited blocks.
Turf Zero: Start on a blank map and build a city from scratch. Scavenge resources from bandit bases.
Strategy: Start in a procedurally generated city with 16 warring factions. Use diplomacy and warfare to gain control over the entire city!

Again, this isn't an Early Access game, so all of this is actually in there rather than being promises to be fulfilled at a later date.  It seems to be interesting enough to try out, for me at least.  I'll probably dive into the multiplayer and will mention which server I dived into in a later edit.

Played it for a bit, pretty fun. Scratches a few itches there. The prefabs are all pretty well done, too.

The only major gripe I have at the moment is the fact that cars all drive on the left side of the road, and thus all cars have the driver's side door on the right. Being American, it's the other way around for me.

I remember seeing this on /r/linux_gaming not too long ago - allegedly developed entirely on Linux from day 0, this makes me really happy because hot damn I haven't seen a game run on Linux from out of the box this smooth in forever (and my rig isn't exactly top of the line by any current standards). And with how much there seems to be to do (and it actually being there instead of being promised) and for how cheap, this ticks so many right boxes for me.

If people provide their steam usernames, I may be able to set up a whitelisted server.  Can't give any guarantees I'll know what I'm doing or how the quality of it will turn out, but might as well try.

That weird to read for me. My only PC is on Linux and i play a lot of games and almost all of them run perfectly well on my 3 years old computer.

I mean, for what it's worth, most of my library works fairly well (albeit sometimes I have some issues with at least a few games), but Voxel Turf certainly takes the cake.
I just always kind of go into things with a mindset htat something IS going to break, because even though there's plenty of Linux ports now compared to some time ago (and contrary to the ever-popular myth that Linux has no games), not all of them are of stellar quality.

Seems pretty interesting, not much risk for $8 though. :P

I should note that there's a chance we need to use the steamID rather than steam username for the whitelist.

Screw it, let's save messing with some form of whitelist for later.  Server is up with the name of 'Bay 12 Forums Server'.  And if people want a discord to use for voice chat: here you go.  I won't initially be in the voice chat, but if someone wishes to, just post in the discord's general.  I should be able to hear you.

Does anyone know if items stored in containers placed in your base are safe? Like, they won't suddenly/randomly disappear?

Bases natural ownership added to everything built inside it, so it should be safe.

Also, nuked the server and started over with the basic 'Turf' rather than 'Strategy', bot due to the update and due to last I checked, one of the AI had literally taken over everything.

Neat. I wasn't expecting a thread or people to pick it up, given the programmer art and indie-to-the-max state
I got all the achivements and wrote a little review about it.

For the price, it's pretty neat. I hope to see more games exploring this sort of concept.
The weak point of the game is definitely the AI, and owning a neighborhood or a whole town while have no power at all over it (as you can't recruit AI members) is pretty awkward, but I think the dev will probably have a look into that.

I haven't been able to unlock any achievements yet, despite definitely fulfilling the conditions. Do they not work in single-player?

They do, I only played multiplayer for maybe two minutes!
The only achievement that wasn't triggering for me was the "40 desirability residence" one, but I warned the dev and he changed the achievement description while he works on a fix.

If the issue still stands, do make a thread on the Voxel Turf Bug Reports Section on Steam. The dev has been very active, both replying to reports, fixing things without replying to the threads, commenting on screenshots or even showing on multiplayer (the first three happened to me - it seems I was the first one to find all the Easter Eggs).

It baffles me a bit that by leaving the game with programmer art, cheese physics and simple AI, the dev may have killed off 50% of potential buyers or good reviews..(don't ask me how I got this number  ::))
Definitely not a problem to me. But I wish more games with such concepts were made and released like this one was, without going into through the Permanent Early Access Program.

Believe me, some people are just stupidly picky. I've already seen one post from someone who refused to buy because traffic is left-sided.

I don't even think the graphics are too bad, actually.

So me and a few friends got this.  It was pretty fun.  Still a little rough around the edges, but definitely worth the 7 dollars it is right now.

My biggest complaint is the difficulty curve, as it's kind of wonky and it's really easy to die or get into untenable positions early on.  The game also has a surprising amount of depth, and I look forward to where it goes.
