Meaningful Mandates (coordinated with civilisation)
« on: September 20, 2017, 07:17:20 am »

Instead of random mandates to direct the production of a fortress randomly, mandates should be used to support the chosen civilisation, e.g. in its war effort. They can also be useful to support armies in the vicinity. Simply whenever something is needed (like a new expedition or a road project in peace times) every fortress is given a quota to fulfill.

The barons, as vassals of the king, are then responsible to meet this quota. Therefore denying a mandate, not fulfilling it or sudden accidents of rulers then need to have consequences. Like visits from the royal guard or neaby armies ;) Maybe some aspects from Dwarven politics could also be an option for consequences?

Main point is: That way we could take a more active role in the civilisation and its history if we choose so (have a baron)!

Two words: Economy update. Coming in maybe ~10 years.

Law & politics updates will also include a lot of details on the relationship between nobles, ordinary dwarves and the needs of a nation. That's only 5-6 years away. Yay.

Eventually, the idea is that mandates will lean towards stuff your fortress actually needs (and will therefore be helpful at times), rather than just being requests for random junk.

Though ideally there should still be an element of ...subjectivity to the mandates based on the noble's personality. More 'selfish' ones should be more likely to put out 'silly' mandates (ideally ones that correspond with their own preferences/thoughts) while more dutiful/objective ones would be more willing to go with mandates that do fit the fortress'/civlization's needs.

Would probably be a good indicator that you need to fire a certain noble if they abuse the system with arbitrary mandates, but that's years away as others have said, since it relies on a slew of other systems being in place up and running, which themselves aren't coming anytime soon either.

Agreed. Let us not forget that in real life, power often goes hand in hand with pettiness, pointlessness, and perversity; having constant demands for slate unicorn figurines feels more realistic to me than an unbroken chain of sensible, pragmatic leadership.

Yes, but right now the mandates are lacking pragmatism at all. Not every noble was maniac and there are fairy tales of good rulers. In fact things would get more interesting if your civ has some kind of louis quatorze which would bring the insanity to every fort. So personality-based should definitely stay, cause it gives us the whole range of possibilities for mandates.

I also like the idea of using mandates as some sort of tutorial or reminder for things the fortress really needs.
